This is my Tamiya CC-02 Unimog 406 kit which I received as a birthday present from my friend and fellow Tamiya enthusiast Peter.
This isn't a full on build video because I wanted to concentrate on the build and enjoy myself without the added worry of camera angles, lighting etc.
I took photos at various stages of the build and I've made a slideshow video instead.
The build was straight forward using Tamiya's excellent instructions, and their design is very interesting compared to other manufacturer's crawler/trail chassis.
The kit came with a standard 27t Mabuchi silver can brushed motor, and the new updated Tamiya TBLE-04S ESC.
Peter kindly bought a full metal bearing set for it too.
I've added an FTX servo I already had, and will see how it performs.
The paint is Core RC Metallic Red, Fastrax Jet Black, and Tamiya PS55 Flat Clear.
Unfortunately I didn't do enough red coats, so it's patchy.
I'm treating that as a learning curve.
If you want to skip the build, the run starts at @3:43

Brother, that was the fastest CC-02 build video I seen, start to finish @ 3m 40s. Looks fantastic mate!!!! The "Patchy Red" as you say looks weathered to me, love it!!! Runs nice and smooth too. I was digging the 70's funk music also, Love It!!!! ATB my friend, to you & yours!!!!

Sorry I missed this video earlier, Derek, glad I caught it now! I think you did a great job on the body painting, you should have said you did it on purpose because I love the patina! I really like the look of this chassis, hope I can get one soon, it's just a matter of time! Need to add to my crawler collection as I've only got a couple. Looked really smooth in the woods, although it seemed like you were going faster than usual, even with the LOW GEARING!!! All the best, my good friend! 😁👍

I'm feeling left out.... Peter hasn't sent me anything!! 😜😂 The CC-02 Unimog has been high on my list. You did a great job, of course. And for where you run it, I don't see anything beyond bog stock ever needed. Tamiya did a good job with that one....... EXCEPT for the 4-Link Front with Chassis Mounted Servo! 😳 A setup to maximum Bump Steer, especially if any raise in Suspension is involved. Besides that, it looks like a fantastic Trail Rig!! Have a great Weekend Derek!! 🍻🍻🍻

Hello Carmine. Thank you very much. Yes I'm surprised Tamiya didn't do the steering set up it differently considering they've had many other manufactures to learn from over the years as far as crawlers are concerned. But it seems to be a nice robust chassis and I think the only change I'll make is replacing the silver can with a 5 Slot brushed motor. Enjoy your weekend too my friend 🙂👍👍
@CarminesRCTipsandTricks
@CarminesRCTipsandTricks 2 жыл бұрын
Derek.... I believe that a good 5 Slot would be the only thing you might need. Is it Competition ready? Of COURSE not. However, Tamiya made a nice, very Scale and quite robust Kit! I would be happy to have one myself. After spending $$$$$$$ and about 2 Years of frustrating redesign.... My CC01 is only marginally better than stock!! 😖 I think the CC02 quite a leap!

Hello, Derek - I didn't feel short-changed by the way you covered the build at all, and I think the chassis design's very interesting. I love the quirky, unique manner in which Tamiya's designers work. This is a lovely body shape, too. Like you, I'd have certainly gone for the low gearing option during the build, and the patchiness of the red paint adds character and realism! What a great bloke Peter is :)
@hollyhillrc
@hollyhillrc 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Del. Despite the low gearing I find the silver can too fast for my taste. I'm going to try a Surpass 5-slot 16 turn 1850kv brushed motor. I have one in my Element Trailrunner Fire which is paired with an Axial AE-5L ESC and the throttle control is much more smooth and controllable. I don't know how it will perform with the Tamiya TBLE-04 ESC, so I may have to get a similar ESC if it doesn't work out.
@Del350K4
@Del350K4 2 жыл бұрын
@@hollyhillrc It's not a crawler motor at all, the Mabuchi-style 27T silver can, is it? And it's funny how certain brushed ESCs just don't get on with some motors when it comes to delicate throttle control.

Great gift...👍🏻. A fine choice of Tamiya, it makes a for a cool alternative trail runner. A good tip to avoid patches in paintwork on these lexan shells is to hold them up to the sun or other light source - you'll notice immediately where any extra paint is needed. They tend to need more than you'd imagine. Having said that yours looks great anyhow...👍🏻👍🏻.

Thank you. I was trying to get a deep burgundy colour with the combination of both colours but it didn't go to plan. It's my second attempt at this and the first one with my Kyosho Outlaw Rampage failed too. They both look nice now they're finished, just not the colour I was aiming for. I'm currently spraying another body metallic graphite, backed with silver, and then black, and have heeded your advice. 😀👍

Good morning Pete. Thank you very much. OF COURSE I WENT FOR LOW SPEED GEARING !!! 😅😅😅 Yes it's very different from a CC-01 chassis and is more like a conventional 4 link set up crawler chassis, but with a few Tamiya quirks in the mix. I'm looking forward to this afternoon and I'm just doing last minute checks, like "where's my bloody tripod !"😄. I'll go to the usual car park and if you're not there I'll drive up the other end. Yes it's a nice chassis and just needs a slower motor and a more suitable ESC (See recent uploads 😁) I'm still a novice when it comes to painting, but I'm learning by my mistakes and I hope to get better with more practice. Hi Brent. It will never be an Axial etc, but it's a nice trail truck. As far as performance goes this is the only time I've run it so far. But I didn't set my expectations too high and I really like it. I could've made it look more scale by slowing it down in the edit, but for the first video I wanted to show it in it's stock form. I may change the motor to a smoother 5 slot 16T brushed in the future. I have a Surpass one in my Element Trailrunner Fire and the speed is much more controllable. But being a Tamiya it's a good quality build, and seems very robust, and I don't feel the need for any other upgrades. I enjoyed building it because it's totally different from any other Tamiya I've built before and the whole process was very interesting. The new CC-02 Land Rover Defender is due for release in the new year so that could be an option for you. Would I recommend it ? Well if you have the money and are intrigued about Tamiya's first "proper crawler", I say "why not". You can always sell it if you decided it wasn't for you because there's always someone who will buy it. When I first started in the hobby I was too nervous to build my own RC's, and especially frightened about painting the bodies. So I only bought used ones that had been built by other people. Have a good weekend my friend and I hope some of this is useful 😀👍

Hi. Thank you for watching and your question. I understand what you mean and I did try that first, but I didn't have much success cutting away the film from one of the wheel arches. When I peeled it off it came away from the body too. Unfortunately I lost my confidence after that and decided to mask it all instead.

@hollyhillrc
@hollyhillrc 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Carmine. Your 96mm tyres may be a problem. Not concerning the body arches so much because you can obviously raise the body to achieve better clearance if you wanted. But I tried various softer tyres from 90mm to 100mm dia and the inside edge of all of them rubbed on the c-hub and steering rod ends because of the design of the axle. You will get a clearer idea of what I mean once you build yours. I guess you could try and incorporate spacers behind the wheel to help it clear the hub, but I don't think that would leave enough thread on the end of the axle to tighten the nyloc nuts on fully. I ended up using the harder kit tyres because I didn't have an alternative that worked. Not so much of a problem for me because how I run it, but nevertheless it's very frustrating that I was limited to using them. But apart from that I didn't have any other issues with the build. Maybe someone on KZbin has overcome this problem now the Unimog version has been out for a while.

Thank you Derek! I won't be re-engineering something that I'm building for the first time.... These Tyres were CHEAP. They also have 90 and 92mm available. I want the largest possible, because of our terrain. But I won't compromise Steering to get it. You've been very helpful, thanks!!
