This is where I disconnected with the movie. The idea that the only reason for the mission was to cover up the US involvement, is silly. The Alien is a threat to the whole planet. But the movie leans so hard in the the USA is horrible theme, the writers are OK with that. Oh and the single hard drive in a storage drawer being the only way to connect this to the USA was similarly hard to believe.

This scene is why I love this movie so much. I have always been a shy and insecure person, who always let others make decisions for him. Seeing at the cinema the team that, even faced with the awareness of facing death, still decides not to listen to Waller anymore and to go and face another mortal danger (not because they were ordered to, not because it is their mission, but because they want to do it, because - as Harley implicitly says - they need a purpose) it was cathartic like few things in the world.

Waller legitimately said in the first movie "I wanna build a team of some very bad people, who I think can do some good." Task Force X going back to stop Project Starfish is exactly what she envisioned. But because she has a mission to complete, she completely contradicts this, degrading them, almost killing them. This is how you write a change of heart. Task Force X may not be heroes, but they instinctively knew to go back and do the right thing, no matter the consequences.
