The "pro vowels" bit is a perfect analogy. Yes, music theory isn't essential to write music. But without any theory knowledge, you wouldn't know that you're essentially paying to use letters.
@fcf82692 жыл бұрын
You would be surprised by how many great musicians wrote songs that went to the top of the charts without knowing a single line of music theory. Did they use pre-made packs? Nope... They sat down with their instrument or sampler, and tried things until something made "sense" for them musically speaking. They could have learned theory and cut the time needed for exploration, but that would kill their creativity because knowing theory they would never try something they were told "won't work"; and that means no innovation would ever happen.
@carbdebunkshate89672 жыл бұрын
@@fcf8269 theory > > > > > > > > >
@kohai-kun92612 жыл бұрын
@@fcf8269 disagree with this take. Knowing theory isn't gonna stop experimentation. If anything, knowing what's "expected" or "common" often leads people to try new things out *because* it's not what's expected. I really don't see why people are so averse to learning about the things they're into. Learning music theory isn't so much about learning "rules that must be followed", as much as it is learning about how to identify and describe aspects of music in a concrete way.
@fcf82692 жыл бұрын
@@kohai-kun9261 I didn't exclude that theory can lead to breakthrough and innovation; but it is clear that most of the great things happening in music history were not only driven by knowledge, but at times by the lack of knowledge. When you know "something", you are setting yourself in a box with well defined walls; going outside these walls is something that our brain does implicitly; because we are used to accept some things as being true, and live and operate in the realm of what is true. If you would know nothing about physics, you could think about creative ways to explain what gravity is, because you can "feel it"; and yet you have no clue of the theory behind it. For music you can't follow the same process because it is not something you feel and there is room for getting it right in different ways. Music either sound good or not, and that is what theory teach you. Once you are bound to those rules that make music sound good, you follow them and avoid to go out of that path. Learning is not wrong; nobody is against it; and the only ones against it are lazy people that do not want to put time in it, and just look for a way to get good at something or make money in the easy way. From my perspective you need a base of theory to do anything, but when you start to fill the voids on your own, you may end up in places that others have been already (so you wasted time, because you could read a book to learn it), but you may also end up in a different place you would probably not end up if you were only following what you know.
@fcf82692 жыл бұрын
@@carbdebunkshate8967 Some musicians write their song before even know what a scale or the circle of 5th is. And when they learn it they improve their work (sometimes it ruin it but that is a different story). You don't need to be an expert to write music or play an instrument; you need the right skillset, a good dose of patience and inspiration. Then if the results are a masterpiece or garbage, that is up to debate. I listen to music that sound like garbage of mixed sounds with no interesting qualities, and those are called artists. If I need to study to understand why that noise is considered music, then it is not art anymore. I get feelings listening to music, looking at a painting or a sculpture; that is what art is all about

@AzureWolf168I’ve been producing and composing for a few years and I’m studying composition in school, and the general consensus even from professors that have doctorates is that what you make will never sound exactly like what’s in your head. You can try and get close, but it’ll always be different somehow. My advice is to embrace it and go where the song takes you, not where you want it to go. Also try learning basic music theory, it’s actually really simple and you can find good videos on KZbin about it. Hope that helped :)

I'll be honest my composing has gotten WAY better over time as you start familiarizing yourself with basic theory and how certain chords sound and feel can really streamline your production... but when I listen back to the first things I wrote you can hear I just put everything into it because I didn't know the "rules" so I had none lol I think the best line to ride is learning enough to guide you to how you want to sound but never feel locked into theory or what others tell you is right.

I was blown away to find out how this young producer does not have an ounce of idea on how chord progression came to be in the first place. He was clueless on what a major and a minor progression is about and when I told him, we are gonna use Key of G, I-V-IV modulating up half step for the Outro and will end in G#, he looked at me as if I am speaking an alien language or maybe Klingon.

I hate how people mystify music theory, or act like it's some sort of arbitrary set of laws. It's just a tool to look at music through, literally a form of literacy that learning can help you better conceptualize why the things you hear sound the way they do, and a framework you CAN CHOOSE to use when making music. But I suppose the idea of 'evil cabal of musigicians' is appealing to people who want to rage about not knowing stuff.

Yeah when I heard the price I lol'd because it made me think about AAA video games which cost less than that typically ($60 or so). While those are also somewhat debatable in quality and how they are priced at times, the better examples still represent many man-years of work by teams of dozens or hundreds of people. The chord packs aren't even close to deserving a pricetag like that.

Right now I'm waiting for Unison to release their new product. Unison's new product is an awesome pack with over 1500 finished projects for all DAWs you can modify or just export and publish.

You mentioned faulty equipment, but didn’t go into any detail! As a guitarist and vocalist, faulty gear is the bane of my existence. Whether it’s tuning heads that don’t stay in tune for more than one song, broken pickup switches, amps that sound fine until you put any distortion onto them at all (at which time they sound like the skin on day old gravy being wrapped over your ears), bad gear can make a potentially amazing show into a literal shitshow. And that’s before you even consider that you’ve got 2 or 3 other people with these same potential issues, and all the other problems a live show can encounter!! And all for £50 (split between the whole band) if you’re lucky, because low end venues can be horridly cruel to new or newish bands. It makes music into a chore, and I’m sure stuff like this and what you’ve mentioned in this video have combined to make countless musicians give up. Thanks for making this video, because I think this is a really important part of the music industry that people take for granted.

"Hey man how much did we make off this show? About 25 bucks split by four, so that's like... $9.50 each. It's good to see this rap shit's finally starting to pay off."

listening to ALL genres of music is the best way to learn how to write music. After I branched out of the things I listened to as a teenager I all of the sudden could figure things out by ear. Its amazing how our minds can store what we have heard, and although it takes practice, and a little drive, I think composing from ear is by far the most pro level thing one could do.

The only issue I have is to figure out what notes they are bc I make songs up vocally

Ohh really? How many monthly listens do you have on Spotify? Thought so. Quit making excuses to not better yourself by buying PRO LEVEL chords

I couldn't agree more. Besides, having pre-made chord progressions doesn't mean you'll all of a sudden know how to make compelling music, which is unfortunately how Unison markets their product.

Some would argue that the most pro-level is not even needing to hear 😉

Much better in my opinion - it's write "every" genre of music. Like if you never wtite black metal you need to write 2 maybe typical, but recognizeable as "black metal" songs in that genre and then you'll be good.

The irony of clicking on this video and first having to watch an ad for unison midi chord pack just makes it all the more fun to watch

Despite having written my own sequences for years, I got a MIDI chord pack once out of curiosity(it had arpeggiation lines and articulations, so I would certainly rank it above generic chords), and that was all it took for me to figure out that no MIDI pack would actually help me make better music. If I had to give one piece of real advice to beginners who are interested in getting harmony "over with", it's simply that they should focus entirely on using notes within a scale, the smaller the scale, the better - when you want to impose a specific feel to the harmony, turn it into a progression: select a new scale that overlaps the old one(e.g. D pentatonic to D major) and continue from there. Now you have a track that can engage with some complexity while only considering a tiny subset of the notes on the keyboard at any one time. This vastly reduces the trial and error aspects of building up chords and makes harmonization speedy even without specific theories of chord progression. Automation/correction tools just add "icing on the cake" to this approach by eliminating your errors.

The important question: Are the Chords in the barbershop thing you have at the end of each video PRO LEVEL????

Thank you for making this video! I will once again admit that I, out of a personal frustration at the end of last year, actually bought it and so much wished to have recorded that scammy checkout process. The world needs to know to avoid this company AT ALL COSTS.

That is actually gold, as soon as you recommended I watch one of their ads a natural one just started playing before I got the chance to pause the video.
