@guss77 Жыл бұрын
@@forfun6273the CIWS has an effective range of under a mile so it is only relevant for point defence. An Iron Dome battery is often deployed more than a mile outside the residential area it protects, and is not a target in and of itself (mostly because Garad style rockets are not accurate enough to target anything smaller than a civilian population center), so it does not need point defence.
@forfun6273 Жыл бұрын
@@guss77 ok that makes sense. I’m just thinking how sustainable is it when they’re spending like $300 to make a rocket out of fertilizer and sugar. I know you guys are working on the Iron Beam. But I’m not so sure the technology is there yet for that. I wonder if the Iron Dome radar battery can get so good that the missiles can go without their own targeting system. Then the price of the rocket would go down a lot. Sure it would be susceptible to jamming but my understanding is it’s not really going after high tech targets. Maybe it would be better to put a 100kw laser on every tall building that connects to a main radar and targeting system.

It seems like Rafael's claim of "90% effective" is being calculated by including all of the rockets that Iron Dome correctly identified as non-threatening as one it was effective against. That's useful information for operators since you want to know if it isn't wasting ammo. But what I think most of us really want to know is how consistently it shoots down the ones it does decide to fire at.
@seekrengr751 Жыл бұрын
Right, the key metric is "effectiveness per engagement". If identified non-threats are as large as the numbers Cappy listed, that skews the percentage significantly. I'd REALLY like to see a good analysis of the accuracy of rockets/missiles launched by Hamas and Hezbollah - if Iron Dome classifies, say only 20% as actual threats to land in a populated area, that definitely changes the economic balance to a degree.
@dave23720 Жыл бұрын
it is calculated for engaged threats.. it is also clear from the number of actual impacts in civilian areas - thousands of rockets fired and only a handful of impacts in a very densly populated country (much more then 20% would have fallen on populated areas).. and i wouldnt diregard the missiles that Hamas fires especially the longer range - those are more capable missiles with up to 100 pounds of explosives..
@borisbo94 Жыл бұрын
No, that’s not true. The metric by Rafael is the percentage of rockets actually were shot down out of the ones that were actually targeted. Meaning - if 100 rockets were fired and 40 of them could have reached populated areas or other areas of interest (like military installations etc), but only 4 actually reached these areas - then the effectiveness is 90%. And btw, IMO the real rate should be 96% in this case, since the algorithm to determine whether a rocket should be engaged is a necessary part of the whole system, the non covered areas are also “targeted” by the system in a way, just not using kinetic power, but rather using compute power.
@emergcon Жыл бұрын
Correct. You dont need to use your missile defence system to shoot down something that isnt theatening. Looking at U Saudi Arabia, shooting down 250 dollar drones with a 2 million dollar missile. But its excluding those rockets. The 75% interception rate includes them because they wherent interceptet.

@headrockbeats Жыл бұрын
@@samsonsoturian6013 It's the other way around: Iron Dome is the smaller system. David's Sling is meant to target medium ballistic missiles, including the various types of modified S-400 that Russia is now using to bombard Ukrainian cities, as well as cruise missiles and other heavier munitions. It's basically like a Patriot system, but using detection and calculation systems similar to Iron Dome to make interceptions much more guaranteed. This makes sense for Finland, as your cities are significantly more distant from the border with Russia than Israeli cities are from the border with Gaza - the Russians would attack with larger, long-range weapons.
@guss77 Жыл бұрын
Regarding Iron Beam - Itzhak Ben-Israel, a former Israeli MoD R&D head (who in the past was incharge of a previous failed laser defence project Nautilus), estimates that the cost for interception will be about $1000 - much cheaper than even the dirt-cheap Tamir interceptor, but not cents. The major cost is the electricity generation that is very inefficient because it has to generate a lot of power very quickly and collect it in capacitor based short term storage - you can't use cheap, efficient but slow power generation to charge batteries because batteries don't discharge quickly enough.

Hey, just a tiny detail you mentioned in the beginning of the video... Those were not "hang gliders". They were "powered paragliders". Hang gliders are the rigid triangle shaped light weight aircraft that you hang from underneath. Paragliders are shaped somewhat similar to skydiving canopies. I actually find it interesting that they used PPGs (powered paragliders). Those are not easy machines to fly. You need to take lessons and learn how to do proper landings, especially when you are carrying a passenger. The flying community is very small and a lot of us all over the world know each other. There's a big PPG community in Cairo Egypt, just next door to Gaza. I suspect that's where they learned and probably where they got the paramotors because there are a lot of tandem operators near the pyramids that fly tourists around for money. As far as what I saw on the videos, the skill of their landings was moderate. They definitely took a few weeks of flying lessons. They didn't look like experts but certainly not noobs either.

Hi I would like to clarify an important point that will put important perspective to the cost of the intercepter missle. It should not be compared to the cost of intercepted rocket but rather to the damage that the rocket will produce like a car 25-50 k us$, a building 100-1000 k us$, a life uncoparable. In this prespective the 50 k of the tamir missle is totally cost worthy. And there are other costs that are connected like reservist call up, land or air incursion. And so on.
@Kriss_L Жыл бұрын
That works to an extent. But when you can shoot 1,000 rockets at $1,000 each the cost of shooting them down goes up rapidly when the interceptor cost exceeds the the incoming rocket. And the attacker only has to get one round on target, the defender has to get them all.
@artwersky Жыл бұрын
@@Kriss_L hi you are correct , eventually only about 10% of the rockets reach a target, and as you said it needs 100% accuracy for an interceptor to hit it, this is not the case in many SAM examples 2 to several missiles are used to verify a hit. in the iron dome case with an accuracy of 90% this is not needed in all cases (but used in some). the cost in the case of iron dome is linear. so no matter how long the battle goes on the cost ratio stays the same and the cost considerations as i have mentioned does not change, and is still leaning towards the use of the iron dome missiles over absorbing hits in strategical targets or high population targets. it is important to state that the majority of the populous has "bomb shelter's" that are highly effective against Hamas weapons. so the iron dome is only 1 of many layers of protection that Israeli populous have.

You should cover their new Iron Sting system.

Wow, $40,000 per interceptor is really cheap for an air defense system.

It’s confusing because the idf does not intercept attacks that have a no-hit trajectory, meaning the missile will hit in a field and present little to no risk to human life

Thanks Cappy for yet another great video. The only question I raise to you regards to the comment that the Iron Dome was meant to replace the need of a field engage. It is clearly not right, as it implies that having missiles shot at civilians, with some way to avoid casualties, is a normal situation that should be considered as agreed status quo... This is not the case nor the intention. Iron Dome simply comes to save lives of civilians attacked by groups intended to make lives intorable, or in other words, terrorize civilians

The only thing that separates iron dome is the fact that it was the only system in the world that is tested against saturation attack with not just hundreds but thousands of missiles simultinously and effective hit majority of it.

11:22 why? Just more handle more carry?

check out the laser upgrade. so they laser dont need ammo but you have a power issue kinda. how much does one blast from the "LASER" cost 5 second kill times for the tech.

self driving kits for vehicles so you could potentially put it in any vehicle give it a weapon system with self targeting.

The only way that it makes sense to count intercept rate in my opinion is: If a rocket hits a target within a city or pretty much not an open field, it's a failed intercept even if no intercept was attempted All intercept attempts are counted as the number to divide with failures. Intercepts that are not attempted due to being missed by the enemy are only counted against the enemy accuracy, not the iron dome. The "worth intercepting" system is graded separately from the intercept system. It is measured against all lauches, and scored negatively on false negatives (determines no intercept when it ends up hitting a valid target) and separatly noting false-positives

Since we're already on the topic, is there any chance we'll get a video on the Iron beam? I've seen some footage of it being used in the current conflict seems like a game changer

I WONDER 🤔 IF ANYONE HAS THOUGHT OF COMBINING THE IRON DOME WITH A U.S. NAVY CIWIS GATLING GUN DEFENSE SYSTEM? Now that combination would be so lethal to any attacker. I wish that I could see something like that, IT WOULD BE SO AWESOME!!! Great video 📸.

Frankly, I am surprised that you did not mention Raytheon (or RTX) even once. Why? If Raytheon has no role in the fabrication of Iron Dome, how is U.S. supplanting the Iron Dome needs (official statement, you quoted it)? This aside from the approximate 1500 Iron Dome missiles stored under U.S. control in Israel? You also did not mention the Arrow system, not deployed yet, but heck, you mentioned David's Sling, which is not operational either.
