The most I credible is that Leo never told anyone about his exploits he live a simple life without ever bragging about his time in the army. His wife and family came to know about his exploits when the people of Zwolle wanted to commemorate his exploits and managed to find him and invite him to the Netherlands and only then did we hear about what he had done. By the way he was for Québec's independence.

his exploits remind me of those of Albert Roche, a french soldier during WW1 (nicknamed the first soldier of France), who singlehandedly repulsed a german attack after all men in his trench were killed by artillery. He also liked going on solo trench raids, and, on one occasion, broughtback 42 german soldiers and officers, along with all their machine guns. in 1915 he was taken prisonner during a raid behind the lines , brought 10 km behind german lines, killed his captors, and made the journey back carrying a wounded french officer on his back. He earned every medal for gallantry a french soldier could earn. But he never made it past private, as a result of his... let's say stubborness. After the war, as his exploits were known, he was invited to dinner by King George V himself, and was one of the pole bearers for the french unknown soldier burried under the arc de triomphe in Paris. He died in an accident in april 1939, when a car hit him as he was exiting a bus in his native village. A modern estimation is that he singlehandedly was responsible for more than 1100 german prisonners during the war, and was wounded 9 times.

I have personally witness more recognition at the international about french speaking Royal 22e Regiment than anywhere in english speaking Canada. there's , statues, memorial and plaque in french about the bravery and or collaboration all around Europe even in Colorado Spring NORAD base about the 22e regiments and others franch speaking regiments. Nothing about that in Canada, only in Québec like they say.....

Yeah, the Nazis feared the Canadian troops in both WW because, in WW1, the Canadian had a no prisoner policy. You were a German or an austro-ongrian, you were dead, no matter if you were wounded or not. That reputation of being ruthless and cold blooded followed us in WW2 and German officers were actually scared when they learned they were going to fight Canadian troops. Guess being ruthless and taking the bridge of Vimy in 4 days, during WW1, kinda helped us there.
