The sun is getting stronger and the magnetic field is drifting weaker. And yes, our magnetic field has no effect on solar activity. However it does control the magnitude of the effects on our ionosphere.

Thank you Dr Skov! My grandmother was a physicist at APL in the 60s, researching tropospheric refraction/delay of signals from satellites (GPS precursor research). Around 1970 she showed me a teletype print-out of solar weather, trying to explain how it affected the troposphere and signal propagation. She would be delighted by what we've learned, horrified that we've allowed vital scientific infrastructure to age without replacement.

It's time to question what could be causing the Sun to strengthen? Physics has taught us that a force or mass must be acting upon an object to cause it to change. So what new mass is acting up on the Sun?

Its in part, the magnetic field of the Earth that is weakening, the excursion of the magnetic poles(possible reversal) which allows greater effects by smaller flares, and CMEs from the sun. Been watching the filament. I however agree density of filament was high, and also is in part the effects from this increase. (Both in short.)

Wonderful. I love your space weather forecast because you know how to explain the sun events to ordinary people. Also you add your effort and explaining the speeds, fields, latitudes, directions, times, and more and more data what I have never imagined. Then the formation, direction of the solar storm. I love the graphs charts with the data shows only a line but you explain in It in thousands words and that makes me understand the chart. Love it. It is all very important. @@TamithaSkov i agree, definately not as much equipment as one would like, and it doesnt help when the government defunds projects like chandra... but still... there was sufficient information provided by gos and sterio a and b, one must begin to question whether or not all of the variables are being factored in to the predictive softwear, and if they are being properly weighted, or even up to date... one thing is curtain, this should not have caught us off guard like it did

So when we see NOAA predictions, we should be aware the activity predicted to hit in 3 days may arrive in 2 days, and a predicted glancing blow may be much stronger or less strong than predicted. Will the new GOES 18 (GOES-U new GOES-E) give more solar data to improve forecasting? I guess it will take til November to be commissioned. 😊thanks!

I think you mentioned it at 40:00 (Virgil? Part of GOES-18? Is that the name of the coronograph?)
@TamithaSkov
@TamithaSkov 3 ай бұрын
Vigil is an ESA mission that will "park" a coronagraph (and other instruments) at the L5 Lagrangian point. This will give us about 4 days advance warning of big active regions that could spell trouble for us. It will also give us a "side" view of Earth-directed solar storms so that we can do a better job at forecasting them. Sadly, launch for this spacecraft has been pushed out to 2030.

I turned my external speaker up high, and slowed the video's playback speed to 75%, but it's still difficult to understand what our commentator is saying when her voice 'trails off' and what sounds like mumbling or some words are being 'muttered' when she talks. This is my first time here, listening to this podcast. I do appreciate her candor, excitement and personality she is bringing to the podcast. I think keywords should be emphasized and syllables more clearly annunciated. Thank you!

I watched this briefing last night and I thoroughly enjoyed it. As for cycle 19, it started from April of 1954 to November of 1968. So I was a shortwave listener during the tale end of the cycle. I became a CB enthusiast in cycle 20 and a ham in cycle 21. Cycles 23 and 24 were disappointing but this cycle looks to be an exciting one. It might not rival or beat cycle 19 but it's already an improvement over the past two solar cycles. Thanks for also explaining stealth CMEs. What you taught shows that solar flairs aren't the sole source of CMEs. I'm grateful for your explanation which I'll pass on to others when they ask what happened.

The Sun is loaded with snake filaments -- expressing filament eruptions -- What is of concern is the speed radioactive winds travel towards Earth's surface; how many are occurring? How do these radioactive winds affect the Van Allen Belts and their consequence to plate tectonic plasticity? And, Earth keeping traditional know orbit in its gravitational field? Could we loose tilt???
