This song didn’t used to bother me, until one of my best friends, who was a Corporal in the US Army, was killed in a tragic training accident several years ago. Ever since his funeral i tear up every single time i hear it. Respect our troops and honor those who fell in service to our country

When that plane leaves the formation, always get teary eyed and goose bumps!
It almost yanks your heart out when you see it in person and the plane starts lifting away, doesn't it ...

I get choked up just thinking about that. when a friend of mine was killed in a training flight in 2017, the flyover of T-38 trainers did the missing man and I swear all I heard were sobs after the jets had passed overhead. I know I couldn't hold myself together.

I remember hearing Taps every night before lights out in Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base, and I remember thinking about all the people who came before me to serve our great nation and had lost their lives in service. I ended up writing a poem called TAPS and reading it to some of my flightmates. I ended up writing it a bunch more times for some of them. When I got kicked back two weeks for failing a PT test, I heard the poem read over the PA system the night before they graduated. Just wish I could remember the poem. Hearing Taps and seeing the flyover is such an emotional experience. Thanks for sharing.

@@ReformedSooner24 thank you for your decision to help protect this great nation!!!! And I'll give you the advice that was given to me by my recruiter and friends in!!!! Don't judge basic on the first 3weeks that's ALWAYS the worst if you make it past that you should be golden!!!!

I remember basic at Lackland like it was yesterday. And I was in basic in 2001 it felt amazing being part of such an amazing group of people dedicated to protecting our country. I miss being in. I felt as if my life had purpose.

Every time I hear TAPS I think of my great grandpa, a Staff Sargent of either the 82nd or 101st (can't quite remember which, I was really young hearing his stories) Airborne who flew and dropped into Nazi Germany controlled France on D-Day. He was an amazing man, overcame the odds and I got to spend 10 extra years with him hearing his war stories, seeing the tears run down his cheek as he remembered every little detail of his time over seas.. he passed away at the age of 98 in 2003. In his last few years he really opened up to me and my mom, I really hope it helped him find peace at the end..

Taps alone gets me every time. Then adding missing man formation gets tears running. Watching the flight in person, is so powerful yet peaceful to see the plane ✈️ flying solo toward the open sky 😢

One my last Duty station at N.A.S. Pensacola I was assigned to the Armory on the magazine crew. The Armory was behind the National Cemetery. Funerals were held almost on a daily basis and I heard taps almost constantly. To this day, almost 30 years later it brings tears to my eyes. At my father's ( Korean war vet )funeral at the Springfield National Cemetery I held it together until taps was played. I'm glad I won't hear it at mine.

WWII saw 405,399 Americans killed, 670,846 injured and 30,314 missing totaling over 1.1million casualties (more than the current population of the state of Montana) Among those numbers were 88,119 dead airmen, 63,209 wounded airmen and 41,057 captured airmen. 90% of our airmen captured by the Nazis survived the war while over 50% captured by the Japanese died in captivity. The United States lost 65,164 aircraft.

"I can't believe that pilot broke formation! Especially during a funeral procession! Did they not rehearse and train before this major event with so many people present? Did the pilot get the flight pattern confused or something? Imagine how embarrassed that pilot was flying almost straight up while the rest of his squadron was following the proper flight plan!" - Donald Trump during interview
