Hope that you enjoyed your trip to the States. At 4:48 - that plant is not a lily but is actually Ludwigia sedioides, commonly called the mosaic plant. I have a couple floating in two of my outdoor tubs.

Watching the videos makes me miss my Cichlids 😢 lol. I still actually have some but only the dwarf types,Rams, Apisto's but I've recently traded in all my bigger types Mbuna, Jack Dempsey's, Haps ect. One of my favorite cichlids is the convict. I had 2 pairs that would breed n breed n breed but the males were so amazing looking with dark blues and long flowy fins. I've always had Cichlids so I wanted to try out some community n nano fish and absolutely love it so far but will always have a spot in my soul for the bigger Cichlids. Another great vid, again, the variety of fish on offer in the hobby now is anazing. Fish prices are really high though, not to mention the food! But I have been out of it for almost 30yrs!!! I remember the most expensive fish in any shop were the equiv of about 3AUD then - I bought my Malawis at about 50c each max, my Oscar was expensive at about a dollar and I had a great Synodontis for many years, also rember his price about 50c, grew quite large. Convicts were about a dollar a pair, same for Acaras, Texas cichlids eyc., guppies were much cheaper as were goldfish. Also had a swamp eel that gulped air, Clarius catfish, talking catfish and more. Talking mid 1980s here 😮

Well that was fun, Kaity. I've been feeding with freeze dried California black worms. They come in little cubes and I've been smooshing (technical term🙂) the cubes against the glass. In one tank they're a big hit. In the others . . . not so much. I'll make a reel in Instagram and tag you in it. Oh the joys of fish keeping! 🙂Looking forward to your future posts. Nice video! Tropheus need a higher vegetable content in their diet than Calvus (and most other popular Tanganyikans) for example. That's why you often see Tropheus species only tanks. Some even keep them with a mbuna species like Salousi since their dietary requirements are similar. You can of course ignore this. As it's your tank! Tropheus are also very susceptible to bloat. Just something to consider when researching species.

Can someone tell me: What are these grasses that grow underwater at 0:45 - :50? I once had a dream twenty years ago of a grassy landscape --- maybe a few isolated trees, but in every direction just green, rollling landscape under a warm mid-day sun... ... And there was a big pond, almost like an olympic-sized swimming pool dug into the earth, but with steeply sloping banks rather than vertical walls, in which the grass continued to grow from the banks into the entire bottom of the pond. The water was clear, and the light such that I could easily see into the pond and marvel at the healthy green grass that carpeted every inch of the pond's bottom. The point is, lol, I've never seen anything like that, in reality.

Its so hard to find aqaurium stores like this where I live, weve got very few local aqaurium stores around my area. One close to me called Atlantis aqautic center is a very awesome place to see, so many fish to choose from, from salt to fresh water, but they also got display only tanks which are very cool fish in them, also some very lage. Store is located in terre haute Indiana, great store but every fish ive bought their has gotten sick at some point and died, i get my cichlids at petsmart which is alot cheaper but for some reason they always stay alive for me all cichlids in my tank are from petsmart, I just wish they had more selection of african cichlids to choose from.

Hi Kaity, it would be interesting to see what you get for the Tanganyikan tank. I keep Tanganyikan myself, black calvus and compress. Unfortunately, putting them with Tropheus might not be a good idea Tropheus like more plant based diet but they can be kept with other fishes like gobies

Hey Kaity, love your videos, very informative and educational. I have a question regarding brown algae, my tanks never had the problem until I put sand in the tank. How is it your tanks don't have the problem? I clean my tanks and just a couple of days later, the ugly brown is back. Your fish and tanks are beautiful. ❤

Sounds like "brown algae" (diatoms). They thrive when there are silicates in the tank, which in your case were mostly likely introduced by the sand. It is common "ugly phase" symptom for new tanks. They'll go away once the silicates have been used or the tank is more established

This is just my opinion, but I wouldn't mix the Tropheus (herbivores and get bloat, require very low protein food) with the Calvus or the Leleupi. The Malawi comparison of Tropheus would be a Melanochromis MBuna, they can be very aggressive and will eat your plants (if you want plants) they are normally kept in a species only tank... Calvus are carnivores (require very high protein food), and Leleupi are omnivores and not as aggressive as Tropheus. Altolamprologus Comps & Calvus are very aggressive to "each other" unless you get a lot of them. I have around 40 +or- as you saw in my tank. They are very good with plants unless the plant is right next to a breeding pair nest. Be careful when mixing Tanganyikans...do your research.
