I didn’t think Woodpecker cider was still made. For those of us of a certain age it was definitely our first experience drinking alcohol as a teenager. I remember being very ill drinking that, would never touch it again 🤢

Yep, Woodpecker used to be my drink of choice late 70s & early 80s, when most pubs only ever had Woodpecker or Strongbow, and seldom both. Then my local started to stock an unlabelled cider that I think was brewed in someone's bathtub on one of the local farms. It was much cheaper and tasted ok, and 3 pints had me on the floor!

You have to be careful with local cider that's been made in someone's barn. If it says scrumpy on the bottle, better pre-book your ambulance.

Woodpecker is what you drink while 13, down the park, with your mates, 40 years ago. It was easy to acquire then, as some retailers thought of it as a kids drink, as did some adults.

Oh my! Woodpecker used to be the underage drinkers "let's-get-pissed-on-Saturday-night" alcohol of choice back when I was a teenager. It was cheap, came in 2 litre pop bottles and was so sweet it didn't taste like booze. This was 50 years ago, so it's been around for a while!

Of all the ciders sampled, Bulmers Woodpecker is probably the most filtered, most pastuerised cider available, and yet it was Alanna's favourite. That's a bit like a real ale enthusiast plumping for a gassy lager as their beverage of choice.

You twice thought Thatchers but they were not there, however you obviously know the brand and if you ever get down this way call in to the farm and try there rough (scrumpy) cider. Somerset is the true home of cider. There are also small makers with excellent ciders of their own.

I can remember clearly as a student at Exeter University, going to a village called Thorverton, north of Exeter, and the bar man suggested I try a glass from a barrel in the corridor outside the bar. Silly me - that had to be the most alcoholic drink I have ever had. Scrumpy indeed! All the folks in the pub had a quick chuckle as another student fell prey to what was no doubt a common stunt.

'Woodpecker' cider is tasty enough. During my youth it was classified as the weak person's cider before you graduated to 'Strongbow' cider. Looking back now they are both more chemically enhanced and bear little/no resemblance to real cider (scrumpy) like 'Old Rosie'. Great cider selection from Herefordshire (HehRaFordshurr).

As a Brit, and I believe other Brits may concur, there IS ONLY 3 major brands of cider in England and they are Strongbow, Taunton and Woodpecker, but there is ONLY one grand daddy of all ciders, and it's called Scrumpy, the strongest cider in England, Alanna? If you get to travel to the SW of England stop off at a small pub in Somerset and ask for a pint of Scrumpy, then try and walk out the pub door, and then you'll know why the locals call it "Knee Trembler". Real Scrumpy only comes from the Somerset area, there are ripoffs, being sold, but nothing compares to the real Scrumpy, also, real Scrumpy made by the locals in Somerset is around 15% alcohol by volume, whereas commercially bought Scrumpy is between 6% to 9%. Even though I live here in the US now, I originally hailed from a small village in Somerset called 'Four Forks", and I basically grew up on Scrumpy, I make here in the US, and man! hehehehehe, my neighbor tried it and just like moonshine, he couldn't breath for a while,,, his throat started closing up, but after a while he drank a bit more, and I said to him "I bet you can't drink an entire pint", he laughed and sure enough he drank the whole pint, and gloated "see I told ya, I don't feel nothing", "yeah?", I said "now get up and walk out the door" (this was in the winter), as soon as he started to walk out the door, the cold air got him and his legs literally gave out from under him, I just laughed and laughed and laughed, I just couldn't stop. I can only drink 2 pints and I'm so far wasted I can't even talk not alone see straight.

Hiya. Back in the day, we used to have Woodpecker as the sweet cider to offset the bitterness of the stout (Guinness) when ordering a Stout & Cider Black Velvet. Other stouts are available. A bottle of each mixed together (obviously) would give you a pint and it's quite a 'heavy' drink. Stay safe. All the best to you.

'C' just got a little over excited to be on your video....:) I liked Merrydown Cider back in the early 60's, as a mate older than me bought it for me, (under age) and did give him the money. I thought that after that cider testing session, you would be up on the worktop, dancing and swinging your glasses over your head laughing.....:) But no... I have heard on the internet of a 'Dickins Cider' which apparently is popular.. I reckon there was a lot more cider consumed, but edited out......later....:) Good video!...

Great taste test! My favourite ciders when I lived in the uk is Aspall’s Cider. Unfortunately Aspall cider was responsible for a early bath for me on what should have been a pub crawl lasting the whole day. I usually drink ales but for the first 4 pubs we went in there was very limited choice so I ended up drinking Aspall organic 6.8% or their Premier Cru also 6.8% so within 2 hours I was pretty drunk and decided to go home early in disgrace

Well done, by your original description of number B, I guessed it was Scrumpy Jack. It, Woodpecker and Strongbow are all members of the Bulmer family. I was surprised you didn't get Old Rosie from it's lack of fizz. P.S. Woodpecker is a little sweet for me and of the Bulmers I've tried, Strongbow is my favourite. Westons and Thatchers are my two favourite brands from 'er-ay-ford-sheer. Well, that's how it's pronounced in Norf-amp'on-sheer.

Woodpecker used to be a big brand in the 70s and 80s. Possibly THE biggest cider brand? Strongbow's heavy marketing seemed to have pushed it to the sidelines since then. I'd completely forgotten about it until this video.
@caphowdy666
@caphowdy666 2 жыл бұрын
I think I said this before on your previous cider video, but during the 70s/80s, Woodpecker was probably THE biggest name in cider here. Even as a kid we all knew what Woodpecker was even if we didn't drink it as our parents did. It was way before cider became trendy. When I used to drink, I hated beer and lager, and used to drink spirits but I always finished before everyone else due to smaller pours, so I decided to give cider a go and that became my drink of choice, especially with the likes of Kopperberg and Rekorerlig, but one time in a pub (and this has to be 10 years or so ago) all they had at the time was bottles of Woodpecker (never seen cans before) so I decided to give it a try as I had never had one before, but remembered it from my youth. I absolutely loved it as it was to me the most apple tasting apple cider I had ever had.

You should try some of the west country scrumpy. Its not something you can get from your local "offy" and often comes in a random assortment of odd bottles/ packaging and its generally flat (as in not fizzy). Its very good but doesn't keep for long (as its flat).

Woodpecker is *really* sweet. I used to drink it when I was about 17 and didn't yet like beer.

Another great adventure!!😊 Yes, of course we want to see the low alcohol drinks! I haven't had a low alcohol drink since the 1980's. . .

Love cider or scrumpy as we call it in the west used to buy a half gallon from local farms for about 45p in the 70s 😁

In my younger days, Woodpecker was regarded as a "Woman's Cider" because it was so sweet. I prefer dry ciders and my favourite is Gayner's Old English.

I think Woodpecker was the first cider I ever had, more years ago than I want to admit. Very nice. And the can design helped.

That was excellent, what a fabulous job by Ellie and Lily. In my memory, Woodpecker cider was around a long time ago alongside Strongbow. I bet this has been the best taste test you have ever done!

I feel like Woodpecker is a real 80's cider. I vaguely remember TV adverts for it. I don't think I've ever deliberately drunk Strongbow outside of a park when I was underage. Maybe in a Snakebite many years ago.

Now i, I am a bit of an authority on cider. Well, an enthusiastic amateur with vast experience, as my Facebook bans will attest to and my favourite is Thatcher's Vintage. Henry Western's Vintage used to be called Old Rosie and I have only passed out on my mates hall floor once after walking up the hill to his house despite what the tabloids say x
