Hi Addam, another gorgeous Tamiya buggy done and dusted! Oh yes, this is on my mile long want list, too! I agree, i think it will run better over the bumps than it might appear when testing it on the bench. As for the rear binding I see you have found the culprit by reading the comments. My Terra Scorcher was the same and a few test runs freed it all off nicely! Great build, dude! Take care and thanks for the cards, came this morning! 🤗👌👍

Thanks Mark! It a great looking buggy, I am really happy to have it in the collection! Yes, I think the front suspension will work ok now, it was dismal before the polish and rebuild though! It should work a lot better out running around like you said! I am relieved I did not goof up and thing and it just need to be broken in. I had to double check, I really would have kicked myself if I has run it and ruined something because I goofed up and didn't! The cards got to you super quick, my pleasure!! Thanks Al! It was a fun build it is not too bad to do. I was just a bit on the space cadet side of things starting out so I missed a couple bits! I had a few issues like the front shock which I have not run into with any of the other single front shock kits before. The rear gear box binding was just the two side bevel gear rubbing together in the middle just enough to make it feel weird. It is wearing in and will be fully worn in after the first battery running so I stuck it all back together and will let it ride! I hope to get it out soon but the track need to dry up some, not trying to get it super muddy on the first run! Take care my friend!

Hi guys!! (I know you are not a "guy" Ingrid, it is just a saying! LOL!) The Squish Van showed up yesterday so it is up next on the bench. I do have to tear down the Boomerang first to find out what is going on in the rear end. It is not gear type binding but it really feels like rubber on plastic binding which makes no sense at all! I am pretty sure it is going to be one of those things where you tear it down, don't see anything wrong and put it all back together and then it works fine. LOL! Once that is done then on to building the SV, I will probably only get the chassis done as the body is going to take a few days to get done. I am not going box art at all on it! Looks like a beauty! I think that's how those shocks work up front on that suspension set up definitely needed spacers I think that's why the old hotshot had such a strong spring on the shock.. also 10wt to 15wt oil will make it more active all the way around.
@AddamsPlayground11 ай бұрын
Yeah I have a couple with the mono shock up front and none have felt this sticky and weird like this one did. It is much better with the polished shock shaft and the added spacer. I was out of the 10 weight oil so the 20 went in there. It is much better and an oil change is easy to do down the road. I have to get restocked on a few different shop supplies like this. I have been avoiding the hobby shop as I know there is a ton on sale in there and you know my will power in there!!! LOL!

It is a really good looking one and for a $175 it is a good price for a 4wd buggy kit too! I did tear the gearbox apart and found the side bevel gears were just touching together in the middle and caused the tiny bit of binding feeling. It will wear in completely in no time so I stuck it all back together and will let it wear in by itself. I just had to make sure I had not missed something or screwed up something. Thankfully it is all good!!
@poorboysrc10 ай бұрын
I think I've had that same issue with my Boomerang chassis' series of RC's. I just assumed it was the gears fitting tightly, and needing some break-in. So I just dropped a pack in there, and ran it. Knock on wood, no issues! Hopefully it's nothing major, dude. Cheers and we'll see you on the next one!
@AddamsPlayground10 ай бұрын
That is what it was. It felt almost like plastic to rubber friction, hence the squeaking. I tore it all down and found the two side bevel gears were rubbing on each other in the middle where they meet and since they are both flat surfaces they had that sticky squeaky feel. I saw they were wearing in already so I slapped it all back together and will just let it wear in naturally!! A battery or two I am sure it will be perfect.

Thanks Jeremy! On my Hotshot it is a totally different shock and a much heavier spring. I found it odd as the Nova Fox has the same set and the HS2 is basically the same and neither of them struggled like this one did. Polishing the shock shaft and rebuilding it with thinner oil and putting the spring spacer one seemed to do the trick. It is still a little wonky on the bench but think it will be alright out running. I think the wet weather is going to be a fight all winter long. We will see! Have a great rest of your weekend!

I really don't know how you find time to fit it all in matey! Love the Boomerang, I can remember lusting after it in my mum's catalogue as a wee ten year old.... It was way too expensive back then! That whole front suspension design looks like it's showing its age, we have to remember these set ups were still fairly experimental at what was in reality still fairly early on in the development of the rc buggies. I'm guessing that's why we dont see anything similar on modern buggies. It does look really cool though, and I bet these little design flaws don't detract from the driving experience in the slightest! That rear end definitely sounded as though something was rubbing in the diff, I've had similar sounds before on other new builds that disappear after a run or two as things bed in. Cheers for sharing mate! 👍 👍 👍

I am usually editing and uploading things the night before the videos go live so I am always cutting it close but end up getting it done! I do love the looks of the Boomerang , more now than back then but it has always been a really cool looking one. The sleek and aggressive design and the wing that flows perfectly with the body it great! I have a lot of buggies with the single front shock, I have never had one fight me like this. I and not sure what the issue was but with polishing of the shock shaft, the shock oil change and the big spring spacer it is finally acting right. Still not the best on the bench but I am sure it will work fine out driving. I expect a small amount of oddness and old quirky design in them but that shock was wonky. There could be something wrong with the molding of the body causing it, I am not sure but I think it is as good as it is going to get! I did tear into the rear end yesterday and found the two side bevel gears in the diff are just touching in the middle and have just enough friction to cause that little sticky, binding feeling. It is wearing in already so I stuck it back together and I am just going to let it wear in naturally. I had to find out if it was something silly or if I goofed up. Thankfully it was not a goof on my part just something needing to wear in. Take care James and have a great Sunday!!!

Hi Zachary, Yes lots of building should be getting done soon. With almost all of the outside work done for the year (besides the track makeover) and I am done decorating for Christmas I should have more time to devote to hiding away in the basement getting stuff built and restored! I did think about getting two of these and doing the Winger out of one of them but decided against it, why I don't remember! I am happy with the way it turned out. The front shock was a bit finicky but seems to be working better. I have to find out what that odd binding feeling is though before I can run it. It is not hindering anything but also does not feel normal at all and if I don't take it apart and find out if it is wrong or right it will drive me bananas! LOL! Take care and I hope you have very happy holiday season!!!

My first hobby grade car. I was lucky to have one back in the day. I do recall using a spacer in the front spring. From memory that made it turn worse. I think a sloppy front digs in a bit better. But that was a long time ago and I am a moron. I do remember doing the super shot front upgrade. I can’t remember if that deleted the swaybar or not. But I agree the swaybar is looking a little useless. The binding looks like diff gears or dog bones by the way you demonstrated the fault. Again I am a moron. It still looks awesome all these years later. The older I get the better it looks and the faster I was haha

Turned out great brother. I surprisingly found out that mono shock setup actually works well. One thing I like about the Hotshot setup...is that the bar holders on ine front are actually fiberglass. This doesn't allow as much flex and makes for a more efficient sway bar imo. Can't wait to see it on the track.
@AddamsPlayground11 ай бұрын
Thanks! It is a great looking buggy! I hate to replace the front sway bar holders as the blue looks great but they are merely for decoration as the plastic is almost like rubber as thin as it is. I may leave them alone as I don't plan on running it all the time but I may break down and get some aluminum ones for it just so I know it is properly working! First I need to identify the slight binding issue in the rear. I am going to tear it apart today and find out what is going on. It does not feel like gears at all. It does not have the notchy, crunchy feel of bad gear mesh at all. It is almost like a plastic on plastic or more accurately a rubber on plastic overtight feel which makes no sense at all! I am pretty sure it is going to be one of those things where you tear it down, don't see anything wrong and put it all back together and then it works fine. LOL! Take care a have a great weekend!

The front shock on these never works well statically on the bench. But when in motion it isn't too bad! Definitely something wrong with the rear gearbox. I know some of my Tamiya re-releases can have minor issues with the nylon gears - almost as if there was a problem with the moulds. If everything else looks ok, might be worth taking a look at the teeth on the gears just to make sure they are no irregularities. 👍

Thank David, the shock works much better now than in the start! It was just terrible the first time around! Seems to be good enough and I am sure it will be better in motion. The rear end issue is puzzling and I am going to tear it apart today and find out what is going on. It does not feel like gears at all. It does not have the notchy, crunchy feel of bad gear mesh at all. It is almost like a plastic on plastic or more accurately a rubber on plastic overtight feel which makes no sense at all! It came out great! if you compress the rear suspension a bit so they are not at full travel do you still get the noise? it might be the rear dogbones binding.
@AddamsPlayground10 ай бұрын
Thanks! It is a great looking buggy! I did end up tearing it apart to make sure I did not space out and do something wrong. Thankfully I did not, it was the two side bevel gears rubbing together in the middle just enough and flat enough to make it feel sticking and binding. It was already wearing in fine so I stuck it back together and after a battery or two it will be perfect. I hoped it was something simple like that but I had to check! I really would have kicked myself if I has run it and ruined something because I goofed up and didn't double check!

Probably been mentioned already but maybe grab the hotshot sway bar holders they’re at least frp I think they are, something like that certainly much stiffer than the blue noodles you have there. Look forward to the run
@AddamsPlayground11 ай бұрын
Yeah, I have also looked at some aluminum ones on eBay as well! I am torn as I like the look of the cool blue one but they are just ornamental as they twist more than the sway bar does! LOL! I may go the HS route as use those as they won't stand out and also do their intended function properly! I am getting ready to go down and tear into the rear end and try to figure out the odd binding feeling in there rear end and maybe have time to get it out for a run this afternoon. I tore it apart this morning and everything is correct. The two side bevel gear are tight together and will just wear in over time. I was pretty nice to know I had not screwed up anything and it was just a little snug. I was going to sand them a tiny bit but decided to let them break in naturally. I will get it out for a drive soon!

I’ve just literally built my boomerang and everything you’ve said mine has got the same problems I took my rear gearbox apart again and applied a bit more heavier grease and put a whole fully charged battery through it and it’s completely free now🤷♂️ I’m thinking it’s just an old design that isn’t as precise as what we expect in today’s rc buggies!

Yeah, I am sure it will be better in motion than just sitting on the bench. I wish I had gotten video of the shock before I fixed it, it really was awful! I have a bunch of the single front shock cars and none have given me the troubles this one did going together. I got it working good enough and I hope to get it out on the track tomorrow possibly to get the run recorded.

Hey Addam!! I love you Boomerang! Man that thing looks so good 😎 If I was in your shoes, I would try taking one wheel off each side at a time and rotate the assembly. I have had the plastic hex hub grind into the hub carrier before on a TT-01 build and ended up changing hexes. Interested to see what the issue was if you get it figured out. Happy Holidays brotha!!
@AddamsPlayground11 ай бұрын
It is a great looking one and it seems like it will be a fun one out running around. I did tear into it and found the two side bevel gear were just rubbing on each other and causing the little bit of binding feeling. It was so minimal I put it all back together and will let it wear in naturally. It should be just fine after the first run! I did check it all from the outside inwards before jumping straight into the gearbox but thankfully it take very little to pop it back out and pull it apart. It was just a relief I didn't mess anything up! LOL! Happy Holidays to you as well my friend!

The front suspension on mine is the same as yours where it doesn’t really have any rebound however the suspension worked great when I took it for a run in the park. Not sure how it would go over jumps but I tend to run mine in parkland rather than on tracks.
@AddamsPlayground10 ай бұрын
It was really awful before I polished the shock shaft and rebuilt it, I have quite a few single front shock buggies and none of them felt this weird. It seems good now and I am sure it will do better driving around than on the bench.
@peteredwards711410 ай бұрын
I think it’s the spring. It seems to be very thin where as other buggies I have with the mono shock have a thicker spring which would give it more tension. I think Tamiya just got lazy on this one. It would be interesting to see if they did the same thing to the Super Sabre as it’s basically the same car.
@michaeldorich448511 ай бұрын
The car looks great. You did an excellent job and the tips you suggested will help other builders. I think that big wing looks good with this body. I have always wondered why they use mono shock on some of their cars. Was is it way to save money by having to include only three shocks instead of four or is it suppose to functional? Decades ago I recall guys showing up at races with the Boomerang and Hot Shot. They looked cool. I think they had mechanical speed controls as did most cars. But, there were a few plastic pieces on the track after a race. Keep up the good work.
@AddamsPlayground11 ай бұрын
Thanks Michael! It is a great looking car and the wing is almost an extension of the body. It and the mono-shock front end give it a sleek and aggressive look that I love! The single shock is just novelty and design esthetics. The dual front shock was always superior in handling and consistent feel. The single front shock just looks cool but it is rather good in most cases, at least for normal running and fun track use. In the ThunderShot series of buggies some have the single and some have the dual front shocks and I can't really tell much if any difference in the driving of them. Around this time when this came out the RC scene was exploding with options so standing out with a cool deign and unique front shock setup that worked was a big selling point. For us collectors it still is! LOL! Take care and have a great weekend!

The boomerang was my wifes first build. I stood buy in case she needed help but she pretty much everything herself. With the exception of "wire management" i did that. We put a brushless system in it so it was really a pain in the @$$😄. Probably shouldn't have been her first kit as its not the easiest kit in the world kind of a funky design but that was the kit she bought.
@AddamsPlayground11 ай бұрын
That is awesome! Yeah the wiring is a bit a of a pain in there trying to keep everything away from the driveshaft plus you are adding more wire and probably a chunky ESC in there too! Might not be the most beginner friendly one but now she knows she can pretty much build any of them, no problem! I really love the look of it and and I did find the rear end binding feeling issue was not a big deal at all so I am happy wit the build as well!

Good looking buggy. Wondering about getting this or a Hot Shot II. I guess the chassis is pretty much the same?
@AddamsPlayground11 ай бұрын
Thanks, it is a really sweet looking one! Th chassis are a bit different from each other but are more or less the same thing over all. Some slight design changes but very similar. I am waiting for the HS2 as well to show up. I think the HS2 will have it beat by the front suspension alone as the single front shock on it works a good bit better and has the quick adjust. It really comes down to the looks and the front suspension. I love the look of the single front shock as it make it look sleek and fast but the Hotshot shocks are nicer feeling and I do like the quick adjust feature on them.

Did you say you hate the new small on-off power switches on the HobbyW ESCs? Was it you that 3D printed a holder for the smaller switch that still bolts into the Tamiya large on-off switch location which comes with the standard Tamiya ESC?
@AddamsPlayground10 ай бұрын
For a lot of the kits it can be a real pain to find somewhere to mount the thing properly. If it had a long wire on it or had the old school end it may help. It was not me that had an adapter but I am goin to have to go look for it now! I love the 1060 ESC, it is perfect for these kits but getting that on/off switch in a good spot can be a chore!

@AddamsPlayground11 ай бұрын
Thanks Mark! I wish it was the same here but the SuperShot is about $100 more than the Boomerang here! I don't have the SS but I know a lot of folks have said it handles better with the twin front shocks over the mono-shock this and the HS2 have on them. So the Supershot may be a better bang for the buck since they are the same price. Plus this one just came out so it 'should' be around for a while.

Great build I hope it does not have those awful fixed piston heads Did you get your RC10CC yet ?
@AddamsPlayground11 ай бұрын
It is a great looking buggy! It does not have the generic flat top shock pistons. It has you build them with very small 4-hole pistons and with the thicker yellow oil I was worried but after polishing the shaft and rebuilding it seems better. I added the spring spacer and it seems like it should run well. I have not gotten the RC10CC yet. Amain claims they have another shipment coming and they are enough for all that ordered them so I am hoping it shows up soon enough. It does suck as by the time I get mine there will but 1100 other videos of it on here but nothing I can do but make mine and hope you guys enjoy it! LOL!

Did you ever find out what the binding was from
@AddamsPlayground10 ай бұрын
Yes, I tore the rear end apart and found the two side bevel gear were just touching in the center and were perfectly flat against each other and causing the sticking/binding feeling! They were already wearing in nicely so I put it back together and will let them wear in naturally. It was not a lot of bind feeling, just enough to really question if is missed something! All good and after a battery through it then it should be perfect.

@AddamsPlayground11 ай бұрын
No, it feel/sounds like a plastic to rubber friction issue but it is too hard to tell, it is not in the gear mesh as it doesn't feel clunky or crunchy at all. It it like two smooth thing are too tight together and causing the binding feeling but I can't think of anything in there that would be doing it. I am going to have to pull it part today and find out unfortunately. I have to know if it was something I did or it is just the way it is for some odd reason.
