I disagree with those saying it’s not “healthy” enough or whatever. Throughout the year in my general cooking I do oil free as well but Christmas is supposed to be decadent and special! If someone wants to omit oil that’s fine but I’m glad your channel is keeping the richness in the special occasion.

Ooo yes! I had a traditional Tortierre once in Quebec and it still sticks in my mind because it was so delicious. I would think maybe a mushroom and lentil combo could work so I’ll definitely put that on my list for next year!

I just found your channel and I’m really enjoying all your holiday recipes. I’ve been missing quiche but I’m allergic to soy. Can you think of anything i could substitute for the tofu to use in your quiche recipe? Thanks for any help!
@TastyThriftyTimely15 күн бұрын
Welcome 👋🏼 I’m glad you’re enjoying our holiday recipes! I actually have a note in the recipe card on the blog for the quiche about making it soy-free! You can try replacing the tofu with 1 1/4 cup unsweetened plant milk and increasing the chickpea flour in the recipe to 2/3 cup. I haven’t tried that version in awhile but other than using a product like “just egg” chickpea flour seems to be the most commonly used ingredient for soy-free vegan quiche. I hope this helps and let me know if you try it!

Thanks for this video! Do you think the French toast and quiche would work with gluten-free bread/crust options?
@TastyThriftyTimely21 күн бұрын
Definitely! Gluten free bread should certainly work for the French toast. I haven’t tried it myself so I’m not sure if it might take a little less or a little more time in the oven to get crispy so just keep a closer eye on it but otherwise I think it should be fine! I also think a 1:1 gluten free flour blend should work well for the crust. Just add the water 1 tbsp at a time so you can get the right hydration for the dough to just come together. Keep me posted if you give them a try!

Your recipes look great, but I dont eat butter. Is there an alternative for your French toast and cookies, especially?
@reneewhite825523 күн бұрын
Plus gravy, mashed potatoes and party mix. Butter substitutes? Do you have an egg nog recipe?😊
@TastyThriftyTimely23 күн бұрын
Hmm for the French toast there is only butter in the drizzle so you could make the custard as is. The drizzle helps the toast to brown more and get crispier but you could probably achieve that by just mixing some maple syrup or even a granulated sugar with those extra spices and drizzling that overtop. The sugar should help the toast to caramelize enough in the oven. The cookies might be a little tougher to achieve the right texture without the butter but you could try using aquafaba (the brine in a can of chickpeas). If the dough is too dry you might just have to add a tablespoon more or so. Let me know if you give either of these a try!
@TastyThriftyTimely23 күн бұрын
I don’t have an egg nog recipe unfortunately! That’s a good one to put on my list though so I’ll keep that in mind for next year! For the gravy the butter contributes to the “roux” which thickens the gravy. I would probably try just omitting the butter and flour and instead combine the broth with the other seasonings and increase the amount of starch (arrowroot or cornstarch). I would think you’ll need at least 1.5 tbsps for the 2 cups of broth. Make sure to whisk the starch with just a bit of broth in a separate bowl until the starch is dissolved and then slowly add that into the gravy, bring to a low boil, simmer for 5 min or so and hopefully it thickens up enough for you. For the mashed potatoes the butter really just contributes to the richness of the flavour so you could use a bit of olive oil if you’d like or just use broth or milk (the flavour won’t be quite as rich but will still be great).
@reneewhite825523 күн бұрын
@TastyThriftyTimely Thank you for all your alternate suggestions. Dr told me no oil or butter for health reasons. Think I could use aquafaba in the party mix? I'll definitely let you know how the recipes turn out with your suggestions. Love your videos. Keep them coming, please!
@TastyThriftyTimely23 күн бұрын
Oh right the party mix I’m sorry I forgot that one! I think you could use some aquafaba to mostly just help the other seasonings coat the cereal etc. I think 1/2 cup would probably be too much though. I wouldn’t want the water content in the aquafaba to make the cereal too soggy. I probably would try 1/4 cup max. You could just add dry seasonings to the mix and toast everything in the oven but I think you should be ok to use some aquafaba with the other seasonings. I’m sorry I haven’t tried it myself! I do hope some of these work arounds turn out well for you!

Those turtles... mon dieu! 😀Out of curiosity, have the cost of ingredients for any of these recipes gone either up or down since you initially made these videos? Can imagine the passage of time and economic factors can affect things, a little...
@TastyThriftyTimely21 күн бұрын
Haha ya those are pretty delicious! And yes the costs do fluctuate of course but at least the cost of the store-bought or traditional versions of these things also increases so the spread stays about the same. I’ve also found that some ingredients end up decreasing a bit and others increase so most haven’t had huge swings in price.
@blofeld3921 күн бұрын
@@TastyThriftyTimely Have you got a list made of what has and hasn't gone up? Like, I suppose, from "most-increased" to "no increase", or something like that? These holiday recipes are certainly more indulgent than our regular weekly meals as they are not foods we eat all the time. We do eat gluten as we are not intolerant to it and we do have starches and less refined sugars. There may be some here that you can alter to fit your diet and if you have any questions about any particular recipe I can try to offer suggestions.
@anavik953523 күн бұрын
Unfortunately I don't make your recipes even they look good! You are using way to much oil, butter and coconut milk!!!
@TastyThriftyTimely22 күн бұрын
That’s fair. These holiday recipes are certainly more indulgent and not the recipes we make on a weekly basis. We have a lot of oil-free recipes you might like if you haven’t seen the videos for those. You might love my seed cracker recipes which are great for platters around the holidays. We have a sweet potato bread that is oil-free, refined sugar-free and made with whole wheat flour! I have plenty more sauces, dips, cookies, granola, soups, and even main dishes that are oil-free or very easy to adapt by just sautéing with water or broth instead of a dash of oil for instance. I’ll put together an oil-free and very WFPB friendly playlist in the new year so that those recipes don’t get lost in the mix. I certainly strive to limit all those things in my day to day cooking so hopefully you’ll be able to find some recipes you’ll want to try. 🙂

@@TastyThriftyTimely That's a really great way to respond, I think. 🙂I know some people would get mad at that. I really appreciate your addressing them and informing them like that.

I am oil free and will try some of these recipes while supplementing some of the ingredients to fit my diet. I went vegetarian 35 years ago and then vegan 9 years ago. I am gluten free and oil free. I have learned to make substitutions! If I were making this for family though, I would likely use the more indulgent foods. It is hard to impress my non plant based friends and family and I want them to see how delicious and effortless it is to be vegan. I can be more indulgent once or twice a year. The content on this channel is amazing! You truly have something to learn here and shouldn't dismiss it so quickly.
@TastyThriftyTimely19 күн бұрын
Thank you so much for adding your own experience here. I agree that there’s some value to indulging a bit when hosting non plant forward eaters and demonstrating that it can be easy and delicious! Once you’ve switched your eating habits it’s easier to not miss oil or extra sugar etc but I found that it does take a little bit of time to get there.
