@@NY411Info Yes, but is it actually a lower range ratio? Probably not, or not by much. The Personal Pace system on a lawn mower pretty much relies on how much belt slippage there is and/or how deep the belt rides in the transmission and crank pulley, therefore regulating the walking drive speed. I can't see how this effectively works on a snowblower to replicate the torque of a traditional friction disc drive type set to one of the lower speed settings.

@muzikmon22672 жыл бұрын
Just goes to show you that dual stage is not always better than single stage. What's more important is having a drive assist.. when you have to push something on your own you are basically doing a workout.. backing up plowing into it.. I'VE SEEN SO MANY VIDEOS OF THE TORO SNOWMASTER 724 AND 824 AND IT DOES JUST AS GOOD AS THE TORO POWERMAX 824 AND 826.. It's a hell of a lot lighter you don't need a reverse. So much easier to push around.. I've seen the snowmaster go through 21 in of snow down by the driveway on KZbin with no problem.. Pretty amazing Toro is always so innovative trying to find new ways to save us money to do the same job.. Absolutely brilliant.. If you don't believe me go type in SNOWMASTER 824 IN A BLIZZARD. YOU WILL BE SHOCKED. And Toro claims that it's 40% faster than the two stage version is pretty much true. I don't know how reliable though self-paced thing but it works fantastic saves tons of time I guess there's not much clogging with a single stage when you have a big opening and nothing in its way to go out the shoot.

@paulgraham63534 жыл бұрын
One thing nobody mentions much critiquing snow blowers is those plastic chutes. I got a Craftsman years ago. It is all metal except from the rotating ring to the deflector on the chute it's plastic. I wouldn't have bought it for that reason but figured they can make plastic and strength they want these days. Day one, right out of the shed, it threw a chunk of ice. That split the deflector as it left the chute. I melted holes with a hot nail and propane torch then stitched it with zip ties. I was able to use it. As I plowed the end of the drive there was a rock size of an egg in the snow bank the plow made. When it threw that, it split the chute itself. I fixed it the same way to finish the job. Sears sent me another chute. I used tin snips and made a ring out of heating duct metal riveting and using JB weld to reinforce the lower edge of the new chute with a ring of metal. I sanded it all down. Covered the whole thing in layers of fiberglass mat and epoxy. I had lots kicking around from fixing a boat. Then I painted the chute and deflector to protect the epoxy from UV. Sears said plastic is fine since it isn't designed to throw rocks. I live on a dirt road but the drive is paved. It won't break now. I like a discharge system that is all metal so it doesn't crack.

Nice practical comparison, under the worst of conditions! Tough decision between the two. The Toro does have some really nice features, minus the plastic trans, but it's longevity concerns me. I have to say though, my Toro CCR 3650 with a plastic carb lasted 16 years before I swapped it out. Overall, Ariens just seems more durable and has a smaller footprint for a crowded garage.

@@ralphfraumeni6190 .........If not 100% electric, the old fashioned carbs need routine maintenance, have not seen EFI in a snowblower[yet], but these would run off of a magneto, like ignition and lights.

When the snow here in CT is like that. I do 1/2 buckets instead of full buckets. May take you longer but you’re not fighting the machine and will have a cleaner path.

My advice is to buy a snowblower that will do every possible storm you might get. Having one that will fail when you need it most the worst decision you can make.

Hey Taryl, do you think you can make a video on why people should go buy machines with metal transmissions and not plastic? I already know why the plastic ones are garbage but it would be interesting if you could do a video on them.

Taryl, have you ever modified the impeller on a 2 stage with rubber to throw farther, or to prevent clogging? Just curious what your opinion is on this. My 8/26 MTD heaves the snow like this, alost never gets clogged, and with heavy wet snow, it throws!!
@Berzirkey4 жыл бұрын
Snow that deep, you can't be taking big bites. Take 2/3 bite or even 1/2 to get better performance and a cleaner path. Yes it might take lil longer but it will do a better job when the motor isn't bogged down with wet snow.

Great descriptions and good test on both. My personal opinion, neither one is worth a crap compared to my 30 year old Honda HS-55 and my 1970s 2 stage 7 hp Ariens in the same kind of snow.

In wet heavy snow I pick the lowest gear and drive right thru it,,no matter how wet. Might have to stop a second to let the blower catch up ,,if allot of snow. But I have never used a snowblower like you guys were. I dont understand what the back and forth chit was??? Dont they have a drive???? I repair these things ,,so I have used almost every snowblower ever made. Never see anyone use a snowblower like you two??? lol
@antagonizerr4 жыл бұрын
The Toro doesn't seem to have a low speed for deep snow so it slams into it and stalls, and the Ariens drive means if it doesn't have solid ground to pull against then it doesn't pull so you have to slam it into the snow. Just bad design on both.

@@healthyamerican ya, this video should be a good lesson to Toro. They should have asked Taryl what kind of snow he gets and what snowblower he wants to test instead of just blindly sending him one. @norge6964 жыл бұрын
bucket width has nothing to do with the engine stalling. its due to the paddles. Shove a single stage blower into a small bank of snow and it will die. Slap a 212cc engine on a 2 stage and it will just eat the snow continually without stalling.
@jusb10664 жыл бұрын
@@norge696 bucket width = more snow. Precisely what people look for because they want to move more snow, people understand less about the rest... Why buy a 96 inch model if the 12-inch model will be better?

A snow blower needs a 10HP motor for wet snow. 8HP will do in a pinch. Anything less causes frustration as depicted in your video.
