Tamiya Dual Ridge TT02B Build

I got the #58596 Tamiya Dual Ridge buggy on the TT02B chassis built last weekend and got the body painted this week. It is not a design everyone is going to love but I kind of like it and it was a fun and relaxing build to do. I bought this last October direct from Japan off eBay for only $122 so not a bad deal at all for a kit sent from Japan, NIB, for only $122! I was holding on to it when I wanted a nice and simple one to do and last weekend was a perfect time to tackle it!
You guys are all awesome and I appreciate all the great comments and questions from everyone. Really enjoying talking to you all in the comments section.

Yeah the dug pretty deep into the back of the sci-fi closet to come up with this one! When I first saw it I was not sure at all but after seeing it a few times it grew on me. It is not for everyone though! I tend to like the quirky ones Tamiya comes up with!

Thanks! I like the pop the white CVAs and the white wheels give it. They do get grimy and streaked up pretty quickly so I will keep running the Plasma Edge 2 and save them on this one!

Yeah, when I first saw it I was not impressed but I looked a bit closer at it a couple times and it began to grow on me too. I am often drawn to the odd ones and this one definitely falls into that category.

Yes, they dig deep into the sci-fi idea bucket for this one! I kind of like the odd ones so I like it but I can totally understand when folks don't! Yes, the gear are all plastic in there. It is the same chassis and diffs as the TT02 so stock it is all plastic. They hold up really well to a lot of punishment.

Thanks Mark! It is a an odd one but it is sci-fi and alien enough to be cool! I decided not to run it as the white shocks and wheels get grungy and not so pretty really quick. I figured since I have the Plasma Edge 2 I have already beat up a little, I will keep running that and leave this one pretty. At this pint I have so many it is becoming silly to make them all run-ready although I probably will most of them! The body looks great and silver was is an excellent choice of color. It definitely has alien or futuristic look. I think the shape and angle of the wing really completes the look very well. Tamiya got this one right. I know you'e not going to run it. But, it would look great flying through the air coming off a jump. Great job.

Hi Addam, a great looking futuristic TT-02B Dual Ridge, the colour is perfectly fitting for the model. Shame about the decal tearing, but hey buddy, nobody can see it 😊😊. One thing I did notice, was with the TT-02 they use long screw pins to hold the upper & lower arms, but on this TT-02B, they use the ‘U’ shaped pin instead, which is a better design. It is a good looking but very sci-fi an quirky looking body! I was a bit disappointed in tearing the sticker, I should have left it alone but it was going to bug me! LOL! It doesn't look bad but I know it is there so it is the first thing I see, we are all our own worst critics! I think the u-bracket us a better option for the suspension as there is not added stress to the arms from those screw pins in them and it cant back out. It is much more like the normal hinge pins on more modern cars, you just don't have to fiddle with the e-clips! Take care John and have a great week!

That is an interesting color but I have used it before and it looks surprisingly good so I am sure yours looks great in it! When I did my Optima in it I was worried it would look odd but it turned out great.

Thanks! It is one of the more odd and quirky ones they have done in recent years. I am drawn to those a lot just because they are so different. It was a nice and relaxing build and the body was pretty easy to do being all one color. Yeah, no need to run this one and get all the white plastics grungy since the PE2 is already been scuffed and scraped up, under the body it is the exact same things so best to leave this one pristine and enjoy it for the odd looks it has. The cab forward gives it that SciFi mars maned rover look, it's ok but I agree with you and everybody else, not really a fan of this type of cab forward, with that point of a nose cone. This is a weird one, the TT02 is a nice chassis, I see the sticker I think it would be better if you just used a exacto knife and cut that section of the sticker off on both sides and just left it so you see the black window. Looks like it got shot and hit with a bullet as it is now 😁

I though about cutting out the center of it but decided to stop fiddling with it and come back to it later and see what I was going to do. Over all it is not too noticeable when just looking at it. Once you pick it up and start really looking close it stands out. It does kind of look a little like battle damage!

Oh, man, this is my favourite TT-02B body, easily! I love the futuristic vibe of this one, it's such a great design! I didn't like the white shocks, so I swapped those, and I think maybe I also got black wheels on mine now, can't remember... But it's so cool! I'm not a big fan of the cab forward, either (other than the Vanquish/VQS), but that looks weird enough to be an exception! You did a fine job with the paint and decals, I couldn't catch where you said you messed up. I do see why Tamiya reused the chassis so much: it's so versatile. I may look into a TT-02B to go with my TT-02 in the future.

It is a quirky sci-fi based body but I do like it. On the small side "vent" area the sticker tore in the center of it. I was able to get it all lined back up but there is an oval shaped tear in it you can see on it. It is fine, if you are not aware it is there you may never see it. Since I know it is there it s the first thin I see of course! It is a pretty tough and versatile chassis, Tamiya have made a long lived business model of being able to reuse chassis and parts over and over again in other kits.

I can see that! When the body is off it resembles a falcon diving through the air as it has a small pointy beak at the front. It is a unique design for sure!

The adhesive one that battle and cost me a torn sticker but it is not terribly noticeable and looks fin up on display so all good!

Cool build, a friend I knew had one of these. I fell the same, I got my Plasma edge 2 and I bash the daylights out of it. If id had another one it would be for the shelf. Or just have one to run at home and another for the summer holidays

It is a great one to rip around and just have fun with. On dirt it run really well and is just fun ad relaxing to drive. This Dual ridge one is really cool looking, very alien! It was almost too weird for me at first but once seeing it in person I really like it a lot. I do say the rear wing would get trashed quickly if you were to drive it a bunch. The stock ones take a beating and this one sit up way higher and it really going to take some abuse in roll overs. Might be why you never really see too many used ones for sale!

One question - Where the hell do the drivers legs go? 🤔 😂 I really don't like the cab forward look, but this actually looks kinda cool.... I think that abstract wing kind of balances it out in a weird kind of way! Definitely very alien/spacey that's for sure, and I'm really feeling those white CVA shocks, very nice! I am guessing the driver lay down in some manner... who knows LOL! It is a very alien and odd one from them but from time to time they do seem to reach deep down in the sci-fi bucket and come up with a strange design. The white wheels and shocks really pop and I like them but running them they get grungy and gross looking really fast. It is one of the reasons I decided not to run this one. The TT02B runs great on dirt and similar surfaces, in the tall grass is does struggle as that wide flat belly drags it down due to the lower ground clearance. They are super stable though and my PE2 with the brushless setup rips now! You should grab one at some point and have another fun runner on the fleet. Take care my friend!

Awesome work Addam! I really think it’s a great looking buggy. It kinda reminds me of the 1/16 scale Nikko turbo aero that came out in the late 80’s😀. I thought of getting one before, but I lost my itch on RC’s. Now my crazy itch is back into PC and Retro gaming and maybe in a year or so, might get back into it😂. Again, looks sharp Addam!

It is an odd one but it does have that aerodynamic space ship look to it. It is just alien enough to be cool. I understand the changes in hobbies. I have bounced around all over the place forever but RC has always been one I go back to. Now it is the main thing but I still follow a lot of other folks doing neat stuff and occasionally dabble in other things!!

I think in 2014 when they came out the style was not a big hit and it was just before the resurgence of kit building so I think it kind of fell flat. I think it is just sci-fi and alien looking the cab forward style fits it!

It is kind of hard with the big squared tub of the TT02 chassis to get a more classic looking design to them. The Plasma Edge 2 is about as close as they got to it.

I have a custom Neo Scorcher build in my backlog to do. Gonna build it similar to Genn's. Bought a carbon TT02 chassis a while back for it. Still need to get some race wheels for it.

It is a lot different but they run and handle great. Being so low and flat they are super stable. They run super well on the dirt, in the thick grass they will get a little bogged down and turn slower due to it dragging the belly around.

I think it is alien enough to look pretty cool. The only place I have seen them for sale is on eBay coming directly out of Japan. They were released about 10 year ago and I don't think they were a super hot seller so they are not super popular. I am kind of drawn towards the odd and quirky ones so it is right up my alley!

That is a cool body for the TT-02B. I was going to get one to put on another model, but I really don’t like the way the body mount comes up through the cockpit. Maybe if I could think of a way to use Velcro or something, I might do it.

Yes, that is a downfall of it. Sadly the hole is pre punched in there in the kit so at that point there was no reason to try and get away from it. I am not sure if the body set is undrilled or not. of course Tamiya USA doesn't have a picture of it on the site...

This one looks awesome Addam. Where did you find the rotating display thing you used at the end. I've been looking for something like this for years to use for cars and drones but I never could find anything.

Thanks Ryan, it is a cool and odd one for sure! I got the turntable off of Amazon a while back. It is rechargeable and has a few different settings and sizes of platters you can use on it. Here is my link to it - amzn.to/3Uri4pN

@@RDsRCReviews I bought it in October for the same reason. I stuck in the bottom of the bookcases behind me and I forget about using it all the time!!! Now it is out where I can see it to try and remember to actually use it from time to time! LOL!

No need in going out an getting the white plastics all grungy and messed up, I can beat on the Plasma Edge as it is the exact same thing. and save the $50 for an ESC and receiver for another kit!

Why did you put a servo in it but not an ESC if you don't plan on driving it I do like how it looks like an alien

I did not put an ESC in there but I did stick the servo in there. The servo is only $5 so I centered it and stuck it in to keep the front tires straight and if I decide to drive it then all I have to is plop an esc and receiver in it and it is all ready to go. I definitely has a alien vibe to it. I like the odd ball ones so it is right up my alley!

LOL! Maybe just name it Mulder! It is definitely a quirky body but I like it. I have so many sitting around there is no need and I would end up buying and 1060 and a receiver to put it in and run it once probably. The Plasma Edge 2 is already well used and scuffed up so I can just keep running it and save this one from the scuff and scrapes.

Hey hey a new Tamiya, always enjoy that, but I dislike that Dual Ridge so much 🤮🤮 I don't dislike cab forward, i have several of them on my race buggy's, but this one is just nooooo :) You said Traxxas 😉

Yeah it is definitely one of the take it or leave it body styles! It is alien/sci-fi enough that I like it but I know there are a lot out there that are not, probably why you can still find them for a cheap price still! LOL! I did mention Traxxas! LOL! I have to give them credit for decent paints, their products are generally good but I won't feature them on the channel as I am not a fan of their bully business practices. they got a tiny bit of promotion I guess LOL!

I'll stick with my Plasma Edge II...there is something odd about this one, I just never liked it...and that wing? Omg no thank you. I do like the color scheme and decals, Tamiya did a good job on that. But you know me, if I saw it for $50 I probably wouldn't pass it up 😂

LOL! I completely understand. It is very much a love it or hate it body design! It is odd and quirky enough for me to like it. If you find any for $50 let me know LOL!

I totally understand, it is definitely a love it or hate it type look! I tend to like the oddballs and I was not even sure at first but all done I like it!!
