So many new surfers buy boards that drag them through the water due to the volume is too low for their body composition and or weight. Numerous web sites can easily solve this problem. When they finally make the decision to purchase their first NEW board at least it performs for them on the take off. Knowing what range of volume to purchase a new board ensures efficient paddling. Paddling all day on a new bird that drags your lower body through the ocean and can not match the speed of the wave for takeoffs is a major turnoff for new surfers.

I started surfing a 7' high performance unstable foamy 52L (I'm 6' and 65kg) and nearly gave up I was so frustrated. A friend lent me an 8' mal 95L foamy and I instantly started popping up - that very day I went from white water to small green waves. 2 years later I'm doing cutbacks, trimming turns, pumping down the line and cheater fives on a 7' 48L mal. I'm not interested in shortboards but my wife has one and I still cannot pop up on it to this day. If I had tried to learn on a shortboard I would have given up by now.

Great video, but I'd like to add something. Think about the width of the board you're getting. Everyone tells you to get a big board when you're beginning, but paddling efficiently is a huge part of surfing, and if you get one that's too wide it will limit your ability to paddle. You want to get as much of your arm as possible into the water when you paddle, and if you can only get your elbows in because your board is too wide you're not going to get going fast enough to catch a lot of waves. I see a lot of beginners, especially girls and kids, who have super wide boards because someone told them it'll be easy to stand up on, but it just inhibits them once they get past that. If you can't fit it under your arm, it's probably too wide for you.

Is there a point for an intermediates surfing where they could benefit to get on a more high performance board model? Would that help their surfing but just making it bigger dims to help with paddling and catching waves.
@TandCSurf
@TandCSurf 2 ай бұрын
Aloha Michael! You're absolutely correct. It's definitely recommended to get a slightly oversized high performance board when starting your progression to more advanced surfing. As you mentioned, this will allow you to paddle more efficiently and catch waves more easily. 2 key factors when trying to progress. If you're looking to find a new board to progress your surfing, our factory manager Vance is an expert at pairing the right board with the right surfer. You can give him a call at (808) 621-5000 Mon-Fri 10am-5pm HST or email him at TCboards@TCsurf.com!

@TandCSurf
@TandCSurf 2 ай бұрын
Determining whether a board is EPS or PU just from looking at it can be quite difficult. Typically EPS boards are lighter which is one way to determine which is which but not necessarily a definitive answer. You could try asking the previous owner(s) if they know what they ordered the board as from the shaper.

When would i ride a small raked fin over a large pivot fin? Thanks
@TandCSurf
@TandCSurf 7 ай бұрын
You should start by deciding what type of fin you want for the style of surfing you want to achieve and then size the fin for your weight/ability. It just depends on how you want to ride. A raked out fin will draw out your turns & will give you decent hold in your turning ability. A pivot fin would allow you to turn the board more quickly but might not hold as well in your turns because its smaller. As far as the size of the fins go that would just depend on your weight. If you're a small guy and got a large pivot fin, yes in theory that fin type will make the board more "pivoty" but if you're not big enough to push on that fin then it might just hold more in the water. Vice versa with the rakey fin. Yes it will help hold in the water and draw nice lines when you're turning but if the fin is too small then if might not hold like you want it to. Contact our surfboard factory manager Vance! He's extremely knowledgable on all things surf and can answer any and all questions you may have! 📞 (808) 621-5000 - Mon-Fri 10am-5pm HST. 🤙🏼

@@TandCSurf wow, thank you so much for the detailed reply. I usually ride large fins because I normally surf beach breaks with not much lower and figured I could use the extra speed. I’ve been surfing for 13-14yrs now and have always surfed bigger boards. My last board was a 7’2 epoxy with 52Litres. I surfed a friend’s 6’0 fibreglass all last year and absolutely loved it. My dad doesn’t want me getting finerglass because he says it is more fragile and I’m only getting one board. I’m looking at a 5’6 epoxy with 31L. Is that good or too small? Or should I go for a bigger 5’10 with 35L. I am 130lbs, 5.11-6ft and I want to duck-dive as well as I could on the fibreglass. PLEASE HELP

I came to get sponsored and she asked if I won any contests and I only won twice ,one was last aloha state games jr men surfing and another a HASA event but mostly place 3rd-6th in finals,she mentioned I need consecutive wins and I'll be considered for sponsorship so I mentioned that if I had a good board from them I could ,and she smiled and said come in here and pick a board for 100$ brand new. I picked a 6'0 and still only made 3rd - 6th in finals lol. Remember this time had all the greats coming up all future champs and top 5 riders in that era. Most of the guys I challenged is now your team captain's,or became champs, look me up lol washups

While I don't entirely disagree, I find Vol alone is not the best indicator.. years ago I got a fun board, rounder egg shape as still a year or 2 in and progressing the board had loads of vol ( 40l ) I think.. couldn't stand it..never turned well, no grip, couldn't duck it, it would sit on the water not in it when going down the line.. I moved to a more traditional shape with the same vol and my surfing came to life.. turns ( not like mikey wright ) I could turn it pump down the line make drops on steeper waves etc.. as I've moved forward a bit more I'm looking more at fins and rail outline.. each to their own though! It's great how we're all doing the same thing with such variation in perspective..
