When I was training to be a tank troop commander we used Lynx's as our enemy force. You could always find them because whenever they took up a turret down position you could still see the plume of diesel exhaust rising over their position. Other than that I think they were a pretty decent piece of kit equipping the recce troops of the armoured regiments.

There were also Lynx recce dets in Canadian mechanized infantry battalions in the '70s and '80s.

These tank chats are great. This was a fun vehicle to drive, fast and anyone who has ever driven an M-113 with its front mounted engine as apposed to the rear mounted engine in the Lynx would agree with me that it was a much smoother ride cross country, especially crossing old tank ruts in training areas. We had them in my Regiment in the 80's. The 8th Canadian Hussars (VIII CH) as part of 4th Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (4 CMBG) at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Lahr in then "West Germany". We used them in the Recce Squadron (3 troops of 7 cars each & in Sqn HQ), Regimental Recce Troop (7 cars, the troop I was in as a driver) and the Liaison Officers (LO's) in each of the 3 tank squadrons used then too. I think the RSM had one as well? But everyone misses the most important part of this vehicle, if you pull down the trim vane and jam your pick handle under it like a leg it makes a great table to place your stove and prepare and cook your rations, fresh or even the American MRE's we were issued in the field back then. It also makes a great wash stand for your wash basin if you are having a "field shower" when you scrub your pits and *%$#. A little bit of good old field expediency. As we used to say in the Armoured Corps back then, any idiot can be uncomfortable........good times.

@@johnanon6938 Yes we sometimes called them Rat packs, or just Rats, we never got the canned US "C" rats, they where just phased out a few years before, in Canada we got IMP's but in Germany we got the US MRE's, 12 to a box if I remember correctly? In the the thick old brown plastic pouches, supplemented by fresh rations and hay box meals and on the weekends they would set up the field kitchens sometimes depending on where we were. The fresh ration supplements were good. I actually liked the dehydrated beef or pork patties if you actually prepared them properly and added some hot sauce to them. I remember some local German goulash soups and some broccoli and cheese soups too when we got our fresh rations. They came in a group that was wrapped end to end in plastic wrapping so it was kinda like a tube of soup cans. They also gave us this Cajun steak sauce that was pretty good, we sometimes got these big chicken patties that were like a kinda rectangular McDonalds McChicken patty. we jokingly called them "track pads". We would use the bread they gave us to make sandwiches and put on the steak sauce to spice it up, strange combo but it tasted good in the field.

During the 80ies I surved in an armoured Recce Batallion. Four of those types were paired with 2 Leopard tanks, an infantery group and a mortar team. It was a small combined arms platoon and a nice setup.

In 1985 I was in the Reserves ( Qyrang) and went to RV 85 as the regimental recce troop for the 8th Hussars.(using M38 jeeps) . We got to fire a couple of belts each off of the recce squadron Lynx. One of my best memories of the reserves. We also played enemy force for the lynx and were pretty successful considering .

My second troop was a Lynx troop of 7 cars. I have never loved a vehicle more than this one. Great mobility (never got bogged), great serviceability, great observation, and sneaky as Pete. Loved (and love) the Lynx.

The fate of much of Canada's Lynx fleet is interesting. At the end of the Cold War the Canadian Mechanised Brigade Group in Germany was brought home, but it was decided to dispose of its Lynxes. They were rather prefunctorily demiled (bits of armour plate was cut off) and sold to a Dutch scrap dealer who swore they would indeed be scrapped. Some time later a furious US diplomat shows up at the Canadian Ministry of External Affairs waving pictures of ex-Canadian Lynxes lined up at an Iranian Military base near Isfahan. Instead of their being scrapped an arms dealer had bought them and shipped them to Iran. I have no idea of their eventual fate, maybe the Iranians wanted to canabalise them as spares for their own M-113s.

When I was serving with the LdSH (RC) we were operating these vehicles in CFB Gagetown and finally at CFB Calgary, Harvey barracks. We were using them as Armoured Reconnaissance which we always thought was a bit laughable as these machines, tracks, were quite loud and the amount of smoke they produced from the diesel was immense, especially at cold start up. A bit hard to be sneaky in the Lynx.

@@rpm1796 Yeah. My brother is still serving and says there are problems with them. We (NATO) gave them to the ANA to kit out what we are calling 'the ANA Armoured Corps'. Bit of a joke. I guess the talis own them all now. When I was still in and shortly after their acquisition was announced, the zips raised the issue during an OGp. They were excited to get them (in terms of the reserves - more exciting than G Wagens). I pointed out that, essentially, they were getting an updated Cadillac-Gage Commando armoured car from the early 1960s. A vehicle deemed so useless, only MPs would use them in Vietnam. The zips weren't happy with that.

As a kid, I used to climb all over a Sherman and Lynx at a cadet school in Ontario, before they were removed. I didn't even know what the Lynx was, and wondered all this time. Nice chat, now I know more about just how cool it was!

I really missed mine when they took it away. Having a 50 cal made gun camp a ton of fun for the CC. They were a little tight for space and the drive shaft always made me a bit nervous but it was my favourite ride in the LdSH(RC).

Ah yes the pillow block. Had to ensure that it was properly secured or they'd be a heap of trouble. If it let go. Spent a fair bit of time on them with the LdSH(RC) in Calgary and the RCD in West Germany. Fun times especially as the LO's driver in Recce Sqn in Europe.

The Ontario Regiment, a army reserve armoured recce regiment in Canada has a historical vehicle collection, they have several too I believe, google them and check them out, if you go there you can even get rides in a M-113.

When I served in Germany, the infantry recce platoons and the armoured regt's recce squadron used Lynxes. I liked them as they were smallish and the tracks gave them decent mobility. Much better than the Ferrets they replaced.

As late as 1980 there were still a handful of M114s still being used at Ft. Knox, KY but ONLY by EOD personnel. The last one I ever saw, in running condition at least, was operated by the EOD people at Camp Shelby, in Mississippi. While stationed at Ft. Knox and assigned to Troop D, 10th Cav a number of our people, Scouts and Tankers, participated in an exchange/cross training program with Canadian soldiers. Upon their return to Ft. Knox our people expressed great interest in the Lynx and several preferred it to the M113 APC.

At the Ontario Regiment Museum we have a couple of Lynx's and they are a fun vehicle. A bit of a pain to work on though due to the rear mounted engine, the throttle cable runs under the floor and replacing that is an absolute nightmare.

It was still pretty tight inside, 3 guys, our personal weapons, webbing, one kit bag and one sleeping valise each, boxes of rations, and all the vehicle equipment, machine gun tool kits, radios and just extra stuff we carried in the field. I never served in a ferret but I was able to squeeze into one in an armoured vehicle collection, now that was a tight fit, even for the slim young fit man I was back then.

@@steveorn5244 I have never actually seen a Lynx but I was a REME vehicle mechanic and worked on Ferrets ( and Stalwarts ) in Germany. At 6'2 getting in and out wasn't easy and getting into the drivers seat was usually easier coming down through the turret! Setting the automatic adjusters for the Busbar height in the Wilson pre-select gear box gave your left leg a good workout!

The rubber skirts main function is as part of the fording kit and are commonly not installed by their crews as they hinder the tracks ability to clear mud. 113 family are a great platform.

They are for metal grousers that attach to the tracks and which are used in icy conditions.

In Canadian Army short-hand, it was called "M113 and a half." The historical precedent is the de-frocked M3 and M5 Stuart light tanks that Canadian armored regiments (e.g. Sherbrooke Fusiliers) used for recce during World War 2. Many Canadian recce regiments removed turrets to reduce the silhouette and because the 37 mm gun was near useless against 1943 vintage German tanks. Post WW2, the Canadian Army bought extra batches of M5 Stuarts and M4A3E8 Shermans and "defrocked" them for recce and APC rolls. They served until Food Machinery and Chemical corporation sold M113 APCs and M113.5 Lynx to the Canadian Army during the 1960s. Maintaining Lynxes is comparatively easy because 90 percent of the moving parts (engine, transmission, tracks, suspension, etc.) are stock M113 items.

Your ignorance about the Lynx and how its different parts works shows plainly. You also have a display model that is a complete mishmash of different eras regarding add-ons. I mean it has grouser holders but no toboggan rack. The rear engine door lacks the internal tool box. There is something in front of the smoke dischargers. The 50 Cal is also a mixture of infantry and vehicle mounted re parts. "The rubber track guards offer some level of protection". LOL. They are there to direct water flow on crossing water. duh. The Lynx was a sweet ride but suffered from internal fuel tank and drive shaft dangers, high maintenance, and low armour. Great terrain crossing ability, low profile and it's speed made it a killer recce vehicle.
