Wow! That's fascinating. As a beginner I never even knew this technique existed and assumed all those sounds were two separate guitars. This was great!

they are usually two guitars, bands try to keep things tight, these type of strumming is very nice if you are a solo artist but playing in a band is a very different experience

This is why Justin is one of four KZbinrs I actually give directly to. I wish I had the resources to do more, but I can't, so the four I choose are the top shelf of the guitar teaching for me. The others are Ben Eller, Marty Schwartz and Mike from Art of Guitar. Really Justin is the only one you need, but the others have some unique content and are very easy to follow. Yes, there are a hundred others that are great teachers as well. Those work for me specifically
@misterjay34 ай бұрын
Marty is a go to for me as well. I'd also add Griff Hamlin (excellent structured content and blues focused)

Man it's just really true.....if u pick up the instrument and play it every day even just 15 min here 30 min there over a string of days the brain does this crazy amazing job of taking over with the muscle memory stuff kicking in to where it's like playing THROUGH you! 🤙🏼

Love this Justin. I've just moved over to your course from another online tutorial and the progress being made is night and day. This is exactly the kind of music I'm wanting to learn. Almost finished Grade 1 (decided to start right from the start again after originally being taught classical guitar many years ago). This is the motivation to push on and get to Grade 3 and beyond. Keep the videos coming. Really like your way of teaching.

This is really useful advice! I will be playing two years come March. I’ve explored trying to target strings while strumming for at least the last six months - and arguably even further back before I consciously realized it thinking back on the songs I was trying to play. In hindsight it helped to: 1) When I first started playing, I didn’t know about Justin and was using Fender Play, Yousician, and the Gibson (then known as Zoundio) app with songs arrangements for beginners that started teaching players to pick individual notes of a song melody without ANY strumming (first on a single string, then working up to 2, 3, and more strings). Those courses slowly incorporated doing the opposite where students only were playing rhythm strumming arrangements for the same songswithout picking individual notes (similar to what you find in Justin’s mobile app). In the last six months, that’s where I really started playing arrangements that started combining both. I didn’t start off with Justin until I stumbled across him about a year into my journey, so I don’t know whether his courses have this sort of progression - however, I do know that his mobile app focuses on strumming chords in the area where you can play along with a backing track (I’m not talking about the course videos). Yousician and Gibson’s apps definitely do this method best with their gamification approach and striving to always beat my own score or compete with others students’ scores - getting some sort of playing feedback and accountability really makes a huge difference. Fender Play has a similar profession in skills but it’s missing the immediate feedback element. I am hoping Justin’s app will start to offer a similar gamified approach with a similar progression (in addition to the current casual playing a long without pressured feedback, which encourages players to experiment and try things on their own!) because it really helped me begin to shape my picking accuracy while strumming. It’s still a work in progress, but the progression above helped me do it so much faster and with more confidence. 2) I didn’t initially make an effort to mute open strings when I started playing new open chords. Once I got precise with those chords, I allowed myself to make mistakes. Doing both of these things helped me build an awareness of where the strings are. Then once I was precise when open chords and started experimenting with other chords or picking out individual notes in between, I only muted strings that are absolutely necessary. Like I never mute the E and A when I play an open D, nor do I need to because my strumming has become precise where I confidently only strike the correct strings. However, when I play a “rock” G chord the way Justin prefers, I have to mute that A since I can’t have that open string ringing out. Nobody really instructed me to do it this way - it just sort of naturally happened. I hope this advice helps others, and perhaps Justin will take my suggestion to add a gamification element and opportunities for picking melodies on individual strings as outlined above into his app’s course progression - and add the ability for the app to listen to the guitar and provide some kind of score/feedback.

Justin!!! THANK YOU!! You just upped my game considerably! I started playing a little over 2 years ago. I zoomed. I also play-perform 9 other instruments; but guitar is my newest. Hence the "zooming" ...lol...Now, I'm hitting low Intermediate level. Strumming, singing, performing...playing out...but I've had to back my train up. I literally put the cart before the horse, so the cart got to market first! lol...This little bit of instruction gives me added edge while I focus on tge more mundane technical things Ivebignored: scales, circle of 5ths, transposing, and fingerpicking. THANK YOU!!!!🤗🤗🤗

But now that I'm finally beginning to hear my timing/rhythms sound something like music... aka. Melodies hear n feel. I find myself desperately in need of this lesson. Again, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU...!!! You are a great teacher. Wish I had met or found you years ago.

I remember this from the old course, and I think I said this exact same thing in either the comments or the forums, but there is 1 song that helped me big time get comfortable with this technique. Wonderful Tonight. If I would mess up the picking pattern I would strum, however muscle memory from the picking pattern would kick in & I would do this subconsciously. Now I'm attempting to learn bluegrass & picking the melody while strumming. Oh boy is that fun :) Great lesson for sure, and this technique is useful when you mess up a picking pattern :D

Thank you for this lesson. I've played the guitar for a while, and while I can play a 12-bar blues ok, my strumming technique is not very good. Must strumming lessons are kind of boring, this one keeps my interest as it actually sounds like your playing something that sounds like a song and not just aimlessly strumming, and offers areas to explore. Great stuff.
