Tango Negro, The African Roots of Tango by Angolan filmmaker Dom Pedro explores the expression of Tango's Africanness and the contribution of African cultures in the creation of the tango. Tango was a reflection of the social life of the slaves that were taken to South America -- including Argentina and Uruguay -- mostly from central Africa, particularly from the former Kongo Kingdom. Director Dom Pedro reveals the depth of the footprints of the African music on the tango, through this rich movie combining musical performances and interviews from many tango fans and historians in Latin America and Europe, including the renowned Argentinean pianist Juan Carlos Caceres

Tango has fundamental roots in Milonga and Milongones coming from the Afro culture(essential and identity) of Uruguay; its Carnival and the port of Montevideo(first port from the Atlantic Ocean). The Argentines later adopted it and popularized it as their own and exclusive thing

Tango = Tangere (greek word, "dance") Rythm origins = La Habanera, classic oprah composed by Ossorio, a spanish musician Musical instruments used in Tango = All of them... But drums. The original (argentinian) Tango doesn't have any drums, even to these days. It has violins, bandonions, accordions, guitars, chelos, pianos and even harps and basses... But not drums. Also... It has music apart from rythm. African people didn't invent any musical instruments, hence they couldn't have invented Tango. There have been many many many black interpreters of Tango thou, across many countries, as much as blacks playing salsa, candombe, jazz, blues, country... But even in the blues, which to these days is considered the african american music by excelence, the european influence is larger than the african influence. Simple: black people play their music with european instruments, european tonal scales, and even european lenguage.

Being Uruguayan doesn't grant you automatic knowledge on the subject. In fact your comments simply indicate how mis-informed you are on the subject. I would recommend two books. First, The Afro-Argentines of Buenos Aires by George Reid Andrews. It was first published in 1980 and is out of print but you can still buy it (abebooks.com, or ebay). It will cost a princely sum - and your library will be all the richer for it. Second, Tango the art history of love by Robert Farris Thompson (most books by this down to earth Yale professor is worth buying. He just knows how to join the dots about Africa and African-American influence in the Americas in the most subtle yet penetrating manner). Available from Amazon.

@@Stgfre A silly and weak argument. In fact it's no argument at all. This is impossible to such a closed mind. But let me try a few further suggestions; 1. Have a look at the paintings of Pedro Figari, especially scenes of tango in the 1860s and 1870s (when the art form was in its infancy). Figari didn't paint them until the 1920s, but they are memories from his childhood. As you know Figari was born in Uruguay (1861). 2. Are you familiar with the origin of the word 'tango'? Perhaps you should consult the La historia del tango 19 vol, (1976), vol 1, pg 57-58, written by historian Ricardo Rodriguez Molas. He was Argentine (1930 - 2006). Look into the origins of 'milonga' too. In fact you will find quite a lot of Argentine vocabulary has origins in the dialects from the Bakongo people of Kongo/Angola region. I sympathise that you don't know that black dance and black dancers all taught and influenced the famous stylists - El Cachafaz, Jose Mendez, El Pibe Palermo, Carlos Alberto Estevez (Petroleo). With your blinkered vision, you will never understand nor appreciate Gabino Ezeiza or Anselmo Rosendo Mendizabal's tango composition, 'El entrerriano' among many. It is your loss. But if you are genuinely curious, you will find the rich contribution of Africa and Afro-Argentines made to this art form.
