@charleschien69496 жыл бұрын
Interesting video. Thanks for sharing. Would you do the same video with Sony GM on A7III and Tamron on A7RIII? I wonder if the focus speed of the GM is affected by the different number of focusing "cells" on A7RIII vs A7III.

Why don‘t you just switch cameras so that you can test whether the af is worse because of the camera?

Because with two cameras you have the subject identical on both shots.

Exactly. The camera sensor (thru its focus points) is the one that knows whether a scene is in focus or not... and correspondingly gives command to the lens.

I feel like this is such an important lens for the Sony system. Reasonably priced and it seems to be extremely good. Hope this gets the industry moving. Excited to see Sigmas real native Art lenses, not just the Canon with integrated adapter. So big, heavy and clunky for a mirrorless I think

Based on what I can see in your test, the Tamron is faster in acquiring the subject when starting from zero (i.e. when the subject appears out of nowhere), but the GM is definitely better in keeping track of the face when the subject is moving. It keeps the face engaged most of the times, whereas the Tamron seems to miss the face easily and to take quite some time in re-engaging it. So based on what I can see my opinion is not very good about the Tamron. For me when shooting video a good tracking ability is more important than the speed of initial acquisition.

Interesting test Jason, thank you for putting in the effort and getting a bit of exercise at the same time. :) They both perform quite well especially with the response set to fast, pretty much a toss up with the slightly different attributes balancing out. The Tamron looks like a the bargain favorite by virtue of it's lower price, it was difficult to see any critical image quality comparisons in this test but they both looked good with the GM rendering slightly warmer.

The focus test might not be fair to the Tamron, because of the constant vehicle moving on the side due to the framing. Quite surprised the Tamron keep up quite nicely, it acquires focus much better when the subject is closer to the camera.

I was looking at the image quality maybe more than the focusing, and its hard to see an image quality difference, they seem to both have similar color, contrast and sharpness and background blur, maybe the Tamron even seemed sharper, I love saying that to drive all the people who bought the GM crazy haha, but Jason please do more image quality comparisons with the GM for stills using the A7r lll, I have been telling people that I bet the Tamron lens holds it's own against the GM, and so far it seems like it does, but I just wish that Jason would've run up and down a few more times lol

Also don't forget, the a7III shoots slightly better video quality so that may have been the reason! Just wanted to make this quick video to get it out there that the AF is solid! That's what matters to me! I will do the other test in the next few days but hard with such limited time
@obayedh6 жыл бұрын
Really!? I have found the G-Master is significantly sharper, much better bokeh and color rendering is way better than the Tamron. I know the Tamron is way cheaper and may be a bit faster, but then a7III is a better focusing camera too! Tamron is a good option for the beginners for sure IMHO :)

Jason. Thanks for the review I am looking forward to getting this lens my self. However with this video you have added some fuel to the fire for those that keep saying that the autofocus of the A7III is so much better than the A7RIII. I am not sure if this is true just based on the number of autofocus points. It is a topic that should be addressed for sports shooters but very difficult to do a reasonable test.
@JasonVong6 жыл бұрын
They did say the a7III has the same AF system as the a9 so I wouldn't doubt it. But with the work that I do, they felt the same. If I done sports, that might be a different story!
@WalterSmolenski6 жыл бұрын
Yes it makes more sence taking the 24mp autofocus system of the A9 and using it in a 24mp camera than to use a 42mp system in a 24mp camera. But that does not address real world differences of the A7III vs the RIII autofocus speed. Other camera factors like CPU etc will have effects, and the A7III is not a A9 for processor speed. Sorry, but I just get annoyed from forums where people actually think the reason all their pictures of the kids running in the backyard are out of focus is because they bought a camera without the best autofocus system.
@rvg19976 жыл бұрын
Jason, I enjoy your blog but I think you may have gotten your test wrong. After watching the video several times I think by having more of the building in the A7R3 and 24-70 it seems to focus on the building and then has to switch back to you. Where as the A73 and 28-75 just has to focus on you on the sidewalk. Love your videos but I think you need to do a retest using you as the main subject. I have the A7R3 and use the Sony 28-75 f2.8 on it with great results.

It’s so weird how all Sony lenses produces a “cold” feel. I believe the less post processing the better, just so I can go out and shoot more. It seems Sigma, Zeiss, and Tamron produces a warmer feel for skin tones. Am I wrong?

I didn't test for that so I can't say for sure. :(
