That is really rather impressive in its characteristics, especially the armour being capable of resisting 30mm rounds, I honestly expected it to just be proof against small arms and 50cal. A modern make of a smaller reconnaissance vehicle constructed like this could really be rather zippy around the field as well as reasonably cheap to manufacture and run with its less weight (wear on drive train) and only the need for a smaller engine.

E-Glass is bottom end fibreglass. The only thing cheaper is the chopped strand mat used in cheap speed boats. Aircraft use the stronger S-Glass or step up to Kevlar for impact resistance or graphite for stiffness (or mix all three together to get the required mix of properties). Four layers of kevlar cloth in an epoxy matrix 0.5mm thick will stop a 7.62 rifle bullet 99% of the time (once) (bullet proof vests use 20 layers to be sure).

I can confirm David said 30mm rounds, he said it can stand 30mm rounds from the RARDEN Cannon (which is the 30mm autocannon on the Warrior IFV) This is the same armor performance as the "plastic" Korean K1 Infantry Fighting vehicle (currently in service).

The nice thing about composite over steel is, you can put so many weird and wonderful stuff in it - glass, carbon, Kevlar and other fibers, some we don´t even know about yet, metal mesh for keeping electromagnetic interference in and out, plus it´s a better thermal insulator, it aborbs radiowaves, it is lighter and can be manufactured relatively easily. It´s downside compared to metals (as others pointed it out already) are the structural properties. If metal stressed beyond the elastic limits, it gets deformed, but its´still nearly as strong as before. The hull (parts) may be out of whack, but if it still is servicable, all is good. Composites, even with their better strength-to-weight-ratio, are compromised, they cannot provide structural stiffness anymore.
@zopEnglandzip

Most mbts have composite armour... It looks to me like the most sensible route is the placing of your polymer/ceramic/fibre armour over an easily repairable, modifiable, durable steel carcass which is essentially what has been happening with various packages on everything from hmmwv to challengers. Repairs and inspection/ndt is basically witchcraft on fibre reinforced polymers.
@sthenzel
@sthenzel 2 жыл бұрын
@@zopEnglandzip I had that thought also but left it alone, as this path was diverted from in the 30s because it didn´t prove as good as a welded or cast one-piece hull: Even slabs of super-composites are nothing more then armour plate bolted to framework. Still it may be viable if the vehicle only has to be 30mm-proof. Those slabs, as they are lighter, could be easily shipped in bulk to the maintenance crews.
@zopEnglandzip

@@sthenzel it'd be interesting to see the arrangement of ceramic in the chobham or Dorchester armour, I suspect as long as one steel structure is contiguous the other layers can be jointed and still do their job. Obviously the Dorchester armour on a Challenger 2 took 70+ rpg hits, seems like the most thorough testing of this method we're going to be aware of until it is declassified. Interesting topic, more interesting because it's obviously still evolving and there's no widely accepted standard practice yet.

I nearly choked on my coke when I heard that the armour was good against 30mm rounds, that's bloody impressive. I mess around with a lot of composites like micarta and G10 which are insanely tough for their weight, but not to the extent I think it overcomes a good high alloy steel for some components like armour and various chassis bits. The other factor with them on such a (in this case) very large scale is that once you've busted something its a proverbial nightmare to repair and in most cases you're better off binning it. There is some aspects though which do make it appealing in the sense you can mould and shape it with some very basic technology and still come away with something very practical along with the weight savings, maybe just one of those little projects that tried a little too early in the technological timeline
@zoiders
@zoiders 2 жыл бұрын
G10 is circuit board material and Micarta is just resin bonded fibre. Neither of them is a "composite" in armour terms or a structural material. By "composite" they are referring to solid and supremely strong ballistic fibre reinforced plastic like you find in helmets. Ceramic plates. Kevlar and rubber spall liners beneath that. Spaced box section steel armour filled with sand of all things. It offers far better protection than plain old steel. What you see here is proof of concept. Not a failure. The Challenger II and Leopard incorporate many composite armour components - this is merely an attempt at allowing that to trickle down to AFVs.

I had the pleasure of being on the build team at vickers Leeds back in 1999 when we had it there for final build. It pretty much came to us straight out of the autoclave at Vospers. The P stood for prototype btw. She was a pig to build, grinding fibreglass is not good for your health and sent me to hospital once with fibreglass in my eye. All the running gear and engine were from leftover spillages at RAF BICESTER where we went to rob what we could. The FOX turret was literally all we could get and was just for show. It didn't even have a barrel. We got it running with what we could, that engine came in and out more times than a sailor in a cat house. I could still do it now I reckon. Sky came to film it in the millenium and it got an airing on xmas day, it was then taken from us by DERA and even ended up on BIG BREAKFAST one morning. I've still got the VICKERS mag article about it somewhere in my collection. Good times but again, a pig to work on.

Just to clarify about DERA, Chertsey and QinetiQ, because David got it a bit wrong. DERA was all of the non-nuclear research and development parts of MOD merged into one body. So rather more than 'half of Chertsey' ended up in it, all of what remained was absorbed. For example the organisation I was working for at the time, the Defence Operational Analysis Centre, was also merged into it. Eventually most of DERA was privatised. Around 2/3 was hived off as QinetiQ and the remainder, doing the things that had to remain within Government, became Dstl (the Defence Evaluation and Research Laboratory), still in the Civil Service and part of MOD. Dstl has over the years absorbed some other bodies, the most recent and important being the research arm of the Home Office.

It is often used for toilet doors and partitions or shower cubicles in a commercial or educational environment. This isn't anything like MDF. Its literally several inches thick fiberglass. I'm pretty sure drilling and screwing fasteners into your tank would be frowned upon by superiors. Weight is relative. Its all about the mass to strength ratio vs. other materials like steel or aluminum. Even HDMDF can be lighter than the same modulus (sheer, tensile, compression, etc.) of steel plate even if you need something silly like cubic feet of it.

Quite an interesting concept. That composite armor doesn't appear to be at any real deficit to conventional metal armor in terms of protection. It's lighter in weight. It provides some additional protection in terms of reduced thermal and noise signature. It really sounds like a winner, so why did it fade away? Cost? Long-term durability?

Most likely a combination of all of the above, along with the natural conservativeness to anything novel to beauricrats and generals. IIRC, this was pretty much a "busy work" project to spread money around to the MoD research establishment.

i think the "weapons system platform" thing is just junior officers trying-to-get-promoted-lingo. since it covers fighter planes, bombers, vehicles, boats, ships, towed gun chassis, every small arms, actual platforms, etc, etc...

This tank actually sounds brilliant. In Ukraine has shown anything, it's that NLAW type weapons are a real threat to armoured vehicles. Any ability to make your vehicle more stealthy (thermal, noise etc) is incredibly useful. Your vehicles needs to either be almost invisible, or strong enough to take a real pounding.

Maybe I've just watched too many _World of Tanks_ videos, but to my eye, the fact that they made the lower glacis big and vertical enough to put advertisements on it is the first clue that they weren't really serious about the armor on this vehicle. :)

It sounds perfectly normal, and has been used in the automotive industry for years. It just means that the vehicle is based on the same basic running gear and chassis. It makes sense to refer to military equipment, especially armored equipment, as sharing the same platform. Many tanks, APVs, and speciality equipment (bridge layers, retrieval vehicles) share the same chassis and running gear. It is just easier to say they are based on the same platform.

Would it be more vulnerable to fire compared to traditional armour? That's a lot of plastic... I expect they used flame retardants?

IR would be useless to see this because it's plastic? That means all of the heat built up in the drive train from friction goes away because the armor is plastic? That doesn't sound right to me.

As much as I love our Dear David Fletcher. I have to correct him on pronunciation. QinectiQ is pronounced kin- eh-tick. And DERA (The Defence Evaluation and Research Agency, which actually had bases all over the UK but mainly in the south. There was a huge base at Malvern in Worcestershire which did Comms and electronics, also the people at Porton Down) is pronounced deh-ra (like terra) not dearer. I worked for DERA, we'd always get told off for the dearer use as they thought it made us sound like "more expensive"..... QinectiQ was the privatised elements of DERA, which the chief executive and his wife ended up with a majority share, not dodgy in the slightest at all, no not going down that litigious route at all

I really didn't catch the information, since it is so lightweight, can ti swim? Also regarding recent events, I think we will see a lot of new prototypes pulled out of nowhere and pushed into production. We see the raise of ultimate handheld AT weapons that will change whole concept of armored warfare.

If they made a CVR(T) Scorpion like this it would be amazing. Get out all the little flaws in the scorpion, put the Scorpion 90 gun on it, stick a small hard kill active protection system on it and you have a world class light tank.

There is no point to the 90mm An autocannon with missiles is better. And if you want direct fire he, a 120mm breech loading mortar is better.

@@matthiuskoenig3378 infantry support is the role of the 90mm along with light-medium anti armour. Then a javelin bolted on the top could deal with MBT’s. You don’t want to waste javelins on groups of soldiers/ bunkers or medium armoured vehicles which an autocannon can’t take out easily
