That was a very good explanation of barrel springs. Similar is used on sports cars (real ones), for a softer around town driving, without a big sacrifice in handling. I am sold!

Thank's for this technical vid - often stuff regarding suspension and springs is mixed up: To complete your information: The *stiffness* of the (linear) spring is described by the slope - preloading the spring does not increase the stiffnes, it does what you have visualized with the green lines! But the barrel spring has different stiffnes over travel - excactly as you have described it!

+MrStonesoul81 Freut mich zu hören! Um das Gehoppel zu verringern helfen vor allem auch noch weichere Reifen, weichere Öl-Dämpfer und viel Gewicht im Wagen (Blei)

Hi Matteo. I always enjoy your videos. I just completed my FJ Cruiser. I used your videos to help with improving the front and rear suspensions, front steering, etc. A question: I noticed in all of your videos for the FJ it rides very smooth. No jostling or stiffness. How did you get the springs to be so smooth and compliant? I assume you set the pre-load on the shocks to the minimum? Thanks for the help.
@Matteomeier8 жыл бұрын
+Matt DeRoller Thanks for your nice feed back, glad my videos were helpful! Yes, I have no preload on the springs. And enlarged the holes in the pistons, think you saw it in my aluminum damper vid. But one more secret I can tell you: The weight of the car. To get a realistic articulation of the suspension the car should have a good weight (same as a real one). In stock setup the car is much too light. So, I added many lead weights inside of the body. The result is a much more realistic movement of the suspension.

@TomsRCScalers8 жыл бұрын

Interesting video Professor Mattteo, :) The advantage in design is very good but one question. do you have to buy 2 sets of springs or did you put different strength springs on the front to the rear.
@Matteomeier8 жыл бұрын
+Malcolm Lambart Ohh, Professor... what a honor! :-) No, I use the soft ones in the rear and the medium in the front. I think not two sets are necessary.

Hi Matteo! I'm a fan of your RC videos. You make great shots & I admire them very much! I have a question not related to the barrel springs but on the body for CC-01. I currently use the Pajero Hard Top Body Shell w/c has a wheelbase of 245mm. Now I'm working on a Polycarbonate FJ Cruiser body but its wheelbase is quite longer than the Pajero. What recommendation/advise can you give to compensate for this longer wheelbase so I could fit it in perfectly on the CC-01 chassis? Thanks in advance for your reply.
@Matteomeier5 жыл бұрын
On the chassis underside are two positions to fix the rear links. One hole for shorter wheelbase and one for longer wheelbase. I think you should use the holes for long wheelbase, maybee you need a longer drive shaft also.

I bought these Barrel Springs.... They are good with light bumps, but are still too stiff for the harder use. I am often on three wheels, because they don't compress enough. 😕 I need a much lighter springs for my Landfreeder, as I think it is too light. Probably a different brand, but almost nobody lists the spring diameters or the length in their listings. Do you know any other springs that might fit the stock Tamiya shocks?? Thank you my friend ~ Carmine
@Matteomeier7 жыл бұрын
I do not think the springs are too soft. After the modifications of the pistons, explained in my previous comment they work much better. And because the low weight of the Landfreeder, I've added some lead weights under the body to get a more realistic handling of the car.

Thanks for sharing your vivid explanation. I can understand the advantages, theoretically it would also be an advantage in buggies (soft damping while running, hard damping while landing after a jump - avoiding a 'belly landing'). I just wonder why nearly all Tamiyas come with a normal spring and this barrel spring is extremely rare - if the advantage is great then it would be the standard for all RC Car units, but it isn't. So the advantage must be very small? But thanks for sharing. It is new to me and highly interesting. What are your practically, not theoretically, opinion/experience? Do you notice any advantage when running with barrel springs?
@Matteomeier8 жыл бұрын
+Nordic RC Visions Of course the "real advantage" is small. But not every best product is automatically in the kits. And I think a barrel spring is more expensive in the production. Otherwise it would be not possible to tune it up - and this is a very nice part of our hobby. I am sure the response of these springs is better, and as I told in the video I like it to have the choice of the different hardnesses. At the end a big improvement on a chassis is a combination of many small advantages. kzbin.info/aero/PLwlsg2vvYW6tC2D8oE9JFYMqegOG1Qrqs
@NordicRC8 жыл бұрын
+Matteo's RC Movies thanks for your answer. Of course Tamiya also sells different sets of springs of hardness in 'normal springs'. But I think your last comment was very good. It's the combination of a lot of different upgrades that makes the difference from the stock version. I also like your dampers in the video. The stock-CVA I got in my Landfreeder kit are VERY hard, even with soft Oil. Thanks for all your videos. I enjoy both the your movie-style-videos and your garage-videos. Keep up the good work.
@Matteomeier8 жыл бұрын
Nordic RC Visions To make the stock dampers softer, I enlarged a bit the two flat areas on the Pistons. And I added some lead weights in the chassis. This gives a more realistic moving suspension.
