@@philtipping Thank you very much for the kind words too Phil ! I'm a little bit interested in astronomy, although I'm not a scientist. But I think God has created a wonderful universe to discover. And about your request for a collaboration, I'm honored. I don't have much time, (I'm not a professionnal musician). Nowadays, I work on a project for a video soundtrack, and I have to deal with big problems on my AW16 G, which cause me some delays.... But why not in the future ?

Hi Phil, Just wanted to add my two bits to the plethora of justly positive comments. I'm am very grateful for the work you've put in here and the time you have taken to help luddites such as myself. I finally am able to have the unit open and running as you make your excellent pathway through this machine. Now it all makes perfect sense and I am actually making progress! Thanks again!

Thank you ! Well, I am only on video 3 but I cannot fathom how I'd have figured all this out alone. I followed along and I succeeded in getting a signal from my synth to the headphones and I can explain the path the signal is taking. The tutorials seemed a bit overly detailed at first but I'm coming to understand why. It's complex machine with lots of subtleties. I look forward to the remaining tutorials. At this point I'm not even thinking about recording anything. Feeling confident time spent getting a better technical understanding of the device will ultimately serve me well. Using the DP24 SD will be fun.

Dude, you are a God-send. I have been going nuts trying to figure this stuff out - I have been designated as our Bands "Producer" since my wife and I have recently invested heavily in to a new state of the art Recording Studio in our home and I am lost. As a friend of mine once adamently complained - he could not spell worth a hoot - when I (and others) told him "Look it up in the Dictionary" he would get arather upset stating a damn dictionary doesn't do squat if you don't know how to spell the damn word!. The same thing re, All of those twidgets and gadgets under mixer, EQ, etc on the DP 32SD don't do a damn thing if you have no clue what they mean and how to use them. In other words, going and adjusting things blindly do nothing but mess everything up. So, THANK YOU, I have learned more from you in ten minutes than I have in ten weeks. The Users Manual for this Unit is Empty of detailed explanations. My Lead Vocalist complains how her voice is flat and muffled sounding and I have no idea how to clear it up and make it brighter. Now, I know thanks to you. Please keep up the very in-depth guide you provide - your are a saint.

Thanks Phil…. I am impressed with your signal-path diagram description and narrative … I am a RTFM guy lol, but have never before looked at these signal path diagrams. I am a musician not an engineer and even though I am familiar with the capabilities of this portastudio and no stranger to recording studio logistics, I found your video to be an amazing resource and I thank you. TASCAM or TEAC certainly should be paying you to highlight their products. Finally I want to mention that I have only had my DP24 for a week, but searched carefully over a several week span for the older model before making my purchase, because I needed the midi implementation and interface. It’s mind boggling to me that TASCAM removed that feature and I use it to sync my drum machine to allow ongoing updates to my drum programming during the latter stages of production; to sync with my old ADAT and BRC which is a nice luxury to have; and finally to have the option of using a hardware sequencer for automated mix moves and adjusting keyboard patches before committing to recorded tracks…. I can understand TASCAM discontinuing the CD TRAY although I like having it, but discontinuing the MIDI??? What giant brain thought THAT was a good idea? It prevented me from buying the new model and I just wanted to comment on that!
@philtipping
@philtipping 8 ай бұрын
@chrisrogers9621 thanks for the kind words. You're not alone with the MIDI issue, although there are work rounds for sync (but not automation) as shown in video 13, so it's not quite the show-stopper it's made out to be. You can always write to Tascam; the more requests they get, the more chance they will have a change of heart... although it would be quite a miracle as they seem to have put all their resources into the Model series, which I still maintain are not 'portable studios' as they still need a computer to do a lot of studio-related operations! You can give me a mention while you're at it :) - there's been zero contact from them over all these years. Thanks for stopping by.

@Joe Palooka thank you Joe. Well the machine does have a lot of functions - a whole studio, hence the 'porta-studio' name ;) so there will be a learning curve to get to grips with them all. But you don't need to dive in at the deep end; just start slow and gradually build up your skill as & when you need more functions. The videos are in this order for that reason; you start using it as a simple mixer and then move on. If you want a quicker way of getting off the ground, the Step-by-Step guide may be more useful at first. It lists all the steps to do various tasks without getting bogged down with the explanations - you can revisit those as & when you're ready. Full details including a contents list and sample pages are here: www.philizound.co.uk/freebies/dp24-32/dp24-32.html Good luck :)

Hi, Phil. Great tutorials. I'm about to buy this Tascam. I have a question since I'm not that good at english (maybe you've already explained this in your videos) but if I click the phantom power button, A-D, does every input become powered by +48V or can I choose only two of the four inputs? Since I'm only going to use 2 condenser mics as overhead to my drums, that requires phantom power. Thanks.
@philtipping
@philtipping 7 жыл бұрын
+SimonAspsundDrums Hi Simon, thanks for the feedback. In an ideal world every input would have a separate on/off switch, but on these dp machines, there are only 2 buttons so the phantom power is in 2 banks of 4, i.e. there's an on/off button for inputs A-D, and another button for inputs E-H. You can have A-D all switched on, and E-H all switched off, but you cannot have say, A & B on, with C & D off. Many people say this is not a problem with modern mics as any mic which doesn't need phantom power will not be harmed if the power is present... but I try and play it safe where possible and keep phantom and non-phantom mics on separate banks. Note that phantom power only appears on the XLR sockets, not the 1/4" jacks.
@SimonAspsund
@SimonAspsund 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the answer! Alright, maybe it will not be a problem then. Yes I will only use the XLR inputs. The mics I've bought are modern. 3 Sennheiser e604, 1 Audix i5, 1 Shure Beta52A (and 2 OH's). Didn't know you can "phantom power" dynamic mics without damaging them. I understand that your recommendation is to avoid that if possible but as you said and I also googled a little, it would not be a problem. Thanks again.

@philtipping
@philtipping 6 жыл бұрын
+James West thanks for the feedback James. I don't have any measuring gear for this level of detail. They handle up to 24 bit 48KHz and sound perfect for my ears but that's a subjective opinion and also depends on what gear (and room/environment) you are using to listen to them. There are lots of factors, e.g. see section 1 in www.mit.edu/~klund/A2Dtesting.pdf or www.clir.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/6/AD-Converters-Pohlmann.pdf Try asking on the Tascam forum; there may be people there who know which chips are used or can compare them with high-end gear.

For myself, I cannot think of a single real-life situation where I would send the inputs directly to the stereo bus and fiddle with levels, EQ, and effects directly in the little screen. And I am equally puzzled why Tascam would even wire this functionality into the device at all. However, learning about it has been very instructive for me, and I agree with Phil that walking through the diagram starting with this simplest application is mandatory to understand where the signal goes in more advanced situations.
@philtipping
@philtipping 4 жыл бұрын
@Les Wright thanks for stopping by, Les. Well it does depend on your particular usage, so yes you may never need the functionality, but it's good to have it if the need arises. The more you use the machine, the more uses come to mind. e.g. some mixing requirements don't need continuous adjustments so running it in this 'simple' live mixer mode is perfectly adequate. It also frees up the tracks so you could play a mix of pre-recorded tracks at the same time. Another example is if you want to mix or bounce all the tracks you have, but still want to add more live signals to the mix. Running signals straight through also helps to track down routing problems. It bypasses the sd-card and track circuitry, so it's the simplest way of checking your signal sources and monitoring system.

@philtipping
@philtipping 6 жыл бұрын
As I said, if you want a portastudio all-in-one box, you've only got a choice of Tascam or Zoom. If the Tascam is too confusing, try Zoom. If that's no good, then you're stuck unless you buy second hand. There's no point comparing a Tascam portastudio with a Yamaha mixer as they are made for different purposes. You need to decide what sort of machine you want (mixer or portastudio), and then compare products from the vendors who make them.

Oh what a dork I am! Why didn't I start with these videos? I was one of those foolhardy folk who jumped into the deep end of the pool without a clue (or a life raft). Question; when using a microphone should I automatically use phantom power? I tried recording an acoustic guitar track and it sounded rather feeble in relation to direct tracks.
@philtipping
@philtipping 3 ай бұрын
@posteraddict Hi Greg, just seen this *after* sending the email, so thanks again for the donation, and I'll reply to your email later. Phantom power depends on the type of microphone. You need to check the user manual (look up the make & model number on the internet if you don't have one). If the mic requires phantom power, then absolutely you need to turn it on otherwise you won't hear anything. Some mics have the option of an internal battery to provide phantom power for convenience. If the mic does *not* require it, then leave it off; phantom power will not boost the sound and may even damage the mic in some circumstances. Most modern mics are tolerant to this, but I would always turn it off for piece of mind.

Hey Phil, I'm thinking about getting the Tascam DP-24SD and I have been searching for a DVD tutorial for this model but I've only found one for the 2488 NEO. Do you know if there is one available for the DP24SD ??? And will the DVD for the 2488NEO be good enough?
@philtipping
@philtipping 3 жыл бұрын
@James Lanclos Hi James, there are a few tutorials for the DP24/32. I'm not sure how close the NEO is to say if they're suitable. I only know of 2 DVDs for the DP24/32. One is by David Wills - I've only seen part of one but he's had good reviews. The other one is mine - shameless plug :) which is basically all my KZbin videos squashed into a single mp4 file so it fits onto a single DVD (runtime 5 hours or so). The video has a few corrections and clarifications which didn't make it onto the KZbin version. It also has a title for each section along the footer so it's easy to locate/scroll to any part of the whole series. There's an index here www.philizound.co.uk/freebies/dp24-32/Tutorial-Index-131.pdf Full details are here www.philizound.co.uk/freebies/dp24-32/dp24-32.html#offline-tutorial I also have a 114-page PDF step-by-step guide here www.philizound.co.uk/freebies/dp24-32/dp24-32.html which will get you off the round very quickly without getting bogged down with the details. The link has a downloadable index and sample pages so you can see what it covers. Good luck and hope you find something suitable. Phil.

Great information. Is there a noticeable difference in sound quality when recording in 16 bit or 24 bit? Thank you.
@philtipping
@philtipping Жыл бұрын
@AmbientSound7 Depends what you define as 'noticeable' :) I would say no, but there are many views about this and other pros & cons to consider, so best to compare them yourself. The advice I had was to use the highest settings if you plan to do a lot of processing - like having a high-resolution picture for editing. Back then, the end result was a CD which is 'only' 16-bit anyway. 24-bit gives you more headroom so you can keep recording levels well away from the red without worrying about the noise floor... but the conversion from 24-bit to 16-bit depends on how good the conversion process is. Thanks for stopping by.

@@philtipping Thank you for this information. I am using a keyboard synth with a Tascam Dp008EX which only has 16 bit. MY only reason for considering the DP 24 would be for the 24 bit. Is it worth it? Or should I just be careful with my DP008 and stay away from the "Red"? Thank you so much!🙂

The answer is no unfortunately, but you can fairly easily export individual tracks to a DAW, reverse them there, then import them back into the song (or any other song). Same applies if you wanted to do pitch-shifting or auto-tune etc. As long as you use the Export & Import functions from the Menu, AudioDepot screen, everything will remain in perfect sync. Thanks for stopping by.

Phil, when I’m recording my MPC into the Tascam, I connect the main outs from the MPC to a couple of the inputs on the Tascam. Am I supposed to leave the trim knobs all the way left in the line position or does it matter? Because when I start to turn the pot clockwise the signal will get louder as I move it towards the mic position.
@philtipping
@philtipping 2 ай бұрын
@leogolive Hi Leo, the trim control allows you to compensate for devices with different output levels. If you are using 1/4" jack plugs for the input connections (as opposed to 3-pin XLR), the trim knob is at 'unity gain' at approx the 1 o'clock position. This means the pre-amp acts as an attenuator when the knob is to the left of this position, and as an amplifier when the knob is to the right. My recommendation is to set the trim at the unity gain position, and adjust the output level from the MPC so you get a good recording level on the Tascam meters; typically about -12 dB, although there are different opinions on this value :) The noise floor is very low with these digital systems, so recording at low levels is not a problem like it used to be with analogue tape recorders. It's even better if you create your songs using 24-bit depth, as opposed to the default 16-bit. The crucial thing is to avoid the overload lights above the trim controls and on the home screen going into the red at any time. Only turn the trim away from this unity gain position if you cannot get a good level by adjusting the MPC, or if you are using a device with no output level control. Note this unity gain position does *not* apply if you are using XLR connectors. These are for lower-level mic signals so the pre-amp is always amplifying to some degree. Hope that helps. Looking forwards to the MPC3 upgrade :) I signed up for the beta version a few weeks ago but nothing's appeared yet.

@Talentocubano thanks for the feedback. Yes you can sync midi. It's easy with the earlier dp24/32 models which have a CD drive, as they have MIDI sync built in. The later dp24sd/dp32sd models do not have CD or MIDI, but you can still do it with an external MIDI sync box just as it was done with analogue tape machines - video 13 kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6GkiHSiprOnjdE shows one such device.

This is my third time through the videos… I finally have it set up in a small bedroom with my drum kit and k2700, and vocal mics. The question is… how do I turn down the monitor speakers and run headsets to the engineer (me) and to the vocalist at the same time? Am I forced to put the singer in another room and get some sort of headphone device to change the levels to the headphones? It’s hard being new and clueless.
@philtipping
@philtipping Жыл бұрын
@Mark Nichols You're right in that you'll probably need an external device to do this, but read on for more options. There are 2 issues here; feedback from monitor speakers when using mics and how to drive headphones, so the options depend on your exact requirements. As you've found, there's no way within the machine to separate the headphone output at the front from the monitor sockets at the back; the levels are both controlled by the monitor level knob, so you need some other way of turning off the speakers to avoid feedback. Some speakers have a built-in level control, although this is usually at the back so is difficult to access. You could simply turn off the power to the speakers, but this can also be inconvenient, and turning things on & off probably isn't a good idea anyway. Another option is to feed the monitor speakers from the send outputs and control their levels from the Master Send knob(s). You can also feed headphones from the monitor sockets and/or the send outputs, the latter being a more typical scenario for sending 'foldback' to a performer. If you're not using the internal send effect, you can use send-1 and/or send-2, otherwise you can just use send-2. Using the sends allows you to send up to 2 different mixes to your band members, which can be useful in some cases. The signals from the monitor and send sockets are line-level so you'll need a headphone amp. If you need multiple headphones, you can use a headphone splitter. These usually have a level control for each output, so although the signal would be the same, the levels can be varied independently. An external switch/monitor device should be able to address one or both of the above issues. There are several types out there, but they vary a lot in price and features, e.g. Mackie Big Knob vs Behringer. I don't use one so can't advise, but the forums should be able to help if you need recommendations. Good luck, and thanks for stopping by.

@philtipping
@philtipping 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks +mountainchatter 0. One mono lead may work - some synths can detect if you've only plugged in one output lead so they'll automatically merge left & right outputs into mono. On my gear, it's the left socket, but not sure if it's a universal standard. It should be marked on the socket, e.g. left/mono. If it doesn't do this, or you really want to capture stereo from the synth, then you'll need 2 leads and 2 inputs on the dp32. If you Assign the 2 inputs to the left & right halves of a stereo track it will record in stereo. I won't get round to recording for a few videos yet, but there's always the forum at www.tascamforums.com if you get stuck. Best of luck.

@philtipping 7 жыл бұрын
+Rob Campbell - R. Camizzi the preroll function is part of the punch-in system. As far as I'm aware this is for re-recording over sections of an existing recording to correct mistakes. You may be able to get it to work for recording a whole track (which I presume is what you are trying to do) but I've never used punch-in so cannot advise. If there are mistakes in a recording, I either re-record the whole thing again or fix it later by editing, either on the machine or on a DAW. Try asking in the Tascam forum. By the way, please don't post the same question on more than one of these tutorial videos as it means I have to repeat the answer.

@philtipping 5 жыл бұрын
@Häxan Jonsson thank you for your support. I have no experience of the Model 24/16, but my (maybe inaccurate!) understanding is that it's definitely *not* a complete studio-in-a-box so should not be considered as an 'upgrade' to the portastudio (dp24/32) machines. It's aimed more at recording multiple sources and basic mixing, so any other processing & editing has to be done in a DAW. If computers are your thing, this is easy to do as the USB link can transfer all the tracks and/or a stereo mix concurrently in either direction, so you could for example transfer all recordings to a DAW and edit & mix them there. Or you could just edit/process them on the DAW, then transfer them back to the Model 16/24 and mix them using the faders for a 'hands-on' mixdown. There are a lot more inputs than the dp models for concurrent recording, although there is no input/track assignment system, so you have to physically move cables if you want to change tracks for overdubs. Each channel has its own set of eq knobs and one effect knob (compressor), so this is an advantage compared to the dp machines. Additional effects can be applied during mixdown, although I believe these are global effects and not on a track-by-track basis. So bottom line (afaik) is: DP 24/32 for doing everything in the machine, or if you're happy with 8 inputs and the knob/fx limitations... and price! Model 24/16 for recording lots of inputs and basic mixing, or if you don't mind using a computer/DAW for additional processing.

+ICG that's correct, only the trim controls affect the recording level (plus the input EQ and dynamics FX). The track faders only control the output from the track; this includes the level you hear when monitoring the recording. The videos show how the various level controls work.

Phil Tipping Thank you very much for replying. I guess I will opt for the analog Behringer Xenyx UFX1604. It is a more "hands on control", which I prefer. And it allows me to record as well. However ... It does the same crap as this one, recording everything PRE settings ... (And it is very old, which doesn't make me happy. Released in 2011 haha). It's just stupid, I really don't understand why manufacturers do this = ( I just want to play my instruments through the mixer, and then record on individual tracks what I'm hearing through the output. Be headphones or monitors. Why is this SO difficult? = (
@philtipping
@philtipping 6 жыл бұрын
+ICG Well don't be too hasty - this machine is very flexible once you understand the signal flow. If you follow the tutorials, you'll see the 'advanced mixer' setup, where the track faders *do* control what you hear in the monitors/headphones, although they still don't control the recording levels (but why is this an issue?). You can also add effects (dynamics) to each of the 8 inputs so these can be heard live as well as being recorded. The guitar insert effect can also be recorded as you play live, although it can only be applied to one track at any one time. The send effect can be applied to any/all tracks and/or inputs - it's only one effect but you can alter how much is applied to each track/input. The only snag is that this built-in send effect is not designed to be recorded live - there are a couple of ways to do it, but it's not so straightforward so normally you'd use it for monitoring purposes, then apply it during a bounce or mixdown later and record the effect then. If you just want to use the machine as a mixer where the track faders control each track and also record the stereo result live, then switch it into bounce mode - video 11 shows an example of this.
@billwhite9703
@billwhite9703 6 жыл бұрын
I'll put it simply ICG, the trim controls the INPUT level, i.e., what's recorded, i.e., the INPUT recording level. You plug in a microphone or instrument, sing or play and set the trim so that the level on the screen is around 0dB, and wearing good headphones, say Sennheiser HD 25 Mkll's, raise the fader until you're happy with the level of the output. Some sources will distort periodically if no compression is applied, so you might choose to drop the trim level or to apply compression to avoid peaks. To repeat myself even more simply, these machines are absolutely logical and remarkably simple once you take the time to learn what they do, so, the faders are for listening and the trim is for recording, but only until mixdown/mastering, when the fader of each individual or stereo channel controls the level on the master recording.

Thanks for the great explanation- I'm thinking about buying this, I used to have the MKiii like 20 years ago. I use Cubase pro 9 now, but I'm tempted to get the dp34sd to record more tracks, with a touch of nostalgia. Those button clicks kill me a bit though... any thoughts? The point of zero latency is attractive, I'm thinking of recording on this and transferring into Cubase... I'm onto your next video now, but any advice based on your experience with the dp32sd will be much appreciated.. also, what do you think of its preamps?
@philtipping
@philtipping 7 жыл бұрын
+Danny Lundmark thanks for the feedback. The buttons do make a mechanical click although I think the camera mic has exaggerated them a bit. Major plus point (for me) is it avoids all the complications & diversions of a personal computer... and you'd still need an audio interface anyway if you want to record more than one stereo track at a time. The two send outputs provide foldback for overdubs. This was enough justification for me as I transfer the wave files to my main system for processing & mixing. Having the built-in effects and processing options turned out to be more useful than I thought for previewing location recordings. Preamps are a subjective matter - they seem quiet enough for me, but I also have an 8-way external preamp box for really critical mic work. Have not got round to doing a proper A-B comparison so maybe this is unnecessary. There are limitations re. the built-in effects, but this is not a show-stopper for me. The bounce system can be used to apply additional effects, although I accept this is not quite the same as having multiple effects available in a single pass. Might be worth asking on the Tascam forum for more opinions before committing.

@philtipping
@philtipping 5 жыл бұрын
@David Murray they are exactly the same, quality-wise. The only functional differences (as far as I know) are:- 1. the total track count. 2. the option to configure any/all of the stereo tracks to mono on the dp32sd. Having more tracks is useful for many reasons - overdubs, retakes, processing/bouncing, comparing mixes etc. My view is that you can never have 'too many tracks' :) ...but obviously this depends on your intended use for the machine. The ability to switch stereo tracks to mono does not give you 'more' tracks (one stereo track becomes one mono track), but it does mean you can increase the total no. of mono tracks for ease of processing. Stereo tracks are useful for recording stereo (synths, keyboards, stereo mic pairs etc), or bouncing/mixing to stereo, but monos are useful for mono sources and signals which you can pan across the stereo field later when mixing or playing back, so again, it depends on your requirements. Hope that helps.

Okay Phil, I've been using my DP32SD and have never used the mixer on the A-H inputs as a basic mixer. I'm trying to figure out why would I do this? I can only see two reasons. 1. Sometimes the trim doesn't cut or boost the input signal enough based on the levels I'm getting from the amps, drums, or vocal mics etc. So the extra bit of level control could be helpful. 2. Adding high/low-pass EQ early in the chain and save time later. Other than that I'm stumped. You spent quite a bit of time covering the basic mixer in your 3A/B videos, so I must be missing something important. Please help me.
@philtipping
@philtipping 7 жыл бұрын
Hi +mrgscales. The main reason for describing the mixer features first were to avoid getting sidetracked with recording and playing back. The signal paths from inputs A-H up to the assign switch are the same whether you're recording or mixing, and the paths for the inputs *after* the assign switch are almost identical with the paths from the tracks when you're monitoring a recording, or playing it back. So all the items in those paths, such as levels, phase, EQ, insert effects, send system etc. are useful whether or not you are recording. But the advantage of starting with a live mixer scenario means you can hear the results immediately, and hopefully get to grips with these features before moving on. After this, recording & playback should be easier to understand as we can concentrate just on those topics without complicating the picture with routing, effects, EQ etc. as you already know how to do this. The other reason for describing its use as a mixer is because it's possibly an overlooked feature; here's just a few practical examples:- - mix signals from a live band into a PA system. - mix signals for personal practice, say a vocal mic and an electric guitar or keyboards. - mix signals for recording directly into the stereo inputs on a computer. - feed up to 2 different mixes of signals into headphones for monitoring purposes in the above scenarios. - use effects & EQ on any of the above scenarios.
@mrgscales
@mrgscales 7 жыл бұрын
That helps a lot. So at the input level I can use a one dynamic effect per input and do some basic hi-pass, lo-pass for vocs, guitar, kick, hhat etc? The audio will record as such? When I'm ready to do further mixing/mixdown I can do additional fine tuning of eq per track, but use only one type of send or guitar effect for the final mix? So if I added reverb on vocals. that would be my only send effect option for the remainder of the tracks?
@philtipping
@philtipping 7 жыл бұрын
+mrgscales that's correct. You could have different *levels* of send effect for each track/input but it would still only be the one effect type for that bounce/mixdown. If you need more effects (insert or send), the only way is to do repeated bounces with different effects for each bounce. Note this is *bounce* as opposed to *mixdown* - you can't easily go back and add more effects with mixdown.
@mrgscales
@mrgscales 7 жыл бұрын
The limitation of 1 track level send effect for the all 24/32 is pretty disappointing but I guess there is only so much they can squeeze into a small affordable package. So that's fine for quick or simple projects. The larger more important projects, should be exported anyway.

Hello sir... wow, thanks so much for your very good explained tutorial... sorry for my english... is that bounce the function to use if I want to load to the sd card an instrumenal mp3 and then play in one channel, say channel 2, and then connect a microphone to channel 2 and record a singer while playing the instrumental track on channel 2 back to his headphones? Is that possible? so he will hear the preloaded instrumental mp3 on, let's say channel 2, on his headphones out from this unit and then I will get his voice into channel 1 with a shure microphone and have it recorded into that track... is that possible? or what type of unit can I get to do that? thanks you!
@philtipping
@philtipping 3 жыл бұрын
@MiQuel KZbin thanks for the feedback MiQuel. You don't need bounce to do what you want. This is just basic overdubbing, which these DP machines do very easily. First thing to do though is to convert your backing track into a wave file before transferring it to the sd-card. The machine does not understand mp3 files. Once the backing track is imported into your song, that track (or any other tracks) can be played while you are recording onto other tracks. Your singer can listen to the backing track (and their own voice) on the monitor headphones so they can sing in time to the track. You'll end up with a separate track containing just the singer. You can then do further overdubbing to add harmonies or other instruments if you like. When you've finished recording all your tracks, you can then mixdown while adding effects. Some effects can only be added to one track at a time, so this is where bouncing can be used before doing our final mix. The machine is capable of doing many things, so it can seem complicated at first. If you go through this whole tutorial, you'll have a better understanding of the signal flow and be able to configure it to do whatever you want. For example you will see how it's possible to add reverb to the singers voice which they will hear in their heaphones. This reverb won't be recorded - it's just to help the singer's performance, but you can then add exactly the right amount of reverb later when bouncing or mixing. Doing it this way means you can change your mind about how much reverb to add (or even use a different effect such as chorus) without having to re-record the singer. Phil, can you tell me how to simply move a track, like track 3 to track 19/20, or is this not possible.
@philtipping
@philtipping 7 жыл бұрын
Hi +Steve Sweetwater. If you really mean moving from a mono track to a stereo track, you can either bounce, which needs a real-time recording pass (video 9), or use the quick export/import trick (video 8F), e.g. export the mono track[3], import it to stereo left [19], export the mono[3] again (as it's disappeared from AudioDepot due to previous import), import to stereo right [20]. You've now got a mono signal in the middle of the stereo field. You can avoid waiting for each export by cloning the mono track[3] to a spare mono track[say 4] first (which is instant), then exporting both tracks 3 & 4 in one operation - it doesn't go any faster but means you can leave it unattended :)

Is there a way to transfer tracks from the dP-24 to the Dp32.. There are no direct channel outputs..
@philtipping
@philtipping 5 жыл бұрын
@dennis Link the guaranteed way is via the Export/Import process - this will work for transferring tracks from the dp24 to *any* device. Export on the dp24 will put the tracks into the AudioDepot folder (see video 8D). Copy the contents of this folder to the AudioDepot folder on the dp32's sd-card, then use the dp32 to import the tracks into the current song. The faster, but more risky, way is to just copy the whole song folder (under the MUSIC folder) from one card to the other, but I'm not sure how compatible the 2 machines are. They have different firmware versions so there *may* be subtle differences in the structure of the .sys files, which are also held inside the song folder. I would use the AudioDepot method just for piece of mind.

Phil, is there a way to have a designated channel come out only the monitor output, so that no one can hear it, but the person listening to the monitor output., and not come out the stereo output, but all the rest of the channels come out the stereo output. Thanks in advance.
@philtipping
@philtipping 7 жыл бұрын
Hi +Steve Sweetwater. You can use the Monitor Select to select other sources instead of the default Stereo Output, so the answer is yes, although it depends if those other sources are free to use in your setup. If one of the Send paths is free, say Send-2, you could route inputs and/or tracks to that and set Monitor Select to Send-2. To prevent those signals also going to the stereo output, you'll need to turn their faders down (physical faders for the tracks, and mixer screen faders for the inputs). If you do this, you must also use the PRE send signals - the POST signals will all be zero as they are tapped off 'after' the faders - by definition.

@philtipping 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. Am rendering part 5 at this moment so should be uploaded tonight. It covers Send effects so no good for you just yet... but the next one does exactly what you want - all 8 inputs *can* be assigned to any of the 24/32 tracks. Each track has its own EQ (in addition to the input EQ), and the levels are controlled via the physical faders as opposed to the virtual ones (which are just for inputs routed direct to the stereo bus). You don't need to be in record mode to do this - you just press Rec on whichever tracks you want (this just arms them) and their signals will bypass the recorder and go straight through to the stereo mix. The only possible 'catch' is there is only a single Insert effect for tracks. It's a chain of 4 separate FX but you can't split the chain. But you've still got the Send FX and the 8 input FX, so if that's ok with you and it's a good discount, I'd snap it up :)) Just make sure you upgrade to latest firmware and use a decent SD-card to avoid all those glitches that have been reported.

@philtipping
@philtipping 3 жыл бұрын
@Coleen Maldonado there are various techniques depending on the type of noise and what you are trying to achieve. There are Track Edit functions for replacing sections of audio with silence. If silence sounds too extreme, you could move these sections to another track (move/paste) and then mix that track with the original, but at a lower volume. Yet another way is to use EQ. There's also a noise gate in the guitar effect block which will lower the signal (and noise) when the signal level drops below a certain threshold.

So when recording with two turntables what is the best way to get the sound levels right?
@philtipping
@philtipping 3 жыл бұрын
@Pedro Cervantes not sure what you mean by 'get the sound levels right'. The recording levels are set with the Trim knobs as shown in the videos. The playback levels are set with the track faders. You can check the balance between the two turntable signals by watching the level bars for each input on the meter - these show the recording levels. Low level signals such as mics should use the XLR sockets, higher line-level signals should use the 1/4" jack sockets, so you may need to check what sort of signal levels come out of your turntables so you can use the correct cables. If you need more detailed steps about setting up the DP machine, the step-by-step guide may be useful to you. Can you copy tracks ,splice amd truncate .aka musiqse concrete can you time stretch zoom in and out ,slightly delay tracks to replicate old school effects
@philtipping
@philtipping 5 ай бұрын
@michaelclaxton4111 There are several cut/copy/paste functions - see Track Edit in the user manual. You can do this from one track to another or within the same track. Old-school delay effects are certainly possible, although there are already built-in effects for some of these. There is a lower limit on the section size you can select, but this can be overcome by lateral thinking and selecting sections either side of the point of interest. All track edit functions are instantaneous, and they can be undone with the UNDO function. There is no time-stretching, but you can export tracks to a computer, process with a DAW, then import back into the song. As long as you use the Export/Import functions, they will remain in sync.

@philtipping
@philtipping 7 жыл бұрын
Hi +Patrickos Cavo, the video on recording shows how to do this. Basically, any tracks already recorded will always play back when you are recording other tracks. For example, if you've recorded, say a guitar rhythm on track 1 and want to overdub, then arm another track, say track 2, make sure nothing else is armed, then press Record. If you turn up track 1's fader, you'll hear it playing through the monitor, so you can overdub your new part in sync, say another guitar piece, or a vocal, onto track 2. By adjusting the track faders for both track 1 & track 2 you can get a balance of sounds in your headphones while you are recording. If you want to add another overdub, arm another track and repeat. You can choose whether to play track 1 or track 2 or a mix of both in your headphones while recording the new part. You need to understand the principles of mixing, and how to get signals routed to your monitor, which is why the videos are done in this order.

Hello Phil, I am stuck at about 7:00 where you say that you plug in an acoustic guitar with a built-in preamp. When I turn the trim knob all the way to "mic" my overload light does not turn on. I'm sure it's some step I'm missing, but I just cannot figure it out.s
@philtipping
@philtipping 2 жыл бұрын
@Michael Escalante it depends how much signal your preamp puts out, and whether you are using the 3-pin XLR inputs or the 1/4" jack inputs. The latter are less sensitive so are less likely to overload. I was only using the example in the video to demonstrate the lights working, so don't worry if you can't replicate it. The bottom line is whether you can get a good enough signal level into the machine such that the meter bars average about -12dB. If you can't, I would check the battery in your preamp (if it uses one), and/or check the cables/connectors - maybe try another source to eliminate things. Thanks for stopping by.

@Thenfly WJAZ not as far as I know. Is there a need for this? I can't see any benefit... or maybe you're concerned about the screen life? There are no moving parts apart from the knobs and faders... and the CD drive on the older DP-24/32 models, although the drive is not used for normal recording. The only other thing which could 'wear out' is the sd-card, and that's a user-supplied item... and if the machine was used purely as a mixer, the card would hardly be written to. @@philtipping Yes, exactly. 2nd hand purchase. Quite a few machines ( ADATS and the like ) have a hidden menu, accessed by some devious combination of "power-on and hold x,y,z" which brings up either a service engineer's diagnostic menu, or some other arcane information and, often, a log of the total hours the machine has been used for. Thanks for the reply Phil.

@@thenflywjaz6917 I know what you mean - I had DATs and ADATs before I abandoned everything tape-based :) The total hours is more relevant with these as they have mechanical parts, motors and tape heads etc, but as far as I know, the only thing with a 'lifetime' on these machines is possibly the LCD screen, although I've never come across one with a failure before. If you buy one 2nd hand, I'd replace the sd-card anyway (and check/update the firmware), and if you find the pots, faders or buttons intermittent, these can usually be fixed with some good switch cleaner - you don't have to take it apart. Deoxit is usually the 'goto' cleaner, but it's very expensive and there are cheaper alternatives. Whatever you use, don't use WD40! Good luck with your decision :)

+Cio Dokop the machine can mix 8 inputs and/or all the recorded tracks. The dp32 has 8 mono tracks and 12 others, which can be either mono or stereo, and these can all be mixed with or without the 8 live inputs. The '32' is a bit misleading as stereo tracks count as 2 channels, so you really only have 20 independent tracks on the dp32 (and 18 on the dp24) - just count the no. of physical track faders.

@@beedslolkuntus2070 Yes you can use it as a live mixer for handling up to 8 inputs. The videos show 2 ways of doing this - simple and advanced. The simple way is easier to set up, but the individual level controls have to be adjusted one at a time via the mixer screen. The advanced way is a bit more complex, but it allows you to use 8 of the physical track faders to control the levels so is more like a 'normal' mixer. There is no need to use any FX or EQ with either method. I wouldn't recommend this machine if you only want a mixer though; there are much cheaper products which will do this.

Phil Tipping which is the video in your many ep that shows the use of basic need, also can you review a different digital mixer??
@philtipping
@philtipping 5 жыл бұрын
@@beedslolkuntus2070 *This* video (3A) describes the basic mixer. Video 6A covers the advanced mixer which uses the track faders. Do you really want a 'digital' mixer or will an analogue one do? Where is the mix output going, e.g. a PA system, a stereo recorder or a computer? A basic analogue mixer with audio outputs could do all of these. Note this Tascam machine only has audio outputs so although it's digital internally, it does not have live digital interfaces to the outside world; the USB socket is only for transferring audio data *after* it's been recorded. Some digital mixers have a live USB connection so can transfer audio in real-time. Some can just transfer the stereo mix, others can also transfer the individual channels, so it really depends what your requirements are. The Tascam Model 24 has a live USB link, but is even more overkill for your 6 inputs and a lot more expensive. Cheaper models include the Behringer Xenyx range. Most vendors do a range of mono & stereo input combinations. I can't review one for you - just search on the internet and pick one which has the no. of inputs you need (make sure they match what you want, e.g. if you have 6 mics, make sure it has at least 6 mic inputs as opposed to line inputs), the type of output, and within your price/quality range.

a great video if you are willing to sit through a very, very looooooong explaination. If you want to get up and running quickly - this is absoultly not the guy for you.

+Curt Paluzzi the step-by-step guide shown in video 12 is a quick solution if you just want a list of buttons to press... maybe try this first, then come back to the videos if you want a more in-depth explanation.

@This Way Up haha, well spotted :) yes motorised faders would be great, but it was just a sloppy edit... not intentional. Thanks for stopping by.

@Mossie Gee You're not alone, which is why I wrote the Step-By-Step Guide which does exactly what you are asking for. Full details here: www.philizound.co.uk/freebies/dp24-32/dp24-32.html I would still recommend you try and revisit the videos at some stage though, as knowing about the signal flow will vastly increase the things you can do with this machine. As it says in the introduction, just pushing buttons without understanding what they're really doing will certainly get you off the ground quickly, but it can only take you so far... and if you have a particular scenario which isn't covered, you won't know how to work things out for yourself. Thanks for stopping by, and good luck.

@Phil Robert give me a shout on email. My address is at the bottom of the page on my philizound.co.uk website. The machine can be quite daunting at first but it's a very powerful and flexible system. If you take your time, it will all make sense eventually and you will be able to make excellent recordings and have a lot of fun overdubbing and adding effects etc. I have a step-by-step guide which takes you through the exact steps for various practical scenarios without getting bogged down with the explanations; they're in a separate section so you can read them as & when you're ready. Full details are here www.philizound.co.uk/freebies/dp24-32/dp24-32.html

Actually if u don’t mind I have a question, the monitor out, I believe my monitors are TS and not TRS, so can I monitor still if I just plug the TR into the monitor out L/R then into my monitor speakers?
@philtipping
@philtipping 3 жыл бұрын
@@philtarus9861You can use either TS-to-TS or TRS-to-TRS cables. The monitor outputs from the DP machine can handle both balanced and unbalanced connections.
