TARDIS Model Kit Build [Re-Upload]

In what is my final TARDIS (Police Box) related build for the time being, this episode sees me take a bit of a break from scratch building by putting together a garage model kit for a client, though I do have to modify it to some degree and make various details for it that aren't provided.

I love your channel, because you really allow us to see all the decisions being made, and the problem solving going on when your doing a job like this. A lot of people think artistic endeavors are super heady and giga-brained tasks, but almost all of it is just decisions and problem solving. Choices and Perseverance.

Well thanks for noticing. Most projects are simply a case of solving lots of small problems until the job is done. Yes there is an element of experience to draw from, but that's built up over years. I'm always happy to share what I know because that's how information lives on.

Doing a kit is not the norm for me, usually I scratch build everything as I prefer it that way. I have a few videos on my scratch builds in the back catalogue for you to catch up on.

I do like these kits, but I don't think I have the patience for such precise work. I'm happy to just tart up the CO Tardises, and I'm still using your techniques for texturing and weathering!

To be honest, from memory, these kits were at best, very simplistic to stack together - if you can "tart up" a toy, then you could certainly do these!

@@PBProps The painting and weathering is always the most fun part for me, it's nice not to have to be so exact and delicate with the brush for a change!

Did a similar pressboard Tardis kit in the '80s. Not as sturdy or nice as this (opening door), but it did come with a door handle. Great work as usual! Enjoyed the techno korabushka music. =)

I think I know the model you're talking about; the balsa wood kit from the Doctor Who Fan Club of America. I remember that one well. Never got to own one, but was envious none the less. Thanks for watching!

@@PBProps I believe that was the one. The corner posts were balsa, the rest pressboard. I still have it, though the top lamp was lost at some point.

Ah, this looks very much like a Jamie Bate's JBLasermodels kit, of which I have a 5th Doctor version of his to build in my stash. Very communicative guy who will supply you with signs, glazing, but not everything you need. Good looking kits, but the little details you have to add will probably put most people off, wanted one of his 6th scale versions but my shelf was too small! Nice job bringing this one alive!

I’d really like to see you tackle some more 1 to 1 scale props from the classic/ new era who, think that would be cool to see a “handles” head from the 11th doctors finale and maybe some sonic screwdrivers and various other things. Maybe even some Baker era props! Just a thought, keep up the good work! 👍

I do want to do more props, but the main issue is the cost and the storage of the finished items. I've always had plans to do lots more, though one thing that I'd never touch is the screwdriver for various reasons. Thanks for watching!

I think the best way to get a tardis besides buying from your lovely self is to get one 3d printed (That's what I have done) Way cheaper and works way better plus you don't mess around with having to buy loads of small parts.

3D printing does seem to be the way to go. If I had the finances and space for it, I'd buy a printer and sell the various models as a kit.

Would super glue gel be okay as an alternative to the wood glue as i dont have any wood glue

It should be fine, but you may struggle with getting your parts positioned before it goes off. Just be careful, is all I'd say.

After a couple of years of the video being up, I received a spurious copyright claim for the use of a piece of music that the claimer had no right to. Being such a microscopic channel, I had no way of defending myself and KZbin allowed the claim to proceed. I removed the video, thankfully I still had the original footage and so I re-edited it for a new upload, sans the music in question.

@@MichaelCarter1967347053 It's not too clever a situation, especially for the small channels with no support networks or teams to fight your corner. Effectively, we have to fight alone.

May I say you went above and beyond with this loosely termed 'Kit', I would have binned it on sight!! It would have been much quicker to design a build your own scratch build TARDIS rather than sort all the problems out with this one. Finally, it does look 'to me' more like a model of a REAL 1950's police box, rather than the TV series TARDIS from Dr. Who. Reasons why: 1) No wood grain effect whatsoever on the exterior (See photos of the Airfix Kit 'Welcome Aboard') 2) No odd white panels in the glass. 3) The black lamp!! A poor decision by your customer, In my humble opinion. 4) The 'Police Public Call Box' Signs at the top are not quite deep enough for the TARDIS, they look a little squashed. Your patience is amazing and your skill knows no bounds 🙂

Thanks for the comments, I appreciate it. As to your points, this is actually based on a very specific look of the prop from 1973. While the props up until 1980 were made of wood, they were actually textured in Artex, so the grain rarely showed through that, though the modern (post 2005) props made the grain a pronounced feature. The black lamp housing is correct for the period, but I have to say that I'm not overly fond of this - neither am I fond of the all white housing that appeared from 1977. The window panes were just sheets of cobex by this point and didn't have different colours, but this did come back later on with the fibreglass prop. This kit suffers from being made up of ply sheet layers and they can only use what's available, that's why in some areas, it doesn't look deep enough and this does have a knock on effect. Even the corner posts cannot have the correct sized radial beading, so it has to be undersized to fit. It's just one of those things - but when I made my scratch builds, I had a far greater choice of material thicknesses due to the plastic that I was using, so I could get it right.
