Thank you so much for this. I was born into the iraq war, neglected and abused my entire life & I’ve been trying so hard to feel better, I have a fear that my default self is a person who is in shock and frozen in time given that my foundational years have been spent confirming that. Years of therapy, medication, self medication, guided meditations, yoga & a cat later im still really really struggling. But yesterday I got a jasmine plant. I feel rooted & hopeful… my brain feels extra malleable. Thank you. Thank you thank you. To anyone reading this I love you and I see your suffering and your pain and i am here with you. and we’re all in this together ❤

I've struggled with depression since before adolescence. It's amazing how pervasive and difficult it can be to treat. Eventually my issues became compounded and I couldn't deal with life unless I was high on something. Depression can and does lead to addiction. Now I'm living one day at a time and trying to stay healthy, balanced, and sane. Mindfulness is a pillar of my practice.

That gave me a lot to think about. I'll have to listen to it again to let it all sink in. The quote at the end about "why are you in prison when the doors are open" really hit home for me. Stay blessed Ms. Brach. You are gifted.

Depression can have so numerous causes, so odds for finding a cure is like finding a needle in a haystack. And then there is the issue with what is the cause of its cause and so on. Sometimes the cause is as simple as a vitamin deficiency....

Untrue. I have had horrible (suicidal ideation and the whole nine yards) depression... and also dismissed meditation, yoga etc. Sure, meds can be used as a bridge...but often the root causes aren't truly treated and healed. In depression there is rumination and many cognitive distortions, which actually perpetuate neurotransmitters that create more issues. Meditation, yoga, mindfulness, can change the neurotransmitters...as well as tap into the neuroplasticity of the brain for change. You can absolutely rewire the brain and make it less prone to depression. I'm doing better than I was on meds. I meditate daily, yoga with Adriene daily....as well as studied the neuroscience behind it. There has been research that shows the brain changes, inflammatory changes, microbiome changes, gut/brain axis changes, neurotransmitter changes. It is possible.

I love your teachings but as a therapist I disagree with some of your perspectives on depression. But don't claim to be an expert so sitting with my own desire for the right path of healing. We are all on our own journey and no one holds THE truth.
@Alphacentauri8192 жыл бұрын
I don't have the time stamp where she claims to have "the truth"...can you elucidate? She does have a doctorate in clinical psychology and her dissertation was on meditation for eating disorders. She's not heading in Willy-Nikki with this information. Additionally, be careful of your own cognitive distortions, the lenses, in which you digest her info. She never says meditation is the only way, and will help all cases of depression. She supports medication and other realms, as adjunctive therapies...a bridge of course, but still does not completely dismiss them. Unfortunately, too many over rely on meds and don't address the deep healing, which includes the holding space, presence (that is found often with things like meditation). Being open and inquiring, to how/why, she came to her conclusions is important to clarity.

When Tara says major depression is "50%" inheritable, and its "genetics", that is a deceiving statistic. Yes, it necessarily implies that there's an increased likelihood, or potentiality, within your physical structuring, but this only means that the person needs to put even greater effort into transforming themselves into a more resilient mind and body. How else do you think humans differentiate themselves over time into the various phenotypes there are? It's not merely environmental - but its the combination of environment, and the transformation of self/mind that leads to the assimilation of transcendental capacities for self-regulation. What does this mean? It means that the epigenetic systems of the mind-with-other-selves, as well as the intercellular signals and intracellular mechanisms of genetic regulation, can effectively change genome function over time. This is what the science shows, and is also what Denis Noble or Terrence Deacon, both theoreticians of biological function, argue to bet the case: that the genome is just a passive "register" of organism-environment couplings. The job of the disordered mind is to change the genome as much as possible, so that the being of the organism expresses a more 'ideal' relationship to external and internal realities.

Many would have died if it wasn't for anti depressants. I have severe ocd and THATS NOT CLEANING. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for them. The whole journey for healing is not one thing, one thing cannot be the panacea. It's always a mixture. Mindfulness alone too cannot heal depression. Don't no why I feel angry listening to this... I'm hoping it will pass as I go through it and I enquire.
@factsmatter74423 жыл бұрын
Oh of course. Antidepressants have helped a lot, but you do realize they are an epiphenomenon of the materialistic culture we grow through - yes? If our culture were more spiritual, the messages we would be receiving, and the force of their suggestibility, would be to make people far more resilient than they presently are. This truth can be hard to wrap your mind around, because the minds of most people is so structured by the cultural reference points around them, but if you read my post (the most recent since yours), the world is actually designed to push human beings towards points of self-transcendence. But the transcendence, as Brach notes, is not a personal, solitary transcendence, but a transcendence that is simultaneously intrapsychic and intersubjective. A solitary transcendence, if it happens, is usually rare; whereas a transcendence that is coupled with other peoples is strong, and resilient, and robust, because our physical bodies are actually designed to structurally complement one another.
