I need my leather splitter to work better. In part one I'm refining the edge on the blade. I did work on this over several days, and total working time was about 3 hours. Time is always something to consider with any project.

tools these days in general, great for the novice, but it gets to a point where ya gotta fine tune em to our liken, we like to tinker, gives us confidence and it shows in the finished product

I agree completely, tinkering is a skill of it's own.

There is the same problem when dealing with chisels for wood. Unless you pay premium $$$ . It takes a long time to get them level across and get the ‘bow’ out. Might try getting a few Diamond plates to help. I use 3x8” plates than transition over to the wet / dry paper. Plates start at med , fine , extra fine. It does take patients

Great suggestion on the diamond plates, I have some 2"x6" that I use for knives and other tools, including my wood chisels. The cutting edge on this blade is 6", 8" overall, the sandpaper seemed like the best solution at the time, without spending a boatload of money on diamond plates, I have more patience than money, saving for a skiving machine.

You did a fantastic job on that my brother! It looks razor sharp! I was just telling my son yesterday, I need one of those! I actually use my belt sander to reduce the thickness of veg tanned leather. It works great and comes out very smooth, but it takes forever and you have to be consistent. Otherwise you thin it out unevenly. I can’t wait to see it in action!

I've been using this thing for about a year, setting it up can be a pain sometimes but once it's done it works well on belt blanks. Sharpening it should help for lighter leather. I put a link in the description for a similar one on Amazon that's half the price of this one and may be better. I'm editing part 2 now.

@@FatManLeather Awesome! I was at Tandy a little while back and the had a belly on sale, I don’t usually buy bellies because then tend to be soft. But this one was awesome but a tad thick for what I mostly do. I’ve been sanding it. 😂

I bought this Tandy Pro Deluxe splitter, received it yesterday and it came in with a very dull blade, absolute disappointment. I spent 433 with tax and shipping to get a dull un useable blade. there is a difference in my blade between your blade and mine. mine has a small secondary bevel and your method is not working for me. this bevel is about 3/16" wide and slightly steeper than the main bevel. I found other methods using oil stones but I'm having trouble holding the angle. Still researching a method for working this secondary bevel. I put in a message to Tandy about this super dull blade and have not heard back from them yet. I'm hoping they will send me a replacement blade that is sharp but not gonna hold my breath

I hope Tandy will rectify the situation. Secondary bevels can be troublesome in that respect, I have trouble with them as well. My best suggestion would be to make a jig to allow you to maintain the bevel, If you use some kind of bearing or wheel that can roll on the sand paper it would be easier to hold the edge in position. I may have to see what I can make, I could use it.
