Good vid man, I also saw some unexpected improvement in my surfing getting on a mid and have come to realize it’s because it forces better technique if you’re gonna do certain maneuvers. You can’t fool yourself into thinking you’re ripping but you’re actually kinda kooking it like you can on a shorty, have to think a little further ahead about your lines, use your body weight correctly, position on your board has to be right as you mention etc. I’m definitely smoother and faster on my shorty now as a result

Yep for sure. It smoothes out bad habits and fighting balance through turns, you catch waves with more control from the get go so your feet get set quicker too. It for sure helps with surfing technique and just over all confidence. Nice one Daniel 🤙🤙

The beauty of mids is setup. Many people who ride sub 6' boards scramble to keep pace with the wave after popup. They always catch the wave in line with the direction of the peel. They no sooner get to their feet and the race starts. This means the boards too short for your ability. Just because you can popup doesn't mean your board is right for you. Setup is positioning your bottom turn for an off the lip. If you never have time to do this you need a longer board. If you want to progress take it stepwise to minimal length boards.

mids really taught me how to use my backfoot as a pivot point to do more powerful turns. I got 6 of them and all have a round pulled-in tail :D

Great video Luke! Coming from a skateboarding background, I always struggled surfing smaller boards and once I discovered mid lengths, that was it! I only surf mid length now and it has helped my surfing massively!

Sweat video! I am 5’8 at 155 LBs… I was shredding before I had an ACL surgery. I just got cleared to surf again, and I’m thinking of buying a mid length board. I’m kind of stuck between buying a 6’6 twin fish at 39 liters of volume versus a 7’0 twin fin at like 43 liters of volume

Would love to hear a video on the reasons you would choose between a BP mini, chilli bean, reload and the timepiece. As each of those boards cover a similar amount of ground in terms of wave catching and ease of use. 👌

Yeh we can do mid lengths Vs hybrids maybe?? Chillibean is for super basics of thruster surfing, it's limited in bigger waves though. Reload 2.0 I really like as a shortboard kinda all rounder for your every day surfer. It's got forgiveness but you can surf it pretty hard to. Kinda like if the doofer and the chillibean had a baby.... Timepiece is just glidey, smooth and anyone can surf it. really it's way less aggressive than the BP mini but I would say a little more rewarding when you get a good one some how. The timepiece is cruisey where as the bp is a little faster paced. I'm surfing the bp's over any of the others at the mo.

What are your thoughts on fin setup for a mid length egg? - single vs 2+1 vs quad Especially for intermediate surfers that don't have a short boarding thruster skillset
@colabsurf
@colabsurf Жыл бұрын
Single fins are like the purest form of surfing in a sense. You HAVE to engage the rail and fin to have control. It's a very rewarding way to surf and will teach you best how to control a board but it isn't as forgiving as a 2+1 which offers more stability and control. Kinda like stabilisers on a bike accept they do make manoeuvres easier as well as just being more stable. Quads.... Yeh I'm not a huge fan to be honest. Always feels like a false promise, loads of speed and high line stability then you get to the bottom turn and suddenly it's a wild horse. I much prefer a twinny on a midlength. You get the same feels but it always has the looseness. It doesn't sneak up on you like a quad can. My opinion. Some people love quads. My kids learnt to surf on a single fin and he has a lovely little style on him give it a try as long as you aren't hell bent on being aggressive through turns. 👌

Why wouldn't I want one? Well, as someone who got into surfing in my late teens/20's but didn't have regular access, it took me a long time to get to the point where I even considered myself a surfer. Now that I'm there (and not exactly "young" anymore) there is just so much more I want to accomplish on short boards. Mastering floaters, cutbacks and snaps etc. Or at least doing them with confidence...lol. With modern groveler type really short boards I seldom have a problem catching almost anything. I don't have the greatest conditions where I am but there are not many days where even the long boarders have that much of an advantage. Most of the time if I'm not catching them, neither are they. Basically I don't find I have difficulty catching waves so it's not really a concern. This whole mid length trend and even Twin fin trend is passing me by and I'm totally fine with it. Not interested at the moment. I like thrusters and quads and ultra maneuverability. Maybe one day. But not until I'm physically forced to by age or other such event.

Mid length isn't new it's reborn. From 1973 through to 1980 and the arrival of the MR twin-fins, boards in the 7' range ruled the surfboard market. MR twinnies didn't really work in larger waves so when the Anderson thruster turned up mid lengths started to decline. Nobody much tried 3 fins on 7' boards so the heyday was over but a few of us persisted. What most people do on a

The only reason to get a mid (midlife crisis) length is if you want to regress your surfing to happy hand jiving with random cross step potential. Just look at Mikey Feb, WSL ripper to happyhand riverdance flatley footer in minutes (RIP Mikey). It's just a loophole in the too often ignored "No log riding under of 70 years of age" law. Never thought I would see the day where castration is paraded as a positive in the line-up. Here's some handy transport tips for those still caught up in the hype...you're welcome. kzbin.info/www/bejne/onLOhaucm8mUr8U

Cheers for the link. Each to their own I guess. Can't see many surfers who wouldn't have fun in the ocean on a midlength though. Also worth pointing out there is a lot of options when it comes to midlength shapes, so I would say it's a little ignorant to suggest all they cover is hand jives and cross stepping. If they aren't for you though that's cool 🤙🤙

@@colabsurf I heard tell of actual adults riding bogger boards having fun in the ocean. Does it make it right? No the f*&k way! I will concede however, midlength flappers are technically way above adult sponge rooters on comparative aquatic wave riding relevancy, and have can have any leftover respect I would have otherwise thrown into my trusty/crusty gym sock from 1986. Wwaarrhggg! There ya go, one on the house, now f&*k off! Here's something to consider next time you have stingray issues...kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5DQdJ2uYpeai6M
