I live in northern Norway just below the Arctic Circle, and the strawberries grown up here are considered the best in Norway. That is due to the 24 hours of daylight and relative low temperature during summer that makes them grow more slowly than the ones grown down south, allowing them more time to develop the flavours and aroma.
@billyeveryteen7328 Жыл бұрын
What even is the ideal climate for strawberries? Because it doesn't even seem to matter. You can grow them in southern California, which is arid, France which is sort of Mediterranean, the American Northwest which I think is Oceanic, and now I just learned they grow in Norway, which is sub-Arctic. That's a vast array of wildly different climates for a fruit to grow. I mean, not that I'm complaining; strawberries are great, and it's nice that you can get them pretty much anywhere.

You always want to buy strawberries that are evenly coloured, they will have a better flavour than ones that aren't. You also want to look for types of strawberries that have short growing seasons, because they will have better flavour and colour than ones that have longer growing seasons. The ones that have long growing seasons are not as good because they are better for mass market as they travel extremely well.

That's really interesting about the frost + root vegetable mechanism. Growing up farming, everyone knows that carrots and other root veggies should only be picked after the first frost because they're sweeter, but I didn't know why the plants converted the starches as a response. The sugars working as an anti-freezing agent in the vascular system makes a lot of sense.

These men simply can’t cut fruit properly. Between Jaime “avacadoing” his mango and Mike cutting all of the citrus through the stem end had me dying. It’s funny because the hand model got it right. 😂

I can almost understand the mango but to not know how to cut citrus. Pitiful (sorry Mike).
@rahulr1305 Жыл бұрын
No...It's not that the hand model got it right... It really depends on the application. If you want to eat it, you cut it like the normals did - from the stem end so you can easily make more sections...if you're gonna juice it, cut it like the hand model did, along the equator so that the sections don't block the juice from flowing properly. So while I agree Jamie should be thrown in prison for trying to avocado a mango, the normals actually cut the citrus correctly.
@PetWessman Жыл бұрын
@@melissalambert7615 Don't you mean 'pith-iful'? ;)
@stuckincollege1778 Жыл бұрын
@@rahulr1305 I think it also depends on the area, because I have Asian parents, and they taught me to cut like the hand model. It's easier to get all the fruit because you an just spread it like a mango and the segments does the cutting for you, it's also the easier way if you are using it in a dish or as a snack. But this also depends on what citrus, since you mainly did this with thin peel or soft peels, but stuff like guava or harder peels then you do it the Sorted way

Those strawberries had me drooling omg 🤤 That giant lemon reminded me of one of my favourite citruses: pomelo! My absolute favourite fruit is jackfruit… when ripe (not too ripe, it still has to have this kind of firmness when you bite into it) and in season it has the most fragrant aroma and the most delicious taste🤤
@MuriKakari Жыл бұрын
But so expensive outside the countries it grows, unfortunately, since they tend to be sold by weight and you can't eat most of the jackfruit. If you boil the seeds, they take on the consistency of cooked fingerling potatoes with a slightly nutty flavor. So good. If your jackfruit isn't perfectly ripe, you can cook it like meat with butter in a curry or stirfry. Season it like it's meat, especially with allspice and it tastes pretty good that way too.
@migrantt Жыл бұрын
You do have to be careful as to who you serve it to, though. It's SUPER high in natural latex. So if you are or are serving it to someone with either a latex sensitivity or allergies, jackfruit is a real problem. Even the fumes (aroma) emanating from the fruit when ripe can send someone into anaphylaxis. (Makes it problematic when you realize that soooo many vegan dishes use jackfruit as a meat substitute because of it's texture)
@MuriKakari Жыл бұрын
@@migrantt Ooh, yeah. Thanks for the reminder. It's super important and lots of people (me included) don't think of secondary allergens like that as a possiblity. And I'm sure a lot of people with latex allergies aren't used to thinking of it as something they have to watch out for in foods.

Seeing the pineapple brings me back to really sad situations where I bought - what I thought - ripe and delicious pineapple given this "loose leaf test". Just to to have them sit for one day and when I cut into them they are either more sour/harder than expected or already turning brown/turning on the edges. Maybe you can share some tips and tricks how to pick the best produce in the future?

What's "the loose leaf test"? I just smell the pineapple.

13:21 "parsnips are like healthy chips" YES!!! It's not only me who thinks that!!! I slice them thinly and crunch on them while watching a movie or something. I don't think you should eat anything if you really dislike it. (I strongly dislike any millet dishes, but I like most cereals and vegetables.) If you dislike parsnips, you may like turnips or some cabbage variety , and it's fine.

Here, in New Jersey, late summer, round about the end of August, we get the most incredible blueberries you've ever eaten. You can even find them growing wild in certain parts of the Pine Barrens.

We have some incredible grapes and muscat around here ---actually peaches too👍

Would love to see you try tropical fruits like mangosteen, rambutan, jackfruit and durian😄

They've tried those before. The durian was in one of their poker face challenges

I am so with Mike on the chocolate/orange combo. Bleh. But I don't generally like chocolate and fruit in any combination, although I'll make an exception for Cadbury's Fruit & Nut Bar. 🙂

Me too,especially if its a chocolate bar, but I work at a bakery and we have bread with chocolate chips and candied orange bits and its stupidly delicious!

Feijoa season in Autumn in NZ. Very fragrant fruit. People tend to love them or hate them.

Not a fruit, but here in Germany asparagus season just started. Over here, white asparagus is the most popular. It is usually served with potatoes, prosciutto-style ham and Hollandaise. The season lasts roughly from Easter to late June and during this time little huts pop up on street corners, where all you can buy is asparagus and occasionally seasonal fruit like strawberries.

In the US we have an herbal plant called bergamot (scientific name is Monarda). It is in the same plant family as basil and mint. It is often described as being used in Earl Gray tea...

Feijoa from Aotearoa, were in their season now. The texture always surprises people that haven't tried them but the flavour is so yum and unique. Feijoa sour lollies are awesome too

Haven't finished the episode as yet. But sapphire grapes or moon drop grapes in season are absolutely phenomenal. We only have queen pineapples here, in South Africa, and they are amazing when in season. Wait, they didn't say bergamot was in earl grey tea? Oh they did, but they didn't know. My gran had those lemons growing in her garden, they were very very lemony. You could smell that part of the garden.

I don't know why but those shots of citrus fruits getting squished over a cutting board made me unreasonably mad 😅

i felt the same. angry about the waste and also kind of disgusted because those long finger nails seemed so unhygienic.

@@robopecha Kush spent hours getting his nails done for those glamour shots! Jokes aside, do you never wash your hands? Why would you assume no one else does?
@bcaye Жыл бұрын
@@KhronicD, because washing your hands is not good enough to keep long nails clean and with polish on you can't even be sure you clean under them properly.
