How to Stop the War Against Yourself - A conversation with Tara Brach & Dan Harris
It’s possible to actually be addicted to self-criticism, especially as a way to keep yourself safe. But evidence shows that rather than safety, this pervasive habit in our society creates deep suffering. This conversation between Tara and Dan Harris dives into strategies to deal with your own self-hatred and cultivate a forgiving heart. (Note: This was initially created as an episode for 10% Happier Podcast)

Soooooooooooo healing - tears of joy and gratitude on my cheeks❤❤❤. After 30 years in 12 step recovery this insight extraordinary. You are the female Buddha incarcerate for me as a woman - your mirroring means so much to me - the preverbal in a traumatic household and patriarchy ughhh so hard to unpack!

I felt inspired to write this. It cannot de defined with concepts because it is the opposite of the act of classifying anything. Describing anything. "Understanding" anything. It is the opposite of theory, of concept. It is the opposite of fiction. It is the opposite of the idea of opposition. It is the lack of words. It is the true language, and it is zero language. It is the presence. It is the opposite of tradition. It is the only tradition. It is not so much life, but the instance of being alive. It doesn't need a reason. It is the most powerful force in the universe. It is the creation, and the creator. It is. You mustn't love it. You mustn't hate it. You mustn't rush it, but revel. Not with a plan. Not in good faith or bad. Not because of some destination or epiphany. It is far away only when you think it is. It is only esoteric and abstract when you think it is. When you think it is, it is not. When you don't think it is, it is not. Despite your convictions, it always is. It is not comparable. It is never comparison. It is the lack of judgment. It is the lack of adherence. It is the complete resignation to stand above or below others. The forgiveness of need. The forgiveness of self. The forgiveness of misunderstanding. You will never understand. You know.

Yes! Lack of self forgiveness feels a bit more accurate according to the awareness of my experience. It doesn’t quite feel like hated but is certainly is close to that feeling of hatred. It’s getting there if there is no self forgiveness.

I am coming to the same conclusion: that all of the criticism and "punishment" directed our way has had the effect of splitting us into good and bad. This splitting can cause personality issues for adults which lead to a splitting of ourselves, often into a "good" self and a "bad" other, but to accept with kindness and integrate our dual nature, to integrate ourselves into a "whole" is our ultimate goal, to no longer be either/or, two sides of a divided self. If we accept ourselves, we can then choose who we truly want to be. The novel "Wizard of Earthsea" by Ursula K. LeGuin comes to mind.

"Splitting" is part of the diagnostic criteria for people with personality disorders. A true sign of a mentally healthy person is this exact recognition and acceptance of the "whole" in ourselves and other people. Keep going and you end up with Buddhist concepts of non-duality, impermanence, and emptiness. Add compassion ("karuna") and non-harm ("ahimsa") and we're on our way to making things better for everyone.

@@sallykirkstephens8415 -- The story is about a young wizard who improperly uses magic and inadvertantly calls into existence a "dark" entity. He then must journey and find a way to overcome the "evil" loosed upon the world and upon himself.

The anxiety is caused from fear of humiliation I think as I listen. Mine is related to being a perfectionist but never feeling secure in relationships. Dan seems to be describing my experience. When Tara gets back to you on that Dan, PLEASE share.

It's self? What is self? This is the core question in buddha dharma. It's a concept that attaches it's "self" to each . Thought, feeling, pain etc. MY is a concept. Fun right? Check it out when you are still. The identification of self is the suffering. Thoughts come and go. Feelings come and go. Look for the Me My . Where does it arise? In this vast space of mind. Xxo m

Goodness . Both Jewish speakers. We are perfect as God our Creator is. However the things we do and say are the sin, darkness... Whatever you choose to call it. Not us. It boils down to You knowing you have been made in the image and likeness of God The Father of all. We have to choose to unclothe ourselves of our filthy ways, thoughts, actions, words. And behold, you will see the core of you is indeed lovely, pure, kind, unique. Just take off the dirty garments of thoughts words and actions and put on, or live in your trueness. Live in your goodness. Your pureness peace loving nature. Ask Christ to forgive your choice of ways (however they entered into your life) and set you free from your own doings. Then, receive that freedom of His forgiveness. Live and feel... your freedom. Keep reminding yourself, your not putting on those dirty garments that made you feel shame, but the New Garments of Righteousness, given to us through Christ Jesus who enables us to do this. You are not your deeds. They are separate from you. You are not bad, unlivable, unworthy. What you do is. Accept you are right, and wrong does not fit your God nature.
