WC2 was my first RTS, and while I don't have that many memories of that long ago I can still very clearly remember the first night I stayed up late when I was 7 playing the first 3 missions of WC2. A few months later, I would find myself and a friend at a Wizards of the Coast in the mall, and I asked if they had WC2 available to play. They said it was too old and they didn't have that, but they had Starcraft. And that was that, RTS became solid part of the foundation in my gaming universe. Good times.

I grew up in a very small mountain town. There was a place where some of the teens and mostly pre-teens would go where they had loud music and laser tag. They also had a 166mghz gateway computer with some pre-installed games inside a small arcade room. It was just the one and you were time limited and the line for it was always crazy long because not everyone had internet or even a home computer at the time. But it was the first time I saw WarCraft II. Waiting in line watching another kid play. It was the start of my Blizzard fanboydom. One of my fondest memories... I think I was in 6th or 7th grade, it had come a huge snow. School was closed for a week and we couldn't leave the house. But I sat in my room the whole time playing the crap out of WarCraft II and Quake. Them were good days.

@15:45 - "Tides of Darkness" is WC2's subtitle. "Beyond the Dark Portal" was its expansion set. There were two more lesser-known expansions (published by Maverick Software, authorized by Blizzard) called "The Next 70 Levels" and "The Next 350 Levels" that added custom maps. Since it was the dark days of dial-up internet, it was the only way to get a bunch of maps without having to make them yourself. I had the 350 level pack myself back in the day.

It's amazing how different Warcraft "felt" back then. So... grounded. Down-to-earth. WC1 was a solid start, but 2 just brought the entire experience to a whole new level. It had this raw, beautiful aesthetic, naval combat enriched the map variety, the story wasn't a convoluted mess yet, it didn't try to be EPIC to the point you just can't help but facepalm or laugh at it all, it was so FUN to play... In many ways, Warcraft 3 kind of ruined that atmosphere by introducing a foe everyone must unite against and making Orcs the good, misunderstood guys, but I still loved that game and the Frozen Throne expansion to bits, it struck a nice balance between old and new ideas. And then, the series definitely ended for me. WoW was just too much plot hole-ridden cringe, I just stopped caring about this universe. The ending to the Frozen Throne is THE ending as far as I'm concerned. I miss Warcraft. The pre-WoW Warcraft.

I separate anything past WC2 as different games. Their both good but differnt. Personally, I prefer WC2 atomosphere and have the orcs as evil.

Tbh the lore of wow vanilla was still decent with the exception of adding undead to the horde which makes no sense. From tbc on the lore is a complete joke. I can only see vanilla wow as part of a lore that makes some sense.

I miss pre-War3/WoW Warcraft :) Like you said, Warcraft 3 kind of ruined that atmosphere Warcraft had long time ago. I wish Bli$$ard would be not so much blinded on money only. They love to mess everything up in WoW lore so why not new/another timeline where Warcraft world looks like it was in War1 and War2? War2 remaster would cost them I guess less than 1000$, War2 remake a little more and War4 in old classic style a lot more. Any of these three options would be very cool and something that RTS players would really enjoy. But no, f*ck us, "RTS games are dead", and only mobile trash games are profitable enough to be worth making. Thanks 2023 Bli$$ard.

WC2 is peak Warcraft in terms of atmosphere for me. I loved how evil the orcs were and that the story was focused on war and armies and the factions instead of individual characters like in everything since WC3. WoW jumped the shark years ago, now every other character is a talking animal and the weapons and armor look like plastic toys. That BFA trailer from x years ago reminded me of Narnia, it just looks ridiculous.

Since Tasteless and Day9 got their start with WarCraft 2, that would be a blast from the past of they would play again. Maybe just for old times sake. Not sure about Arty.

Oh man it's nice to revisit these old games. I stayed home sick as a kid when I first bought this game to play it. I got stuck on the shi campaign because I didn't know how to build boats.

Blizzard should make a wc2 patch. Nerf bloodlust instead of double damage. Make it increase damage by 50% and see if that makes hu vs orc more balance.

They can fix it by reducing the mana cost of paladin healing spells by a lot. And to enable auto cast.

@@ajsajs7451 even then it is not quite efficient enough, I believe, even if you give Paladins 1 HP healed per mana spent. if you gave them autocast it wouldnt feel like Warcraft 2 anymore. It would be alot better for sure. this can be tested where HP and damage are reduced proportionally to gain said healing effect in a mod. I played around with that with my Warcraft 2 friends. As said before, I think the consensus was it was still not enough.

Love that you are casting this Tasteless. I was a War2 player. The cheese in this game is unmatched by any other game. The 2v2 is also the best out of any RTS I have played. It is incredible how many different strategies you can do and the battle begins with the first peon.

Cool to see some lesser known older RTS games getting some attention recently. Would love to see Tasteless or Artosis check out Red Alert 3 one day. It's a CNC game from around the same time as SC2, so it's a lot more modern than the very old CNC games that they already tried. It's obviously not nearly as good as SC2 but I followed it a little bit when it was new and there were some interesting pro matches with it. It even had all 3 factions be somewhat balanced at pro level. I guess nowadays you probably need some third party stuff to play it online though.

I never got into rts competetive because im a very competetive person. But I can tell you my apm is fast for a novice rts player. I am not boasting about it but it might be around 100 a little more or less but that's insanely fast for someone who doesn't play rts games often.

Bigger maps, with boats for sc3 can deploy units anywhere along the edge of the water. This reminds me of the Star Wars RTS it was actually really badass I played the heck out of it, I wonder if I can get a CD key for it, tassels have you played it?

@@bevington7054 yeah that looks like the game for some reason my brain thought it looked better than that I played the gun gun race and I remembered it looking crisp with the graphics. I might check it out
