Hear, hear! It’s such a resurrection of a vehicle which was probably not so much abused as disregarded when new, used without mercy in its middle age and properly ignored by its end. What I like about Ben’s selections is that they’re idiosyncratic, that is, not obvious choices. If you consider the range, there are few if any other channels on which even three of Ben’s picks are featured.

BEN the best way I have found to stop weld splatter on my upper body is to find a leather jacket in a charity shop preferably a couple of sizes bigger than you so you have room to move. They can usually be brought for around a tenner, and can last a few years. 😊

I had one of these as a company van in the mid 1990`s. It was amazing what you could get into them, and the two side doors were really useful. The only issue I remember with the van was it had a service interval of 6000 miles which meant I had to take it so a service every 3 or so months. I also used to do some motorway driving as well and shudder to think if I had an accident in it. There was also a flap under the seat which you had to change over where it was summer or winter. I was however glad when they gave me a Bedford Midi van instead.

Re: the horn. There are two types. if the horn has one terminal, the switch/button passes current which energises the horn which is earthed via its mount to the chassis/frame, completing the circuit. If the horn has two terminals, as yours has, the positive wire to the horn is permanently live (sometimes requiring ign on) and the negative wire travels from the horn to the button/switch, which passes the current to earth, completing the circuit. I've only learned this through 20 years of fettling many motorbikes. If you test the switch, you should have voltage coming from the horn on one contact, and a good earth on the other. As long as I'm still breaking things, I'm still learning 😂!

​@JVerschueren I agree there's something screwy with the circuit; most likely the fused live for the feed and the switch for the return. Its not likely relevant, but I have had horns which are polarity sensitive.

That's the best vehicle in the fleet. I was brought up on Tinned sardines, pilchards and mackerel. They are a tremendous on toast, especially the ones in spicy tomato sauce, with a bit black pepper added.

I find putting some ptfe tape around the bleed nipple thread when pulling fluid through otherwise it pulls air from the outside through the thread rather than than the pipe lines. Another great video ben 👍

With regards to the original horn circuit not working, I would say you have a bad connection somewhere. Always test a circuit with a load. A bulb would be ideal. A multimeter might show 12v without a load, but a bad connection with high resistance will not allow any current to flow through the connection, it will basically just fall flat on it's face once you put a load on it. I would check to see if there is a relay for the horn, maybe a bad connection there, or a dodgy relay itself.

No relay on a Rascal horn. All the current goes through stock horn button. Here lies the problem. Fitting a relay would be the answer to keeping stock button. Despite the iffy loom/connections/button, there will be (is) enough current to trigger a relay with horn load coming straight off the battery.

100% green connection somewhere. Using a multimeter on its own can lead you to a mental breakdown 😂😂. As the first comment says use a bulb. If you wanna use a meter you need to see full battery voltage. Eg if the battery is 12.2. You wanna see 12.2. 11.5 or something means there is too much resistance for current to flow. So all you see are the volts.

Hi Ben I saw the repair video for the door step replacement panne now when I bought mine cheap it was of the rust right there on the door shut now I found out by accident that if you take a 6foot metal strip light housing and flatten in strategically placed it gives you near enough the recess you need for door too shut and follies the arch profile now there wasn’t any arch replacement panels when I was doing this trick also traffic light sign made good floor pans lol 😜 ahhhh the days I remember so well xxx love it Royboy in Yorkshire xx

He used to own a second hand shop which sold a lot of books back in the day ironic really with your vans number plate spelling “has book” ideal plate for a library/librarian if there is still such things! In the 90’s when my dad’s transit milk float broke down numerous times, I remember him borrowing a rascal milk float from the dairy a few times. Was a great fun 😂. Also came across a daihatsu hi jet today, very similar to a rascal which had been converted into a mobile coffee stall. All this is making want one myself. Also, great channel, been watching a while and enjoying seeing the channel grow

Nice to see the little van back on the road,I worked in a Vauxhall bodyshop when these were new,painted many of those,mostly front ends as when you hit the brakes hard with an empty van they did tend to just lock all the wheels and bang!lol. They were a popular van with 2 sliding doors and the tailgate, ideal for light but bulky items. Enjoying this series and looking forward to the paint episode.

They’re so small that they’d had to have been perfect for small Italian medieval towns and maybe Japanese cities like Tokyo. I can’t remember the name of the Italian place but it was charming and most roads were tiny and unsuitable for most modern vehicles. The standard delivery van was one of those three wheeled things by Fiat or Piaggio. The Rascal might fit, too!

i remember when i first got into dj'ing as a roadie back in the 80's and the dj brought one of these for the set up we named it the sooty van i remember driving(with only a provisional) it back from gigs a lot as he liked to get hammered its was amazing on how much disco stuff we got in the back with a little gigery pokery buiness he even drove it around for a few months with a clear plastic sheet for a window screen when it broke what great vans these are YOU HAVE TO PUT A HOMMIDGE TO SOOTY SOMEWHER ON THE VAN

Loving your videos, but this one is extra special. Back in the day we had car issues and the wife’s Mum lent her Rascal to us (sky blue), she used it for a dog van not dogging 🤣. Such a fun little thing for buzzing around in. Bit sad as well with the Luton plant where this was born under threat, heart goes out to all those working there and hoping they get a reprieve. There were numerous scenes in plain clothes vehicles, typically Granadas, J, K or L reg early on and P, R or S towards the end of series four. I don’t recall if Ben’s Cortina is too young for late Sweeney. I’m often told it was a truly terrible time but it must depend on where you are in life. I was a teenager, with a job, a motorcycle, a good handful of mates, plenty of pubs & a modest selection of young lady friends 😊

I think your horn and other stalk problems (high beam light etc) are a bad earth somewhere on the steering column or where those wires come from the fuse box - bad earths also stop and cause issues with rear lights so could all be connected to one bad connection. Also contact cleaner should be your go to for any electrical contact cleaning job - I find plus gas can cause you issues on electrics - I know they seem to do a multitude of tasks very well but electrical issues can easily arise and cause you pain trying fault find after using - contact cleaner is great for saving replacing old switches and contacts. You have a great personality and sense of humour Ben - love the show - Top bloke👍🏻

Would you consider that an aerosol can of contact cleaner is similar to carburettor & brake cleaner? I’m aware that they’re different blends because smell different, and the contact cleaner evaporates more rapidly.

Brake cleaner is not good for a lot of electrical cleaning tasks as it is toxic and can damage plastics - great around most other metals and hard materials. I know it evaporates quickly but it is very harsh on sensitive materials and there is nothing as good and effective as contact cleaner and always good to have a can around - it is worth it and lasts a while if you just use it for electrical cleaning 👍🏻

@@g60nick Brake cleaner is just an umbrella term, the actual contents can vary quite a bit. Some of the harsher brake cleaners contain acetone, which can most definitely dissolve plastics. There's also a wide variety of contact cleaners, some of which are quite aggressive and need to be rinsed off after use or they'll degrade the metal they're supposed to clean. In an ideal world you'd remove the contacts to be cleaned, spray them and possibly clean with a glass fibre pen or very fine sandpaper and then rinse with isopropyl alcohol or something similar. If you can't do that, start with the mildest contact cleaner you can get.

i think its redline that do a quick emissions reducer that you add to the fuel system on the day of your test, make sure it's run long enough to work through the full system . also clean filters make quite a difference as can clean oil.i expect you know all that already though.
