Taste Hawaii’s Famous Mochi

Great Big Story

Great Big Story

6 жыл бұрын

Japan’s favorite, mochi, has become a Hawaii treat-at least in Nora Uchida's kitchen. Uchida, a third-generation Japanese-American living in Hilo, Hawaii, inherited her grandmother's mochi recipe and evolved it to include the colors and eclectic tastes of her beloved state. For the past 25 years, she and her family have owned and operated Hilo's last mochi storefront, Two Ladies Kitchen. If you can beat the line running out the door on weekends, you're in for a delicious, only-in-Hawaii treat.

An Uber driver recommended I check out this place whilst I was in Hilo a couple of weeks ago. He said it was just a “hole in the wall” sort of place but it had the best mochi you could find. I bought six pieces, they gave me two extra strawberry daifuku as a “visitor bonus.” The next day I went back and they actually recognized me and were just glad that I liked it. Really sweet people working there.

Lol. No offense but majority of Japanese stuffs are originated from China. Thing like Chinese characters you see in shopa and restaurants, those chinese old building, Chinese Qin/Han inspired clothing that know as kimono, the famous Chinese chopsticks and mochi aka Chinese new year mochi cake. P. S I remember reading somewhere that the ninja was also came from Shaolin China. When a ninja does it hand signal, it's representing Buddha.

It’s not that it’s “really hot.” It’s just that the temperature is regulated by the water that surrounds the islands, so the sun or the lack of sun doesn’t have an effect on the temperature that much. That’s why Hawai’i doesnt really have distinct seasons.

I live in Hawaii and there's so much culture and life in the islands. To just give a little taste of what it's like. We have our own little language, trust me, most of the time it's not pure Hawaiian. Alot of people local to Hawaii speak Pighin (you pronounce it like pigeon.) It's like English accept broken, you can't teach it to someone they need to pick it up over the years. We are VERY family oriented and love each other very much (sometimes😂.) But most importantly THE FOOD! We love food here and bond with family over it. I would really recommend you try Lau Lau (don't eat the leaves on the outside), poké (you say it with a short e, it's not poke or pokey),and kalua pig(it's pork, but cooked underground to make it more savory and don't worry it's totally clean.) And just a quick tip, if you really want to capture the beauty of Hawaii try to stay away from tourist traps and go more to the nature side of things and take a hike or go to plantation tours if you want to see the history and beauty that Hawaii can offer. Thanks if you've read this long and Maunakea forever.

Whooooooo I went there and it was really good, somehow not as good as I expected? But thats because I just like traditional japanese mochi better. If I remember they had clementines, grapes, strawberries, taro, chocolate. Yet somehow it wasn't overly sweet. If you go I recommend getting the box of random ones because then there's a surprise inside each one as you don't know which kind you'll be getting!

@@tastingthunder1237 Don't understand how having preferences is negative. Mochi originated in Japan, this is Hawaii's twist on traditional mochi. I think it was super delicious and the shop owners seem absolutely delightful and I think transforming something and changing it is very innovative and it's amazing they were able to make a twist on it. I just stated as someone who loves mochi that i personally like japanese>hawaiian mochi. The negative vibes are w u my dood
