@ROBERT NIX Alternative Rock/Pop Artist Hi Robert, nice to hear from you. Sounds like you've been keeping busy - last time we spoke you were just finishing off an album. I see the DP machine features in a few of your videos. Good idea using KZbin to plug your Spotify channel; you gotta make the most of these platforms :) Good advice re. saving your work. As you say, accidents happen no matter how reliable the system is. All the best for the future. Hopefully things will gradually improve and the live music scene will pick up again.

@@philtipping Phil,it's a real pleasure to see the staying power of your DP-32SD Tutorials, I think I'm now completing the 'next' album(to be released Spring 2022) which will be 8 songs rather than the usual 10 which will make it alot easier for me to stick to my schedule of an album every 2 years-who knows maybe I'll start doing singles like everybody else but I still like the concept of an album.This time around I may use the DP Mastering for the final releases rather than hiring an outside party as I've always done-I'm getting better at making the 'multitrack' recordings sound good in the first place and the mastering tools on this unit at the least make a definite improvement to the 'mixdown' file-probably enough to use as a release so I will see.

I have a new Tascam dp24sd and I am learning to use It's very powerful and simple at the base but some feature is not immediate to understand. Sounds good and It has more than you can imagine, specially in tracks editing cut, paste, move, silence etc...the one thing that I don't love is when I use some drum sample, if It hasn't a very precise cut, some clips or strange click can occours when you paste in sequence in the same track, I solve sequencing on two tracks alternately and bouncing in one track at the end, in this way timing is precise and clips or clicks not occourring

This studio i spent hours trying to add the vocal effect to the track but you cant record the vocal with the effect on. you can only add the effect to the vocal after you have recorded this means vocals have to be recorded without effect only to add the vocal effect after its been recorded ... to complicated not for me not what i thought it would be.......i sent it back money back

@Darren Lee there are ways of recording the effect 'live' - not sure if you watched the tutorials, but it's on video 11 kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3_beqOinM5-esk but agreed it *is* a complex machine - it's a complete studio in a box, so if you haven't got the time to invest in multi-track recording techniques, then maybe the machine isn't for you. Hope you find something more suitable.

@@philtipping Thanks Phil i need something simple where i can add effect to each channel whilst recording i never come across any multitrack tha doesn't allow you to do this basic task .
@philtipping
@philtipping 5 жыл бұрын
@@darrenlee7786 Be interested to know which multitracks you mean, and are they currently available?... also what type of effects are we talking about? There are several types on the dp machine - the ones you can easily add live (without the bounce trick shown in video 11) are the dynamics types - compressor, noise suppressor etc. and these can be added to each of the 8 inputs. The guitar effect can also easily be added during recording - it has 4 sub-effects in a chain, including a delay & chorus, but can only be added to one track at any one time - the full set of effects is summarised here www.tascamforums.com/threads/dp24-32-fx-definitive-summary-of-effects.4162/ So yes this machine is really geared for doing lots of post-processing - overdubbing, bouncing, track editing etc, all within the box without needing a computer, so although it's a slower process, it gives you more freedom as you can change your mind later - if you record effects live, you can't change your mind without re-recording the performance. The newer Model 24 is a much simpler machine aimed at live recording 20-odd channels simultaneously - it allows effects on each channel but I think it only offers a compressor - anything else needs a DAW, so may not be suitable either. Let me know what you end up with.

I can't seem to get any decent bass or midrange with the eq controls, any suggestions ??
@philtipping
@philtipping 2 жыл бұрын
@DONALD SNAITH You could bounce tracks and add more EQ each time, or use an external EQ device which has more EQ options, either in series with the input source when recording, or via the Send/Return loop during bounce or mixdown, but... if you have to resort to this, it does suggest there may be something wrong with your audio source or mic/recording techniques. You can't boost frequencies if they're not there in the first place. The culprit could also be a rogue setting on the DP machine. Did you start your song with a clean slate (e.g. using the reset template as shown in video #2)? Other things to check are if the bass & midrange are missing on the recordings as opposed to the playback. Is your monitoring system/environment capable of handling these frequencies properly? You can confirm this by importing a commercial track from a CD or other high-quality source into a song on the DP machine and playing it back. Again, don't forget to create the test song with all settings reset otherwise you'll be deceiving yourself. Keep us posted if you find anything.

I just got my unit a few days ago and couldn't figure out how to do this. Thanks Is there anyway to add reverb into the monitor mix while I'm recording the vocals?
@philtipping
@philtipping 8 жыл бұрын
Hi +John Ciccantelli and thanks for the feedback. Yes, you can add 'comfort' reverb just for monitoring using the Send controls in the Effects & Mixer sections. The FX won't get recorded, although it's easy to get confused as the Send also acts on the playback after recording! The block diagram is worth studying if you can get your head round it - it answers a lot of questions about the routing. The V-Track box is where the individual tracks are recorded - the 'tape' if you're an old-timer like me! - so you can see it's only the Insert FX which can be recorded (Guitar or Dynamics via Source). The Send FX box at the bottom has no route back to the tracks unless you bounce. If you have any more questions, try the Tascam forum or drop me a line at the email on my www.PhiLiZound.co.uk web site.

The video was specifically for adding reverb during mixdown. If you want reverb while recording tracks, i.e. you're in MultiTrack mode, you need the track(s) assigned and armed for recording, although your method is fine. Was this what you meant? (btw - nice recording space you've got set up - wish I had more room!)
@ciccaj

Well initially I was just trying to get some reverb on my voice in the headphones during recording just because I enjoy listening to my voice more with a little reverb on it while performing. And this I have been able to do however I have not yet been able to get the results that you get during mixdown. I must be missing 1 crucial step. My Mixer screen looks like yours and the Reverb effect screen looks like yours with the Return up to 75 but I still don't hear any reverb when I hit the Play button. Very frustrating. Tascam should be paying you btw for all the help you've been handing out. :-)

@philtipping

@Barry Squatter this video was made to answer a user's question where they were unable to hear reverb during mixdown. This video shows how to hear reverb during both playback and mixdown, and was made as a one-off but, as it says in the description, it has since been superseded by a full tutorial series kzbin.info/aero/PLI2uGjCObnySgNrQyJmlcQpQaUdgBdW6l Re. your questions, there are 3 effect processes which can be applied at different parts of the signal path. There are many ways to route signals through the machine so the limitations depend on this and which ones you want to use. Phil you are certainly the Bob Ross of multitrack recording. 😅 I am still perplexed as to why they have the “master” send knobs whatsoever.. seems redundant with the “return” knob. I’m curious, do you typically just leave the master on 127 maxed out always? Or is there a good use for it?
@philtipping
@philtipping Жыл бұрын
@ThePaulwarner Thank you Paul :) The master level controls the overall amount of signal going *into* the effect, so can change the amount of effect you hear. You're right in that the return level has a similar behaviour, but this controls the level coming *out* of the effect. Having level controls on both sides of a device gives you more control over gain-staging. I don't know what the overhead margin is on the built-in send effect, but there may be a scenario where the input signal overloads it and causes distortion, in which case you would back off the input signal and increase the return level. You can achieve the same thing by altering the levels of each of the send 'contributors' (tracks & inputs), but a 'master' level means you can adjust the combined/sub-mixed send signal without upsetting their relative levels. I usually leave mine fully up, but you won't be able to turn it higher if you need to. If there's only 1 or 2 signals involved, it's just as easy to raise their levels, but if you had a lot, it would be better to back off the master a bit to give you some leeway. Don't forget that send signals can be used for anything you like, not just effects (the term 'eff-send' is misleading). The send signals are just signals tapped off from the main signals, so they are effectively sub-mixes which are independent of the main mix. The PRE & POST options on each tapped-off signal allow the individual relative levels of the main mix to influence (or not) the tapped-off signal levels. On the DP machine, both send-1 and send-2 are wired to their respective eff-send sockets *regardless* of whether you are using the internal send effect (which is only connected to send-1). This means you can use either or both send outputs to drive external things. External effects are the obvious choice, but they could be used for absolutely anything, e.g. driving another set of speakers or a PA system, fold-back signals to a performer's headphones... the 2 sub-mix outputs could go to 2 different performers, each hearing their own mix/blend of signals regardless of the main mix. Thanks for stopping by.

@jomagame hi, for the best quality, transfer the music files by copying them. If you try recording audio directly from a computer, the quality may suffer. You need to check the music files are in a format which is acceptable to the machine (the video on Quality describes the 4 possible formats), then copy them to the AudioDepot folder on the sd-card, either by physically moving the card to the computer, or using a USB link. Once they are on the card, use the Import function on the machine to convert the files into tracks within the current song. This import process and lots of other useful info are all in the step-by-step guide, details here www.philizound.co.uk/freebies/dp24-32/dp24-32.html If you're still stuck after ordering the guide, write to me via email and I'll guide you through the process.

@@jomagame my email is patipping at gmail dot com. If you mean the Tascam machine is saying the song is protected when you try and import the files, then you can un-protect it via Menu, Song ... assuming you are happy to overwrite the current song. Why it would be protected I don't know. Alternatively have you accidentally moved the 'lock' slide switch on the side of the sd-card. This will protect all songs on the card. It's easy to catch the slide-switch when you insert it, so have a look at that.

Thanks Man, Thats INGENIOUS about Creating a RESET File! I wish that The Tascams DP 24 & 32 had Master Reset on the EFFECTS, DYNMAMICS & Especially The MIXER. I personally do Not think those 3 Settings should Stay the same, when I create a new song. Then one also has to Manually RESET first on every of those Tracks & which includes Double Checking The EFFECTS & DYNAMICS settings for each Load just in case. As the result of your video here, I came into my Studio & I Created a RESET File, completely first going thru ALL of those things I mentioned and the Creating The File. So the trick is, as I see it that youre doing Is, Everytime FIRST Before CREATING A NEW SONG FILE, First RELOAD The RESET FILE, and Then since that way Everything goes back to FLAT & OFF, so ti speak, and when I load My New Song File afterwards, everything should be Normal. HOWEVER, Theres on catch, since The TASCAMS read the SD Cards, A Complete RESET FILE Has to be Created on Each & Every New or differerent SD Card. SO, Im going thru Every one of my SD Cards & Creating a Complete RESET File on Each of them. Thanks Phil. Ive just subscribed to you.

Thanks +Jimmy SantAngelo. Yes it seems an oversight from Tascam, especially as the settings are spread over multiple screens, tracks, inputs etc. - such a pain tracking down rogue effects/routings! I first thought the Menu/Initialize function would do the trick, but it resets all the preferences such as Brightness & Auto-off time etc. so is too powerful. Get into the habit of always loading the !Reset song before creating new songs. If you prefix its name with a "!" character, it will always appear at the top of the song list as a reminder to use it. Good point re. having to copy the !Reset file to new/re-formatted sd-cards - I keep a spare copy on the computer for this. When you create the !Reset file for the very first time, make sure there's no audio data present to conserve space, e.g. create a dummy new song first, then zero all the settings, then save it as !Reset... and don't forget to Protect it! You could also use the same idea to prepare variants of !Reset for specific non-flat settings depending on your requirements. Thanks for the sub and good luck with your projects.

Hey Phil, love your videos, and they’ve kept me plugging away with the tascam. I am stuck on a certain issue however; I want to use a track that I’ve already recorded, bounce it to a new track, but using my external guitar pedal board. I can’t seem to figure out how to do this. The furthest I’ve gotten is being able to record a new track, and use the pedals WHILE recording, but I would have thought, it would work just the same with bouncing. Just arm the track for recording, select the track I wish to bounce, tried applying effect send to both of them just to see if either would affect it, and my bounced track is always dry. I can’t figure out what gives. Again just for clarity, and an example, I want to bounce recorded vocals on track 1 onto track 2 with a reverb pedal. I have send effect 2 and master maxed on both track 1 and 2, my pedal board goes from effect send 2, to my board, into input h. Source h also has send effect maxed and on. Source h applied to track 2, bounce and record track 1 to track 2, but 2 still ends up naked with no reverb. I’m not sure what I’m missing. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

@Reece Caldwell Hi Reece, you've got too many sends!! ;) You only to send the signal from the source track, so there's no point turning on the send for track 2 or for any of the inputs. All you want is the signal from track 1 to go to your pedal via the send-2 output, so just turn on send-2 for this track. If you set the Monitor Select to Send-2, you can confirm the signal is getting out to the pedal at a decent level while simply playing the track. If you are using an external effect unit, there's no need to bounce. Bouncing is needed if you want to use the *internal* send effect. You *can* bounce with external effects if you want, but it's a lot simpler to just stay in multi-track mode. If you need detailed steps about setting up the sends or doing a bounce, my step-by-step guide may help www.philizound.co.uk/freebies/dp24-32/dp24-32.html

@@shawn2571 I guess the Zoom had some shortcomings which caused you to sell it? Just shows there's no such thing as the 'perfect' machine :) The internal effects need a good signal level, but if they're still not what you're after, you could use external effects via the Send outputs - quite a few users do this. You still need patience if you want to apply effects to lots of tracks (e.g. repeated bounce passes), but I don't know of any other (modern) machine which has good effects available for every track simultaneously. The Model 24 has a compressor on every track but that's it, and it's also not really an all-in-one 'porta-studio'. Not sure about the Zoom LiveTrak but I guess it's similar. The only other way is to use a DAW, but you'd also need an audio-usb interface with enough inputs... and you're now drifting away from the beauty of computer-less recording!

I have the DP32 and it is so complex to use the internal FX. Far easier to know what sound you want and record it wet, rather than recording dry and bugger around afterwards. Who the heck records an instrument and then decides they did it wrong and should have added reverb? Do it right and record what you hear, not what you decide to hear afterwards.
@philtipping
@philtipping 8 жыл бұрын
That's good advice - you were forced to do this in the old tape days when every bounce added more hiss etc... on the other hand, once you commit an FX there's no going back so it takes a confident person to do it :) There's a summary of DP24/32 effects here (www.tascamforums.com/threads/dp24-32-fx-definitive-summary-of-effects.4162/) if it's any help.

@philtipping 4 жыл бұрын
@Jeff Swisher Hi Jeff, there is only one reverb effect but you can send any combination of inputs and/or tracks to it. You can also control how much signal from each one goes to the effect via the Send Level knobs. The display at top right of the mixer screen shows which input/track will be affected by the knobs, so you just select each one in turn (press Select for tracks, press Source for inputs), then twiddle the knobs. The mixer screen does not have to be open, although it's useful to confirm you've selected the correct item before touching anything :)

Hi Phil, thanks for all the great informative videos! I just bought a Tascam DP32 SD and was wondering how to adjust and set the reverb for the individual mono (and stereo tracks) while both recording and during playback? On my old DP03 SD, there was a physical knob for each of the 8 tracks which made it very simple but I'm confused how to do it on the DP32 SD. Many thanks. Jeff
@philtipping
@philtipping 7 жыл бұрын
+SAR thanks for the feedback Jeff. If you check out the tutorial videos kzbin.info/aero/PLI2uGjCObnySgNrQyJmlcQpQaUdgBdW6l, you'll see the reverb effect is only available in the Send effect. There's a written summary of all effects here www.tascamforums.com/threads/dp24-32-fx-definitive-summary-of-effects.4162/ Adding a Send effect during playback is fairly easy - you set the Send-1 level for each track as reqd, the single Master-Send-1 level, and the single Reverb return level - it's all in tutorial no. 5. The effect can also be added to signals being monitored while they are being recorded... but the reverb itself will not be recorded, i.e. it's a 'comfort' reverb. It's not easy to record the Reverb effect 'live' as you need to create a path from the internal effect output back to the tracks. One way is to connect a physical cable from the Send output to a spare input but you need to be careful you don't get a feedback loop. The other way is to use the Bounce function, which makes an internal connection from the 'mix' output back to a spare track for recording. In this case, you would add reverb using the Send effect just as with playback, but this time the result will be recorded - see video no. 9. There is also a 'delay' effect in the Track Insert (Guitar) effect, so this may be a suitable alternative - it can be placed in the record path or the playback path so you can record it live without having to bounce.
@sar3318
@sar3318 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Phil, I assume the only way to record vocals live with reverb added then would be to use a separate vocal processor between the mic and the DP32 SD inputs? I'm just a little surprised that this $550 recorder doesn't even have the same basic record/playback reverb ability that Tascam's cheaper 6 and 8 track recorders have. You have great, informative and in-depth videos! Thanks. Jeff R.
@philtipping
@philtipping 7 жыл бұрын
Jeff, are you sure you could add reverb to a 'live' recording on the DP-03? The block diagram looks very similar to the dp24/32 so appears to have the same 'restrictions' with the Send effect, i.e. you can add and hear reverb while you are recording, but the reverb is not actually recorded. I know the layout is different on the dp03 but I think those knobs are just the individual Send levels which you set via the mixer screen on the dp24/32. It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking the reverb has been recorded as when you play tracks back, the send effect is still in operation, so you'll hear the reverbs re-added to the dry recordings. You should be able to prove this by turning off the reverb during playback. Update: There is a good reason why you wouldn't want to record reverb live... once you add it, you cannot remove it. Normally you would add reverb to the monitored signal to allow the performer to perform better (a 'comfort' reverb). This would be a 'rough' setting, or whatever the performer needs. Afterwards you would either bounce or mixdown and add the correct amount of reverb (maybe with EQ) at that point. Unlike the live situation, it's very easy to add the reverb (Send effect) at this stage in the process, and you can easily undo it and try a different setting. One other trick with bouncing is to remove the original signal from the bounce so the new track just holds the reverb signal. This way you can easily balance the amount of original and reverb signals by just moving faders when you come to mix down.

Makes good sense Phil. Can you please tell me how to actually use the reverb as a "comfort effect" (non recorded) on the DP32 SD? That is where I'm having problems. Thank you. Jeff R.

+CN REEDER yes probably... you can either transfer the individual track files and mix/master/burn them on the computer, or you can mix/master them on the dp32sd and transfer just the final master file for burning. The two transfer methods are different, so check out the manual or the tutorial videos first. It is possible to avoid a computer by using a stand-alone CD burner, although you'd have to use an audio connection as there are no digital outputs on the dp32sd.

How can i record the 32 channels with diferent sound if it is possible? thank yuo, phil
@philtipping
@philtipping 7 жыл бұрын
+ELVIPANOMENTAO - normally when you record onto a stereo track, both the left & right sides are overwritten regardless of how the signals are routed, so the only way I know is to fool the system by using the Import function. This lets you import a mono wave file into the left or right halves of a stereo track without destroying the other side. You can either use files copied into the AudioDepot folder from a computer, or create your own using the Export function. I think this is mentioned in one of the tutorial videos (8D or 8F?) about import/export - kzbin.info/aero/PLI2uGjCObnySgNrQyJmlcQpQaUdgBdW6l - Note that the left & right sides will still share the common fader and EQ controls when you playback the stereo track, so it may not be quite as useful as you'd like. The term '32' in 'dp-32' can be misleading - there are only 20 track faders so there are really only 20 completely separate tracks; 12 of them can be either mono or stereo but the total is still 20.

@philtipping
@philtipping 7 жыл бұрын
+Jamel Jessamy - don't know what special requirements you need for hip hop, but the machine is capable of CD-quality recording. Haven't tried dynamic mics personally but studio condenser mics with phantom power give excellent clarity, although this again depends on your requirements/expectations. It won't be as good as a 4-figure mic and pre-amp combination, but then you wouldn't expect it to... and is your monitoring system good enough to hear the difference anyway? From a functional point of view, there are compressors and noise suppressors for the vocal input if you want to use them before recording. There's a couple of send outputs and an internal effect for comfort reverb if you need it... or you can add effects afterwards. There are some youtube examples of tracks made with these DP machines if you search around, although they're the finished result and not a specific tutorial on recording vocals. Maybe ask on the Tascam forum for more practical advice on your specific needs. Good luck.

@philtipping6948
@philtipping6948 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, best bet is to create a new song first so that it does not contain any audio data. Then go through all FX & mixer settings for all tracks and inputs, setting all parameters to off or zero as reqd. Then save this song and name it as !Reset. If you also protect it, you won't accidentally overwrite it. From now on, always load the !Reset song before you create a new song to guarantee all FX & routing is how you want it.

@philtipping
@philtipping 5 жыл бұрын
@Echo4nineteen it can record up to 8 signals simultaneously, but you can overdub many more... so it depends how you plan to record them. More live signals could be handled using an external mixer, but you'll have to commit to pre-mixing some of them before they reach the DP machine. If you really want to record more than 8 signals onto separate tracks simultaneously, you'd be better off with a machine with more inputs, such as the Tascam Model 16 or Model 32, or the Zoom LiveTrak range. Note these don't have a full set of 'studio' functions like the DP machines, so you'd have to use a DAW for these... in which case, it may be worth considering recording direct to a computer in the first place, e.g. using a audio-to-USB interface with sufficient inputs for your needs.

Yes I know. It kinda doesn't make sense. You should be able to do it in mix down mode because you have to record your mix down to make a master. @philtipping
@philtipping 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for interest +Dickie Dee. There's no problem adding either Insert or Send FX during the mixdown phase, and there's no harm in stopping at that point - the mixdown track you've created is still called a 'master' track so you can copy it out to a computer and add external mastering or burn a CD etc. It's just that you can't use these same FX when you go from this 'mixdown' stage to 'master'; you only have EQ, COMP & NORM. You can see this on the mixer block diagram in the manual; there's no internal route from the MASTER TRACK (near upper-right) to any of the Insert/Send FX blocks.

Hi +Neil Swan, well it's a bit subjective and depends how much of it you're planning to use. My main requirement was for multi-track recording on location without getting bogged down with computers, so it fits the bill perfectly. If you're wanting to mix & master on it, it does the job and has a selection of FX to choose from, but not sure how the quality of the FX and mastering compares to what you're after. There are restrictions in the no. of FX which can be used simultaneously - I posted a 'definitive summary' on the Tascam forum www.tascamforums.com If you've got the latest firmware and a good quality sd-card, it's capable of glitch-free recording and editing. I've found it a very solid machine, both mechanically and functionally. The ergonomics is fairly good, with real trim controls on the 8 inputs, and individual track faders for playback. A lot of other functions are via screen menus so this may be an issue for you. EQ and send levels have real knobs on the front panel, although they only control the currently selected input or track so there are compromises if you're used to a hardware mixer with dedicated controls for everything. It can only record 8 tracks simultaneously, but can handle 24bit, 48KHz formats so quality is plenty good enough (for me). The sd-card can be accessed via USB or you can unplug it and connect direct to a computer. It takes a while to convert recorded tracks into a wave file suitable for playing/processing on a computer, but it means you can mix/master recordings on a DAW. This 'export' process can be quite an area of confusion though if you take a look at the forum. I would ask the same question there as there are quite a few users who will have their own good/bad points. If you go for one, I would recommend paying the extra for the dp32, as the stereo tracks can be configured as either mono or stereo, as opposed to the dp24 where the mono & stereo tracks are fixed. Note that the term 'track' is a bit misleading. They count a stereo track as 2, and if you configure one as mono, you lose the other mono in the pair, so you don't actually get 32 individual mono tracks. Any other questions, please use my email as shown on the philizound.co.uk web site. Good luck.
