I bought one of these 2 years ago. It's a superb piece of kit. As you point out, lots of internal space which is great when my dog comes along with me on wild camps, whilst also leaving plenty of room for other stuff. The double vestibules make life so much easier when it's tipping with rain - you can get out on the sheltered side or do your cooking on that side. Very glad to have mine. I can live with the pack size.

I have used my Scarp 1 for 3 years and it's a gem of a tent. You might find a sturdier or lighter tent, but definitely not both. The fact that the cross poles are optional adds to its flexibility in that regard. The space for 1 is fantastic and it's straightforward to pitch and take down. For those who don't like that it has to be seam sealed, or that you have to add guy lines and tie out points, this is well flagged on the Tarptent website, and personally I understand why the company want to keep the tent as flexible as possible for the widest range of customers, especially as they are based in the US. Bought mine before the 2019 upgrades which took care of a few minor niggles (two way door zips, extra arch pole guy points), so the only niggle worth mentioning is the the not so great door ties, although they actually work fine. The fact you can't stuff pack it is a minor issue, but the benefits of having the struts far outweigh that minor disadvantage. One final point is that I would only consider it a 4 season tent if you use the cross poles. So clearly I'm a fan, but for good reason 😃

Took my scarp 1 up on Bleaklow for the first time last week as it came in the box, a little experiment to see how it would fare without the extra guylines or pegs. It was flapping around so much in gusts of up to 30mph and the side facing the wind was buffeted on the inner all night. Few points from my first night out in it: - It is essential to add the extra guylines, as you said for the price it would have been good to see these coming with the tent. Or at least have some linelocs sewn into the loops so you just have to add the cord. - The inner mesh pockets are not functional at all. - With one side of the inner floor pulled in, the footprint is actually a similar size to the new Lanshan 1! Saves me having to buy a separate groundsheet :) - Despite the (inner) footprint being the size of a Lanshan, the space inside is phenomenal thanks to wide arch pole and tall pitchloc tubes in the corners. - Overall I feel like you pay for the design and not the materials with this tent, they don't feel very robust. Just my feeling, but time will tell. Looking forward to seeing more adventures from you Paul!

I disagree. The fly of the Lanshan 1 is 15D and the zippers #3. The Scarp is 30D and zippers #5. Furthermore the pole on Lanshan is 8,5 mm, the Scarp 9 mm Easton poles ( same mm as Hilleberg)...

Bang on Paul. Back in Jan this year I had been planning on getting a terra nova tent from their online outlet but they were out of stock. After searching the net I stumbled across some posts hidden in the deepest darkest corners of mountaineering forums by people (mainly Scottish and Americans) recommending a little known tent called the scarp. Thank GOD I saw those posts because I took a leap of faith and ordered one straight away, fearing a stock shortage coming post lockdown. I get the impression their popularity has soured recently in part down to your videos no doubt! I was just lucky with my timing but I’m sure I could sell mine on eBay for a profit. As for how good it is - I’ve used it lots this year in the black mountains where I live and it’s a tent for life. It’s not the lightest, cheapest or sturdiest but it’s a close second in all those categories which makes it overall the best hiking tent money can buy IMO.

I would recommend putting a few blobs of silicone either on the bottom of your sleeping pad as well as on floor of the tent to fix how slippy it is, that worked really well for me :) Great review Paul, I can't wait to see you use it more! I had the same reaction to the door ties when I first started using the tent, but actually having spent time in the tent I now prefer them to bungee ties with toggles - Tarptent's ones are very simple & robust (you can't really break or wear them out) and they are quick and easy to use. I'm not entirely sold on the guy lines complaint - I've had a Scarp 2 for 4 years now and spent well over 4 months worth of nights wild camping in it across various parts of the UK and Europe in all temperatures and seasons including in the Arctic and above 10,000ft. In that time I've only genuinely needed the side guy lines (and crossing poles for that matter) a handful of times (and one of those times was my fault for pitching the tent in the wrong orientation in the Lakes in Spring this year - Unless you are planning on pitching side on into some serious wind, in an exposed pitch and without the crossing poles, you will be fine without the side guys!). For added context the Scarp 1 is a stronger tent than my Scarp 2. To be honest Tarptent appear to have fixed most of my main complaints with the tent in the latest update (not that I have used it) - what I really want now is a Dyneema Scarp 1 (Please make this happen Henry Shires) but I'm told that taping the curved pole-sleeve seam is a nightmare so we shall see! I totally agree about the pack size Paul - it is one of the biggest drawbacks of the tent. You can remove the pitch-loc end struts to pack it smaller which is effective but I personally don't bother as it is a bit of a faff and one of the tent's best features is that it is wildly quick to pitch! If anyone is looking for more thoughts & suggestions on the Scarp 1, Chris Townsend has done some really insightful reviews if you google 'Chris Townsend Scarp 1'.

I like to hammock camp but sometimes a tent is needed for a trip. I purchased a Tarp Tent Moment ( including the free standing kit ) back in 2011. Used it on one car camping trip , the next day I dried it , packed it , made a run home and traded it for one of my hammocks for the rest of the week. Later I was telling a friend about it and he did the same with his. His complaint was condensation. No condensation with mine , I had it wide open over night. My complaint was having the material a few inches from my face , to confining when laying down. Made me think I was sleeping with my head in a box. It's a well made tent and would be ideal for backpacking if you can stand confining quarters. I read where it was redesigned in 2019. Irregardless , I replaced mine with a different tent.

I think the toggle for the inner is good, you don't have to tie a fancy knot or use a bit of plastic, it works fine as it is. An excellent review as per usual Paul. Can't comment on the Scarp but I have the Tarptent Moment DW and can say with little fear of contradiction it is no Soulo. The Hilleberg is on another planet in comparison. The Moment DW is advertised at being around a kilo but by the time you make it trail ready (extra stakes, guy ropes, footprint because the floor is so crappy, the full length crossing pole etc) the weight is closer to 1.6kg. For 200gms more I can use my One Planet Goondie 1 or the Soulo for an extra 800 gms. Either of these two are a far better options camped above the treeline. The Moment DW is fine for what it is but it's not 4 season in my book. The floor is the worst I've ever come across in more than 50 years of hiking. It's like sleeping on a greasy pole. I've put all sorts of silicone strips across it to little avail....Don't sell the Soulo.

I think you already answer your question ;) I would buy the tarptent and invest some money into a great sleeping mate ( maybe Sea to Summit). And you have an absolute amazing and stable 4 Season tent. I own the Soulo RL and use it here in Switzerland in the Mountains. Unless you are camping in a place without any shelter around you and with winds over 100km/h (63 miles). You do not need it, any keep in mind that tent is designed for heavy Snowloads. I do camping trips for over 35+ Years now with many tents and did camp in many Storms and Blizzards around the World. If you buy the Solo investing into another lightwide summer tent (Tarptent Notch Li) can make sense if you really use it for backpacking. But if you buy the scarp 1 you don't need the Soulo in my opinion.

I've made the comment to Henry at Tarptent, so maybe they'll start to include them. Why would anyone want a tent with unsealed seams? Is there a genuine reason for the seams to not be sealed at the factory?
@malcolmjcullen3 жыл бұрын
Some "hardcore" campers consider themselves experts and would rather seam-seal it themselves. If it was always done in the factory and the tent was $20 more expensive no one would mention it and it wouldn't be an issue.
@jlockwood1313 жыл бұрын
Possibly, remember this started as a very small cottage company and they simply didn't have the space or time to seam seal all the tents. That being said now that they have grown and offshored you may be correct. Equally while $400 is a lot of money, in the world of lighterweight trekking tents it isn't so much and you will struggle to source a tent of similar weight, quality, and stormworthiness (In the UK at least) for less in my opinion (But I am always interested in suggestions!). Bearing in mind that seamsealing has to be done by hand I can understand why Tarp Tent don't do it as standard at the price point. (Copied and pasted from another reply).

Maybe they are working on the logic that we will all get so fed up with the Squarespace ads that we will all join on mass just to remove the need for then to sponsor/advertise everywhere? I coded my own website from scratch using just a text editor. I've coded it in such a way that I just drop images into a 'gallery' folder & add EXIF meta data to the images, & my website code uses a loop to 'read' all the image names & key EXIF data & then decides which images to display depending upon the viewers input, & all the title, camera, lens & exposure data etc is displayed on screen with the image using a loop. So I don't have to 'code' each time I want to add a new image to my gallery - the coding is divorced from the specific file name paths. viewers can select to see 'All' or just 'Landscape' or 'People' or other such gendres because I have added them to the EXIF data, I can even add multiple gendres to an individual image so that the coding displays the image in more than one 'galley'. The user can also select to see images from specific camera or lenses that I've used, selectable from a drop down list - this has actually been helpful to myself. I am not a computer programmer, I just googled & experimented a little until I got things working, its not rocket science, & can be 'fun' & educational if you give it a go!

Hi Paul. I've found your channel very interesting & useful for information on certain things, so I will be watching more 👍🏽 I am intrigued to know your thoughts on the Scarp 1 v the Hilleburg Soulo... I am really torn over these 2 tents. The weight & cost pushes me to the Scarp 1, but knowing the Soulo is a complete bomb proof tent, I kind of feel thats the better buy. Would be really interested to know your opinion on which tent is better. If you were suggesting 1 tent out the 2 which way would you go? I can't afford both unfortunately, so its one or the other!! Be good to hear back from you Pal 🙏 Keep videos coming, I really enjoy them. All the best McHaggis !

Loving the videos Paul, I binge watch them while the better half of watching the mindless rubbish on TV. I seek advice: I’m after a new tent to take on my motorbike. Weight not an issue, budget isn’t a problem. I want something easy to put up, (I detest feeding poles through) fairly high so I’m not bent over all the time, and space for me and my gear. Something that sleeps 2/3 people would be ideal. Anyone have any suggestions?

really good review paul i really like this tent would be great in my climate but for the price i am the same as you the seam seal should be already on the tent and the guide ropes and poles should be in the price and they would probably sell more tents good job on the review

Just up now Paul is my comparison to other similar models, let me know what you think!

with the outer skeleton (for want of a better term), I do not see why the sewn in poles are required. I am certain if they were removed the structure would remain unchanged. Perhaps the option to pull these out would be useful. That said, what was the total weight for all of this Paul? That and the pack size would make it impractical for long hikes or would you disagree?

They are still required to pitch, and they are removable

Hi Paul, thanks for the good review, there seems to be no UK dealer for Tarptent that I can find so assume you bought direct from them in the US. If so did you get hit for any import duties etc. Thanks, Nick.

Looks decent , similar to the vango helium - weight wise

Do you think the porches are big enough? I think they look tiny in videos. Never seen one in person. Really doesn’t look enough space for cooking in safety.

Yes, I’d rather have one big porch over two small ones.

Never ever had condensation in 100s of nights in all weathers. My Alto used to get it all the time. In my opinion the top venting it used to have was much better if you used it properly.
