I think everyone wanted one of these as a kid as they just looked so much fun and so different, amazing to see Tamiya do something so different from the norm back then, and who would of thought that now those kids are all grown up so many of them still love to play with there Willy's 🤣🤣. It's brilliant fun to drive, especially on an open beach with some sand ramps. Watch out for the small holes in the gearbox at the ends of the axles - water will get in if you don't seal them. I also fitted a micro servo and small universal joint inside Willy's body to move his head when steering. There's enough room in the body for this without hacking any material away. I'd recommend glueing the rear tyres as mine started slipping on jumps.

Look forward to the build! The original Willy was my second RC car ever, and my very first Tamiya, SUCH good memories and so very much fun, I ran the first one into the ground, then my Dad bought me a new kit and that was my first full build at 12 years old, and I STILL have it, working now to restore and bought the repro tires, if you can ever get a hold of an original Willy it is SUCH a unique RC experience. Cheers man, love the channel! Thank you.

Hi Glen, back in the early 80's my two mates who were brothers had the Wild Willy and Willys Wheeler, both a lot of fun but at the time I was an SRB and 4x4 Blazer/Toyota snob and didn't like the new plastic based kits which were nothing like 'scale' replications of cars. Of the two cars my mates had the wild willy was more robust because of the tyre/wheel set that came with it... Until you rolled it then the body would take a hammering, the willys Wheeler was sleeker on smaller tyrres/wheels but seemed a lot quicker being more road orientated and handled unfortunate rolls better than the wild willy...both popped wheelies instantly if you went full beans on the throttle.. which after the novelty wore off was a pain because you couldn't steer them whilst the front was up. Can't wait to see yours finished and running... Looking forward to seeing what you do with the body.. And if you go down the Blitzer beetle wheelset route which I think would lower it and make it look awesome though at the expense of a bit of robustness.

Glenn, I've installed the reproduction original tires on mine. After some searching, I found that they fit nicely on Turbo Optima rims drilled out to fit Tamiya axles. Looks great on the shelf, but too narrow and tippy for serious driving.... or whatever driving one does with a WR-02. Thanks again for the entertaining content!

A really nice Willy you have 😂 Builded mine a few month ago. This project really pushed me to my limits. The bodywork is more like a static model than like a rc car. Filling the gas can, painting the NOS bottle, filling and painting the extinguisher, painting the dashboard, painting the body different to the seat and the wheel arc, and by then I hadn't even started the driver figure. There are really a lot of traps while building the body, I highly recommend to read the manuel twice before you glue. Over all I started building a runner and finally came out with a blingbling shelf queen. Anyway, Ive done mine in silver with slightly modified decals and I am fine with it. Nice car. P.S. Yes please change the bushings in the gearbox to metal bearings. It makes a lot of sense because you can add the missing grease it in one go.
@adrianharrison52082 жыл бұрын
You have to add lights to that body if you can, that would look so cool with all that detail.. Its strange mate you have got me into the buggies and rally cars over the years and now I see more of this sort of tamiya on you channel that I used to be really into.. Tamiya really does makes something for everyone

It's a sickness, once you start playing with your Willy you'll want more. The only parts they have in common are the driver tree and the tailgate tree. The rollbar, grill tree and main body have been modified for WW2. 58035 is modeled after the M38 were as the 58242 is a M151 MUTT (kind of). Side note, Tamiya has a MUTT in their collection in Shizuoka. Willy can do anything. I'm biased but the both Willy series are the best all-round vehicles Tamiya has made. Marketed as "versatile stunt vehicle" the first one were off-roaders, on- roaders and Tamiya's first rally cars. Wild Willy was also Tamiya's first ABS tub chassis, everything before it was fiberglass or aluminum. As that, it's a technicalogical milestone. Willy 2 is a parts bin wonder. With the right parts from other cars it can be just about any style of R/C. Perhaps not the best, but Willy can do it. As others have said, Willy is a blast to drive. It can be a wheelying, tumbling, goofing around giggle machine or a throttle control training vehicle. You said you didn't like Willy's Wheeler. I get that, at first glance it doesn't make much sence. When they were new I didn't think much of it either. Now 40 years later I get it and my Honda City is my second favorite car in my collection. Above the Willy's Wheeler, second only to SWB Wild Willy I got new in 82.

I remember seeing the original Wild Willy running in the 1980's and thinking how ridiculous they were. They were always overturning and rather poor off-road compared with the other Tamiya special racing buggies around at the time. However, many decades later, I can now better appreciate the design and think it would make an interesting addition to a RC vehicle collection.
