I sent your teepee videos to my friend in Brazil who has been homeless since January due to the once-in-500 year mudslides in Teresopolis. This is an ancient design and very efficient. It should be a design for the homeless of Haiti also. Thank you for taking the time to explain how to make one step-by-step. I probably would not have figured it out on my own.

i love this, i am a long time canvas teepee camper and when i go hiking i always take a tarp with me to make a simple diamond enclosure at my base camp, the next time i go out i believe i will try making this super simple tarp teepee! thanks!

I emailed a few of your videos to friends in Brazil who are homeless because of major mudsides in January. I really appreciate the teepee videos, as well as the one on your .22 caliber bolt action survival rifle recommendation, and the Cherokee kitchen. A similar rifle is made in Brazil by CBC. It is basically the bolt action version of the Marlin model 60. You are very unselfish for you and your wife to share your knowledge. Thank you.

thanks for the video. one way you could save some time in making the poles is if you have a table saw and cut off the corners at a 45 deg. angle.another thing that you could do is to put spike nails in the bottoms of the 2x2. and it might be cheaper to buy a 2x4 and rip it in two.
@BushcraftOnFire15 жыл бұрын
Yes.. we have had a small fire in ours. You need to leave a small opening for drafting.. but it works pretty well. You can use different numbers of poles.. but we generally use 6.. yes.

Dave: Thanks for the explanation. I didn't realize that was one of your first videos, as the quality is very good. I was checking your videos because I am planning to make 3 Pyramid Teepee tents, for 2 of my boys and myself. I identified it as more portable than a multi-pole teepee, since it should use only a single center pole, sectional in 3 pieces. Not as sturdy, though, so I appreciate your teepee system. I'm looking forward to seeing your new video!

I have always thought that of all of the expedient shelters out there this is the most efficient. Others can be made simpler, but the standard teepee is the most efficient too me. Thanks for the look. Might go ahead and make me a large tarp and pack it up just in case.

@kev2556 I apologize.. I thought I mentioned that on the video.. but I must have forgotten. The natives would use something called a "bullboat" which was basically a skin covered shell that would protect the top from rain. We would do a similar thing if it was a heavy rain. Light rain doesn't really present much of a problem though. Thanks for asking!

@NancyToday Actually it is one of the best was to tie the poles so the don't move around, the fraping(part where you wrap the rope around its self,recall 1:50) holds it in place, it is called a tripod lashing.
@BushcraftOnFire15 жыл бұрын
Mike.. Somehow I missed this question. We use 2X4's ripped down the center to make our 2X2's. Even if there is some condensation (we have used it down to 25 without any major problem) it is a steep angle and so doesn't really drip into your face
@BushcraftOnFire13 жыл бұрын

Finaly some one showed how to make this teepee.To me thats the great thing about tarps they do not weight much, and can fit in to a pack. For myself I wouldnt want that big of a tarp but is I can also was have shelter
@YeOldeTowneCryer12 жыл бұрын
nice video. clever idea. Using geometry, your 20 foot tarp will stretch around a 6.3 foot diameter. With a steep angle headroom for a five foot-six person will be about one foot from the wall. I tried using pvc pipe for a 16 foot teepee, but they felt too flimsy after I set up the tripod. I had hoped to make three telescoping pieces that fit inside each other to conserve space so it would fit in a car trunk or minivan. Guess I'll have to go with four pieces of 2x2 with metal connectors.

Hey my Brother.. Thanks for your suggestions. This was only the 2nd or 3rd video we ever did.. and we were in a learning process (for camera work). I show the rock tie off system in other videos.. As for the pole.. we simply tied the tarp to the center pole in the back and raised it. I probably won't "fix" this particular video.. but We will be doing more.. and I am thinking of a remake with a "pyramid tepee" system.. So be on the lookout for it :)

@thermaldog The optimum is to have the tarp 2 times as wide as tall. So a 10X 20 is great.. which I believe is what I used here. You can also use an 8X16, 12X24, or a 9X18 (but you probably won't be able to find that last size)
@Tossdart15 жыл бұрын
Dave, what I liked about this video is you never cut cordage. Don't pound your tipi to the ground! If you don't have a grommet hole. Tape well & use a hole punch, tie to poles so some space is around bottom. Watch my stove videos you will understand. I still prefer canvas.
@cheesypasta13 жыл бұрын
@BushcraftOnFire Hi sir, you might get this all the time, but the annotation says that the total amount of degrees of the triangle is 360 degrees, but its just 180. (60deg between each pole is correct in the video) Thanks for the great video.
@BushcraftOnFire14 жыл бұрын
@valandill1 I attach it to the rear pole on the ground.. and then raise it up... Yes I secure the poles... I throw a lashing around all of the poles at the top so that they remain in place.

I don't want to sound like a spoiler but if you get winds of more 30mph its going to rip them grommet holes from the tarp, i know i had made a lean to with a tarp and rope and the wind tore and ripped out the tarp holes. just something to think about when you get high winds.

Milo.. You don't even need a center pole :) Make sure you have a grommet on the top.. You can either hang it from a tree limb.. or you can put 4 poles on the OUTSIDE Or inside.. your choice :)

I was looking for a teepee set up by 1 person. I like your video because its very inexpensive & seemed pretty easy. I saw your son Doo helping but could you do this yourself? Or I should say could I im 5'2" . You used the cord to pull the tarp up on the top right? Well asking if 1 person could set this up? Nice video.
@davidwendell64719 жыл бұрын
One person could definitely do it.. But it might take a bit longer. The tarp needs to be twice as long as it is wide
@BushcraftOnFire15 жыл бұрын
Ride.. The top is tied to the back pole.. not a center pole. It is then draped around the other poles and staked at the base.

I assume that you are looking for lightweigth DarkColmar.. PVC has limited useage IMHO. You need these poles not to bend too much.. and even breaking the PVC into jointed sections I would think they will bend at 14'. Try it and let us know :)
@MiloTsukroff12 жыл бұрын
Dave: This is almost a great video. Some technical complaints: At about 4:34 you say, but don't show, the center pole tied to the tarp and raised up to create the teepee. At 7:00, 2 poles can be seen in back, which explains what you did. At 6:00 you mention a rock for a tie-off at top. Not shown is how you did it, what size rock, etc. Those are critical to understanding how to do it. Could you please consider fixing this video?

6X12 might be too small for anything but a child's playhouse. It might fit an adulat or 2.. I have never tried it. 7X14 should fit 2 or 3 and an 8X16 should fit 3 or 4. I have had fire in mine.. keep it small and in the center and you should be fine. You would also do well to leave the door open some unless you like to inhale smoke :)

How would u do this to put a small fire inside for warmth. The plains Indians had a top open for a chimney but Was hoping someone would show that
@BushcraftOnFire11 жыл бұрын
We had a sire toward the opening.. which worked pretty well.. but no.. they don't have a smoke hole per say. You can, of course, make a small stove that is contained (we did a video on that as well) that could heat the inside.. or you can use hot rocks ( a technique that the natives used extensively to heat)

Some thing else that's great about a teepee tarp, Is you can build a fire in side it. and not worry about being smoked to death.
@BushcraftOnFire11 жыл бұрын
I didnt put a video up on it.. but it's the same premise.. just stake out the corners in a pyramid shape
@Seademhawks11 жыл бұрын
Nice idea for fun, but you'll die of smoke inhalation if you build a fire inside. There is no inner layer to create a smoke draft like the plains indian tents had.

I am selling a piece of farm machinery next week to finance my friends' campsite. They have been staying at a church shelter since January, but the church has now run out of food. The homelessness problem in Brazil is huge. In late April, 35,000 more were made homeless in southern Brazil from floods, so the government has not come up with promised aid for my friends' town of Teresopolis, near Rio de Janeiro. A couple thousand people died in Teresopolis.

Great videos! One comment and hopefully that's ok with you - only meant as constructive criticism. The camera work could be a little more informative if it was focused on the areas being talked about with zooms in and out. A lot of times, the camera doesn't focus in close on the technical details, or zoom out panning the complete picture of the structure or whatever is being talked about and shown. Lots of good information though, thank you.

I'd be very careful about putting a fire inside this tarp as it is not fireproof material. Even a Dakota fire would melt this tarp, or worse. Large tarp shelters can have problems with rain. Weight of rain strains the shelter. Runoff can be disastrous as you have not put a rain ditch round the base before you started. Don't pitch it on level ground in heavy rain.
