Kaity, thanks for the tour, great window into an Australian fish shop. With regards to the pictus catfish, they are not similar to synos, different continent. Only Tanganyikan species of Synodontis exhibit the cuckoo egg-swap behavior you alluded to in your commentary. A Japanese researcher I met years ago wrote up the behavior from his doctoral studies on lake cichlids at Uvira, then a friend of mine in the British Cichlid Association actually demonstrated the behavior in captivity using frontosas and S. multipunctatus. The mouth shape and angle in different mbuna species has evolved so they can exploit the various biofilms that grow on the rocks they inhabit. It's nothing to do with them keeping their orientation to the surface, as you assume; they also graze the underside of rocks in the lake. Mbuna don't live near the mouth of the lake, they are found in all shallow rocky habitats throughout the lake. A friend of mine, Ad Konings, with whom I have dived in L. Malawi, has written a number of excellent books about all the cichlid species found in the lake as well as collaborating on some scientific research papers. I would advise anyone seriously starting out keeping Malawi and Tanganyikan cichlids to at least read, if not buy, some of his books. Money well spent.

I have seven YoYo loaches the clown loaches get too big and they can’t be alone so I opted for the Pakistani Loach initially got them to control a snail over population . Love their energy and insistence on getting in every nook and cranny. Also have Otocinclus in the same tank and two clown plecos which I hardly ever see. Some people don’t like their Hyperactivity and the fact that they can damage plants but, I don’t mind and only have Java Moss anyways . They like to nibble on the baby spinach leaves I feed my Otocinclus and Skinned Peas I feed my plecos and might nibble on the algae wafers a bit for my Cherry Shrimp , plecos, and Otocinclus so they get their veggies. Just have to keep the top covered to make sure the YoYos don’t jump out and occasionally check to make sure they don’t get stuck in something like the middle my Cholla Wood .

What's the environmental impact of the aquarium industry at present ? I remember as a kid people would steal rock from national parks and reserves Where there's money there's always corruption, especially in poorer countries As an outsider looking in, it appears to be just another consumer sport for those that can afford it....what is the true cost? Or is that something we don't want to look at?

These are all great things to think about!

Most things are sourced on private property or in public lands where it is legal. A lot but not all are also bred in captivity others that can’t are caught by locals and then sold unless they are protected species. Then In the United States at least there is state and federal laws about what can and can not be had different states have different laws about what fish can be privately owned. The only main issue I have seen environmentally which is the same for most exotic pets is for example in Florida where people have gotten common plecos not knowing that they will get big and then just get rid of them in public water ways as a result they have become invasive and are eating plant / organisms that the sea cows Manatees need to eat . Florida has similar issues with certain lizards and snakes and even some monkeys that got loose from a lab so the problem with invasive species isn’t just with fish. Mostly this isn’t an issue because for example where I live if my fish got loose they would not survive because it’s either too cold or too hot and they wouldn’t have an adequate food source. As for the economic aspect some people are taken advantage of in many areas of commerce in the world were as others actually benefit from it . Some people in the world in South America for example wouldn’t have a source of income if we didn’t buy the fish they catch or raise. My driftwood and so on all came from private farmers and people that harvest it on their own property

William believe it or not some people that you claim are victims in this industry from the fish that can not be bred in captivity make a very good living catching and distributing the fish to Aquarist an income they wouldn’t otherwise have. And rocks are everywhere not just national parks. Lay off the social Justice Marxist far left rubbish and go out in the world and see what’s really going on and in the process perhaps do something that actually helps impoverished people instead of just complaining about stuff and demonizing everything in western civilization

@@MClover420 you're absolutely right, I'll go back to walking in circles with the rest of the sheep...enjoy your goldfish or whatever's - that you've deprived of their god given connection to Mother Earth for your own selfish enjoyment. Namaste MFR and happy aquariuming

Clown loaches - don't! Unless you have a very large tank with lots of floor space. These things are highly territorial and can be quite aggressive when defending territory, and they do like to take up a large territory. Their behavior disrupts the territories of the mbuna, which, ime, leads to disputes. They're cute when young and don't cause trouble, but when they grow larger, so does the aggression. If you have an mbuna community which is settled and fairly peaceful, best not to spoil it for the sake of wanting a 'pretty' fish. There are other mbuna which are just as pretty. Maybe others have different experiences, so they might chime in with some advice.
