Today we test out some heavy metal slugs made of a bismuth alloy by Ed. We see how these compare to the metal these are meant to replace, lead and found out the bismuth slugs have very different results. This was one of the more interesting slugs we've tested and they worked very well.

Scary slug indeed - especially as it fragments so much. If it were ever to be made commercially - that would definitely be one of the most scary slugs ever. Not the kind of you see in the movies "Ouch, I got shot in the leg, I'll just put a bandaid on that and run for the next hour...[till the movie ends]". No, that's more like "where is my leg???" That is one _VICIOUS_ slug! Blasts through body armor, a freaking HUGE "wound cavity" through the gel and yet it fragments so you shouldn't get too much over penetration. I'd like to second a vote for seeing it against building materials. Maybe a fairly long box so 2x2 foot pieces of drywall could be slotted in, see how many it will go through.

1.5oz + Flat Meplat (nose) + HARD = impressive. Those sharp corners showed their wadcutter style, not just on tape, paper, and shirts, but kevlar, jelly, and (nearly) lead. Hard corners were able to push the kevlar past its limits, now to get them a little less brittle! Great content again!

Those looked like real Thumpers to Danny's shoulder (thanks for taking a bunch for the Team, Danny) and were incredibly devastating to each target. Other than being difficult to control for followup shots (if required in a Social Setting) as long as you hit your target with the initial barrage there probably wouldn't be any need for followup shots. Even if the intended target was behind your neighbors refrigerator two blocks away. In one word... DAAYYYUUUMMM!

@6:30 The shape of the projectile after it’s been “trimmed” a bit by the magazines reminds me of the way large bodies of glass tend to break. It makes the same cone pattern, like it’s shearing the edges off but leaving the core, which is better supported and more stable. I’m guessing that the crystalline structure and the brittleness are the common factors. Very interesting. Also reminds me of flint napping. (Flint slugs anyone?! I know one of you mad lads can pull it off.) EDIT: Every self-respecting adult should have a space pen like Danny. I never leave home without it. 👍🏼

Another smashing episode guys. Much love for the Slingshot channel reference. Its amazing to see how well this channel is doing after so many years and trials, and to see how the Tauflader-Family has grown. I would love to see a colab between yourselves, Slingshot channel, Forgotten weapons,and the Slow mo Guys. Heres to the years ahead!

I think that alloy should be fairly non-toxic so it might be safer to leave them in. I wonder if the non-toxic properties would make them a better option for hunting. But then you'd have to dig bismuth crystals out of your food.

@@vincentcrowely6772 the slug vs gel fragmented severely, what makes you think after going through a home invader its going to make it's way through two, three, four walls and a back yard? The ballistics demonstrated just don't match your statement. A rifle round would do that, but not a fragmenting round. That's why they use fragmenting rounds on airplanes...so you don't pierce the cabin/hull.

I have that mould and several others from Accurate and LBT in various calibers for handguns, ML and large bore rifles. All share that enormous meplat. They all penetrate deep and straight...and shed velocity like a duck sheds water. Perfect for hogs and bear in cover. I have not cast it in bismuth yet. Initial trials with .53 round balls were not great. Too fast and they shattered. Horrible penetration. Balls are light for caliber so I was really excited to see what you got here. Bismuth may be the salvation of traditional muzzle loader hunting in California. I am not at all shocked by your result. You HAVE to be cognizant of whatever is behind the hog you hit with one of these cast in lead for it will SURELY pass through. This of course is the desired result of a large diameter projectile that is heavy and slow. Big leaky holes on both sides of the beast. Still sorry to see so much frag but it out performed the balls by miles. Guess I will go plug in the old Saeco. I know your focus is mainly shotgun slugs but you just did us all a great service. Lots to extrapolate. Awesome content. Cheers!

Great for hunting pigs, especially for those wearing kevlar (just kidding don't worry), not so good for hunting for meat since you'd be digging out a bunch of little metal fragments that would melt around cooking temperatures

@@Lilith-Rose bismuth melts at about 500degF. You shouldn't be cooking anything to that internal temperature!
@Lilith-Rose

@@ScottKenny1978 with most cuts I like to put a good sear on the outside of the meat and leave it at that, I like my meat as rare as I can get, so the internal temps aren't an issue. However if any piece of the metal comes in contact with the pan I'd be having beads of bismuth melting out of the meat and rolling around the pan, plus I don't really want to be chewing on or swallowing sharp shards of metal so I'd still choose a brass or copper round for hunting if it had to be something other than lead
