I have a Model 24 and it is a bit different as all inputs are active at once but your general guidelines make sense and apply to most large multi-track units. I use marking tape as well. The limitation on the Model 24 is routing. Routing is fixed and sometimes you just have to change plug inputs to different channels like if you want to use the Kronos on separate stereo input channels. Most the time 22 channel inputs work well especially as a mixer only. I will need to rearrange the hobby studio so I can reach the record buttons and see the display, then I can get back to multi-track recording, one of my goals in the next 6 months. Thanks for all the good hints and clues.

Informative video - good info to have. I can apply this to my DP-006. I really wish Tascam would come out with a 16 track version of this unit. Their lineup jumps from 8 tracks (DP-03) to 24 tracks (DP-24) with nothing in between. I can't see ever needing 24 tracks for my personal recording endeavors.

Actually you’re only getting 18 tracks since the last six are set up mainly as stereo tracks (13-24) with the first twelve tracks being mono, but yeah I rarely use or need more than eight tracks. I think Tascam does make a newer 16 track recorder/mixer as well as Zoom, I haven’t tried theirs but I love my little Zoom H2n recorder!

A fellow hardware recording musician. Just using the ZoomR24 24 track instead. The main reason I chose the Zoom is because of the huge level meters on each channel next to the fader. I record the complete orchestrated song all in one take, so those big meters bright LEDs are easy to see with a glance while performing. I also use a 32-channel analog mixer and sub down to my 8 inputs on the Zoom. An oversite of Zoom was no effects sends and returns, so now I have them on the mixer: the same with Tascam I believe?. Plus, the mixer can gain stage a weak signal, like most instruments have, so I don't have to push the Zoom pre-amps very much or not at all. Computerless recording is such a joy! Over 10 years with my hardware recorder and never once has it corrupted and failed, just press record after (what this video is about) and all armed tracks record perfectly. I have almost zero stress recording in my studio, that could never be with a computer. Trusting equipment to do their jobs is a good feeling. I did have a big stress moment when I just spent 3 days programming a synth with sound designs, mixer/effects/levels, sequences, drums, and decided to back up its memory to its SD drive, but I did a load instead of a save and lost it all..... :) LOL wasn't laughing then.

Feel the same way, I’ve played around with Logic Pro on my iMac several times to try and get comfortable with using it but the key word there is “comfortable“ I just find it so much easier to work on the Tascam, it was the same feeling I had with my older Vs-880 which I used for many years but it only had 8 tracks vs 24! Lol. I’ve kicked myself several times for not just springing for the larger VS1680 in the first place Roland’s effects were far superior imho to everyone else’s. Oh well, live and learn lol!

Hey, I had a VS-880 too, with the CD burner (SCSI cable :). Recorded my first mass produced CD on that nice little 8 track. Just a solo piano CD though, not pushing the limits of the VS. I don't have Logic, but taught a friend how to use it. Logic is not for an experienced audio engineer like you. Too much automated garbage that the amateur likes. The rare time I need a DAW, I am still using 20 year old Sonar on a WIN7 computer. Wonderful to compare notes with you! :) @@DigitalDoxology

I just picked up this unit about 2 weeks ago. The manual is not very well written. It would really be nice if one could see the screen in this video. The exact problem the manual has. I got hung up on the stereo tracks cuz it was 🚫 clear how to assign the tracks to the stereo tracks. Also I stumbled on the stereo bus where you don't have to turn none of the faders on which I think is a cool feature.

I usually record on my own so how do you go back after recording one instrument to add the other
@DigitalDoxology

It's easy, select a channel for your instrument (say channel one) set the time at 00:00 press play and record at the same time (red light will come on) play your song on your instrument. When finished press the stop button, then go back to the beginning of the song (rewind buttons to 00:00 again) then select channel 2, and record your second instrument or voice, piano or whatever you want to record and record along with the playback of channel 1. It's really no different then the old style tape recorders or VHS recorders of years ago, except that you can record on top of another recording by using a new track at the same time and do it digitally. I hope that helps... if not - find a nearby music store (Sam Ash or Guitar Center) and ask someone in Audio to help you out with recording on a multitrack device.
