A little aside, since this is a bit off-topic: using alternative sound source for iPhone video. I have had great success with the Rode SC6-L. It takes eg a phones out, or mixer output and replaces the phone’s internal mics. It’s off-topic, since it’s an audio-level interface (to the Rode), rather than digital, as outlined in this excellent video. Obviously it’s digital from the Rode into the iPhone though.

been wandering the same about its use with the 4 channels being recorded simultaneously but haven't been able to do it yet either. also worth commenting that after only a few months i had bought the unit, all of its command stopped working, which meant i couldn't do anything other than turn it on and off. quite unacceptable that quite a "pro" device like this ends up having such technical flaws

That’s super disappointing that yours failed. Have you tried a firmware update? I’d contact Tascam for a resolution.. it’ll be under warranty still.

Hey Miriam, is that iPad or iPod? I’m not sure about iPod but iPad should definitely work. Have you tried a different usb cable? Some are just power leads and don’t carry data.. Another thing worth considering.. is your lightening to USB adapter a genuine apple product? I’ve heard some people have difficulties with aftermarket items. Let me know how you get on..

I have the same question. Also, wondering how long you can record using a condenser microphone since phantom power uses a lot of energy. The Tascam manual says phantom power soon drains the unit’s batteries.

I use iphone 15 Pro Max and I get "USB FS mismatch" error message on my Tascam Portacapture X8. It has the latest firmware and set to 24 bit. Not sure what's going on since it should be something easy, usb-c to usb-c.

I don’t think so. You’d have to mix it in an edit, which is really super easy.

Yes you can! Use the Rode SC6-L interface. One of the best bits of audio kit I’ve ever bought. Any audio - from mixer etc can be used for video sound.

Hi, you shouldn’t have to download a firmware update. It should come up automatically if your usb cable is connected when you power up, if not select it from the menu. Press menu and then 🔽 until you get to USB. Is that option not showing on your dr40x?

@@tripleeightproductions Same with me. I Have a DR-40 that I bought in 2012, I downloaded the last firmware (2.5) and that option for USB on the menu doesn't appear for me as well. When I plug the USB, the only two options that pop up are A) Bus Power and B) Storage...

wow... I had a dr40 before I got the Behringer Uphoria, so are you stating I could have just used my Tascam as an audio interface? (sound newbie). Lastly there's a static hum in my monitoring headphones. I don't know if it's the Behringer Uphoria or the fact that I needed to use a adapter on the headphones for the Uphoria, I think it's the connection b/c of the adapter but wasn't sure if other people had this issue with the Behringer in general

It would help enormously if you could let the viewer see your Tascam at the beginning when you are pressing the buttons and selecting the various options, this would then be helpful. Otherwise it is not helpful, I wish it were. 1 out of 10. 🤥

Can anyone help....? I've set up Record mode as INT STEREO / DUAL RECORD. Hit 'record' - flashes - set levels - hit record again - solid red. Then....it records for 5 seconds and stops recording and flashes red again. It then counts this 5 sec recording as a ''track'' in the Music Files. It's like there is a setting somewhere which is allowing only for 5 seconds of recording. Same thing happens if I use Ext Line In. PS... I've had this for 2 yrs but only learning to use it the last few days. I wonder if it is a software update issue. Any help much appreciated. Wanted to use it tonight....

Got it.....go to REC SETTINGS...MODE...SET ''MODE'' to OFF (was set to NEW FILE and this was causing it to jump to a new file during a ''soundcheck/levels test'' as the audio was low and the machine thinks audio input has ceased and ends the track.

@@tripleeightproductions Going to RECORD MODE on right under the display....top option REC MODE.....Selcting 4 CHAN....does this work? I am without audio software right now to check but from memory it is the way to do this. Another option might be DUAL.. but I think this is to record a ''safety track' 12db under the main track just in case of any unexpected loud noises while recording.

Yes, the recording would be far better with the Tascam compared to the phones built in mic. What are you recording?

@@tripleeightproductions Thanks for your prompt reply. I would like to record the piano and then maybe quitar separately. So far, I used my Android phone for visual and Tascam for audio, after which I used a computer program to put those tracks together. However, I find this process very time consuming and I'd prefer to do a good quality sound and picture all at once. The most important is audio that would provide an appropriate volume range. I've just found out that my Tascam is not DR40X but it's a slightly older version and it doesn't have an I/F option. I could however invest in that newer model of Tascam and an iPhone provided that if I connect it to my phone the end result will be of high quality or close to it. The dynamic range is what I'm after really as I said before. Thank you for your time and help, I really appreciate it!

Hi, although you can use the dr40x as an interface for the iPhone, this records into audio software such as GarageBand. It wouldn’t work as the microphone when using the iPhone camera. You really are much better recording direct into your dr40, capturing video separately and putting them together in editing software on the computer. This is the simplest way to get quality audio and should become quick when you get used to whatever editing software you use.

im fucking sad. i have had this mic for 6 years,, because i thought i would use it for music. i kept it in my drawer. recently dug it back out because i need better audio quality, completely forgot that i had a Good mic. but sadly, this model can't be3 used a USB mic. i think that's a new feature. theres a billion tutorials but none of them work for mine.

Hi, what mic is it that you have? If you’ve got the dr40x or similar audio recorder you should be able to connect your mic to it.

Anything this old (even though the hardware is the same) needed drivers and you cannot ad drivers on iPads or iPhones this is why. If IF IF the company allows firmwear updates you probably can use it after you upgrade
