The funny part is that the same happened with both France and Australia. A French guy uploaded the schematics of the french tank turret to prove it could turn faster than it happened in the game of World of Tanks and an Australian guy posted on 4chan the entire blueprints of their newest submarine but nobody opened the link and just called OP "fake and gay".

I am a War Thunder player. This is the fifth leak. There were two leaks about the Tiger attack and utility helicopter, the Challys armor, the Leclercs turret traverse and now ZTZ-99As round. The best is: The leaked penetration data isn't even implemented in game because the dev Gaijin now can't do it anymore without looking bad to the MOD of several states.

I've always wondered how that's handled. I mean, like, surely there is a time frame, right? Like, sure, they don't want to encourage leakers so they won't just use leaked data, but at the same time after it's been a couple years and the actual specs of the technology is just publicly known, does the game just keep using wrong information because "well technically it was first discovered by someone leaking it here"?

Most people never consider the usefulness of photographic intelligence. Take the bolt on ERA panels - the size of the bolt holes visible (4 per panel) gives an indication of bolt diameter and this gives an idea regarding the relative tensile strength of those bolts which, in turn, allows you to estimate the maximum load that they are capable of supporting on a moving tank, which allows you to work out the maximum weight or mass of each panel and estimate the amount of explosive that each could theoretically carry, which allows you to determine exactly how effective each panel is when triggered and possibly the speed at which they detonate, which allows you to determine what is required to defeat them. Whew! The dimensions of the roadwheels also help here, because they help in estimating the maximum weight or mass of the tank which tells you something about its mobility, where it can travel on its tracks or by truck, which bridges it can use, etc., The videos help a lot too.

Back in the 90's I was in Israel. I was talking to an Israeli tank driver. I mentioned the fact that the Israeli Merkava was the most crew survivable tank because of it's internal fire extinguishers activated when a shell penetrates (what's the military term for this). He was shocked and asked 'how do you know this'? I told him I used to make plastic model kits and this information was included in the kits instructions. Not as serious as the leaked info on the new Chinese due to a video game, but, it happened in the past.

But 73 metric tons on an old platform sounds very heavy. Even at 66.8 tons it sounds like it's coming close to the limit without redesigning other parts of the tank?

Here's a Fun Fact. Apparently there has been at least 7 or 8 leaks in the War Thunder Forums(at least from what I known or heard of). The most famous of this are the UK's most modern MBTs the Challenger 2 and France's Leclerc and at present the Type 99. The others are something that I personally unsure of such as allegedly an M1 Abrams armor package and a German Eurocopter Tiger(or maybe it was an entirely different line of Eurocopter I dunno). A few important aspects you missed out on. 1. The reverse gear is much faster than Soviet designs and matches western reverse speeds 2. It features neutral steering letting it turn faster in the spot, also unlike Soviet designs. 3.Reported but unconfirmed to have -7 to -8 degrees of gun depression making it more effective over ridge lines and defilades than Soviet and older Chinese counterparts. The only weakness seems to be the carousel style auto loader but differing tactics like you discussed can mostly degate this disadvantage such as only engaging at range. Would not be surprised if a version of the 99 or a new tank with a bustle style auto loader is introduced in the next 5-10 years. Edit: the type 15 light tank already uses a bustle style autoloader meaning that development of a 125mm version shouldn’t be too difficult.

Carousel is not a bad solution. It is very difficult to hit ammunition placed low on the floor. The problem with Russian tanks is that after the carousel the ammunition is everywhere else in the tank. Each armor penetration ignites one of the shells, which then ignites all the other shells including those in the carousel.

Another correction would be that the so called "Type 99 A2" is not a real specification. Based on Chinese naming schemes, variants of military equipment would use the next alphabet rather than numeber. Correction: 02:00 It would appear that the accuracy of 15°C refers to the performance at that temperature. Median represents the midpoint of the data, not the variation. So at 59°F half of all rounds will fire faster and half will fire slower than 1760 m/s. ex. rnds fired may be 1700, 1705, 1750, 1770, 1775, and 1776 m/s. the median is 1760 and the average is 1746. Hey Task & Purpose one correction I'd like to make is the ending statement of Chinese tank not being tested in battle. There are actually exported type-96s used in the Sudanese civil war that saw the vehicle go up against T-72As and destroyed them without tanking any casualties. This engagement and entirety of the war is relatively unreported but there are some sparse articles that reported the events. The type 96s exported to Sudan had no ERA modifications on whereas the T-72As in service with the South Sudanese had ERA. This can be seen as a evidence for strong composite armor even in older Chinese tanks, but we don't know what ammunition the T-72s used though. It's just interesting to see Chinese tanks starting to over-take Soviet/Russian tanks in certain areas like technology and armor.

It's nice to be aware of the discrepancies between what the Chinese military says and the Chinese media says. The media would like to make outlandish speculations, inflate the capabilities and boast about it because their only objective is to produce contents most attractive to the Chinese audience. The military, if anything, would actually want to be careful when making a claim, and would sometimes even understate its capabilities. In the EN-speaking circles because of the language barrier, people usually just assume China is this monolithic block: "China says" "China thinks" while in reality the Chinese military, the MFA, the Chinese media, their objectives are not at all algined.

Plus some people (mostly idiots who watch Fox News) think that China = Russia and PLA = Russian army. They're pretty much opposites. The Russian army is big as they can make it and eats up a huge chunk of the state's funds with the main objective to attack and subjugate all neighbours. The PLA is a small professional force to defend against Vietnam and slow down India or Russia while a general mobilisation can be effected. The PLA is also expected to start and run companies to provide its own budget. Which makes a lot of sense because looking back to when the anti-maoists seized power, China was a shambles. They needed a lot of money to develop and they needed it fast, but you can't get that if you're financing a huge army for some hypothetical big war, while with Tibet incorporated into China, you've defense-in-depth against both your peer adversaries. So a PLA capable of stomping on Vietnam, Taiwan invading, North Koreans invading and the small western neighbours like Kirgizistan, means all strategic needs are covered.

Coming from a guy who plans on joining the Army within the year as a 19K (Armor Crewman) with such high levels of reported armor on the heaviest variant of the Type 99A do you think this might prompt the US Army to finally pursue procurement of the longer barrel Rheinmetall L/55 120mm gun to replace their variant of the aging Rheinmetall L/44 for the greater penetrative performance which seems to be growing more and more necessary to deal with modern peer armored threats? Or do you believe that there is a better option for the US to future-proof it's favorite mainline armored asset? It seems more and more that as armor increases the Abrams is slowly falling behind in lethality and protection despite the enhanced armor that came with the SEPV3 version of the tank. This is of obvious concern to myself should the worst come to pass during my future service.

You are incorrectly considering, at least, the Russian doctrine of the use of tanks.In it, the enemy's tanks are fought first by artillery, including jet, then by aviation, infantry with the help of anti-tank weapons.Tanks in the Russian doctrine are used to break through the enemy's defenses, naturally not by themselves, but in a group with the main units of the ground forces. And only at the end of this whole list is the fight against enemy tanks.In battles in the same Ukraine, tanks and tanks converge very rarely, and there losses from the Ukrainian side in tank duels are about 1 to 6, due to better training of the crew, better protection and means of detection.

I disagree about your conclusion that China does not have the same problem with corruption within it's military that Russia have considering how often their presidator clear their political rivals with charges of corruption. Hell that had significant problems about high officer litterally buying their positions fairly recently (2015-2017) and the military being use as a profit making machine. I think the corruption problem there is at least as bad as the russian one. Might even be worse since Russia was involved in armed conflict before the Ukraine's invasion.

2015 and 2017 is not recent in Chinese timeframes. Remember that 2017 was the beginning of Xi's military reforms. It has been 5 years since then. I would argue the difference is China has a goal, Russia doesn't it is all just one man Putin. The problem with China is that the party is so institutionalised that even Xi can't rule alone, he has to appease the party to maintain his power. But it also means that the party is for the most part united in actually securing themselves and the country. Ie. I could be Russian Military and just want to make money, does embezzle the funds for the procurement. I have no personal stake in this as I can run with my money, In China on the other hand, there isn't such a way, and they actually have a plan (whether all the party members stick to it and have good character is individual dependent, but the likelihood is less) Sinica Podcast did a great research and talk about the CCP apparatus and how it filters out less desirable individuals from its ranks In that 5 years China has had more than 10 cities have new Metro Lines, China's economy has grown from US$12 to 17 trillion. I recall in 2008, China had its first HSR line. By 2011 it had the largest network (4 years). 30 years ago in 1990, most Chinese had the average wage of Gabon or Guinea-Bissau

Abram's is only limited to 40 off-road as a recommended top speed. You go over a hill at the speed and tonnage and the tank will kill the occupants. It unofficially can go 70mph plus on pavement (that's coming from a driver I talked to in the 90's),limited by the fact that the rest of the battalion can only travel at about 40mph. It's not about size too, Abrams has very impressive acceleration for getting in and out of dug in positions (not that we'd ever need to dig in an Abrams). I won't comment on the T99A, since I know so little about it, but I will say Abrams was designed with enough killing power and armor to handle that class of tank. Also, US doctrine ditched ditched snorkels on tanks a long time ago. Takes too long to ford and very few river banks can handle a tank going up and down. We can lay a bridge almost instantly or hop some light armor via transport aircraft to create a bridgehead. You remember when Saddam blew the bridges into Baghdad? Barely, even slowed our attack.
@wolfrainexxx
@wolfrainexxx 2 жыл бұрын
Literally all US Military hardware can travel faster than what the public thinks it can. An example would be like the Stryker, which can comfortably cruise at 90mph on Highway. The newer M1A2 SEP V3 can exceed 80mph pretty easily, but the speed governor won't allow it, because again... a vehicle that big suddenly breaking, turning, or stopping would be extremely dangerous to everything, and everyone, involved.

@MrGeforcerFX 2 жыл бұрын
earlier abrams (like the ones from the 90's) were a good chunk lighter then our modern up armored versions, so over all pep and acceleration has taken a hit. But the suspension system and transmission has been upgraded as well over time and can handle the increased weight, but the turbine is the same power as it was before.

you could also trace back some design lessons and features from the older WZ1224 prototype another thing to note is regarding the name calling for chinese MBTs: generally, "type XX" is the western designation. chinese designation is generally "ZTZ-XX" or "WZ-XXX" (WZ being the prototype + production name and ZTZ being the PLA name. for exemple, as far as i know, the "type99" s chinese names are respectively WZ123 for R&D + prod and ZTZ99 for army)

I don’t see any significant advantage the type 99a has over the Abrams. At least advantages that couldn’t also be applied to the Abrams if needed. As for speed, my understanding was the abrams was governed at 45mph and is physically capable of higher but was considered unnecessary do to the added wear on the running gear. I believe I even read that an unlocked Abrams was capable of hitting 70mph with a full combat load. As for fuel consumption. Not really an issue when you can literally raid the local liquor store for fuel. Obviously that was a joke despite it actually being true.

There isn’t any significant advantage. In fact China only built about 400-600 of these Type 99A vs America’s 5000+ Abrams. The reason is simple, China doesn’t believe in Type 99A. 9:02 Full stop, the tanks design doctrine never was for being a lightweight naval landing tank, it is already 10 tons heavier than soviet counterparts. These tanks were precisely intended to hull down in defensive. delaying operations against hordes of Soviet tanks streaming down from Siberia into North eastern China. Before these new tanks became available the PTZ 89 tank destroyer (as the PLA tanks were at that time only equipped with weak 105 mm rifled guns with the PTZ being the only one with a decent main gun) was intended to destroy as many Soviet tanks as possible in direct fire before a "people's war" mass insurrection would drive out the Soviets.

After the Gulf war, China realized that soviet styled "quantity over quality" approach was braindead and flawed. China expected America to lose against the 4th largest military (iraq), but America won within litteral weeks with impressive results. As a result, China began to take inspiration from America rather than Russia, and now try to go for quality over quantity. Chinese tanks are basically designed to do the same defilade techniques that modern western tanks practice. China made a smart decision and based their military off the Americans. Deng Xiaoping did say "No matter if it is a white cat or a black cat; as long as it can catch mice, it is a good cat." They realized Americans knew what they were doing, and learnt. I hope China doesnt invade Tiawan or pull anything in the future. Their not Russia, and will be 100x better performing.

The tank which has less crew has less interior volume, thus it can be overall smaller and lighter, while it can potentially have comprable armour to heavier western tanks which have more crew, more interior volume and more overall size and volume. That being said the composite on Chinese and russian tanks probably is worse formula then what is on western tanks however with heavy ERA the armour might actually be even better, though obviously ERA is a one shot wonder. So yes everything is a trade. Top attack is the main thing here tho and nothing except an active defense system that covers the upper hemisphere helps there, no tank in the world can survive top attack. That being said I think if it's cheaper modern tanks should not even have active defense covering front armour since conventional tank tactics is to have best armour there but the upper hemisphere must be covered. It would be an acceptable trade. There's even videos of Russians under Ukrainian ambush and a top attack nlaw scores a kill but direct multiple frontal shots at a different tank in the column that turned towards the ambushing troops fail to penetrate it.
