This is the third of the six partitas wich bach collected in 1731 as the first part of the "Klavierübung." They had been published separately since 1726. In Bach's own handwriting. The version included in the notebook from Anna Magdalena Bach is not quite identical with the printed one (the one we are listening here). The printed edition includes a Scherzo before the gigue, and calls the Prelude "Fantasia" and the minuet "Burlesca".

Always wondered no 5. "Burlesca". Is this Bach' s humour?

Tatiana surpasses Gould in the Wohltemperierte clavier for her sensitivity and expressivity but as far as the partitas or the suites Gould cannot be matched in clarity, mechanical beauty and unfailing precision and singing tone. When Gould visited Russia, Tatiana heard him. Those two musicians are complementary they excell in different ways. They are the only two Bach piano performers i listen to.

goognam goognws I also enjoyed Richter for unparalleled intellect, phrasing, and wisdom in reading Bach, but you are right, Nikolayeva and Gould are sublime

I like how nikolayeva brings out the different characters of the dance. Gould seems to lack some of the colours she can bring to the piano maybe Gould’s counterpoint is slightly better. They have very different styles. I feel like they both have great clarity of touch and singing tone. Gould plays more masculine, and Tatiana more feminine.

@@jordansparks6113 Your first sentence resumes what drew me to Tatianna. She is able to give each voices more of an independent phrasing and color of their own in continuity without violating the flow of the piece, very much as if it was a chamber music ensemble but with each musician having his own personality. So you can have one feeling from one voice while an another voice is entirely different in character. This is more easily done with a legato style of playing which indeed is her style. While Gould's pianism approach is percussive with each pearly note separated from the next and his playing is better for showing the architecture and contrapuntal beauty of the piece but without variety in color. Tatianna might be accused of playing baroque music in a romantic style but i don't accept that criticism. Their approaches are radically different but both valid. You can tell where each method reaches a limit, for Tatianna in the rare virtuoso passages the legato style poses technical problems loosing a bit of definition. While for Glen the lack of color and absent legato makes slower passages drab and syncopated. Tatianna has more spiritual qualities in revealing the essence of the music, in fact she reveals so much more music when so many of today's supposedly star pianists don't even understand the bare minimum in Bach sensibility. I can literally hear one on the radio and find at every four bar that he/she does not understand what should be understood at 4 years old. Gould is more transcendental and masculine, he plays purely with contrapuntal balance. That approach gives life to the music.

Это Великолепное исполнение Великой пианистки! Душа поёт и радуется. Браво Татьяна! Очень красивые комментарии написаны профессионалами ,но считаю не корректным сравнение двух совершенно индивидуальных пианистов.

This is the overlooked stepchild of Bach's grand set of six. The other five are often done by themselves, but not this. Listen for the "bad composing" in the Burlesca, a little like what Mozart did in his "Musical Joke".

Yes, Gould's Bach is amazing. Arguably, the best. But this is superb. Not in any way inferior, albeit different.

I thought the Fantasia (Prelude) should be slow and expressive, not staccato, but it sounds good this way. The Gigue, contrary, I would like presto. Ooops, the Sarabande (lovely Chopinesque haha) she has "praller" wrong, can't believe it, it's basic stuff: when you come from the tone above you go down on main note, but if you come from another tone (higher,/lower) you begin "praller" on the tone above (the upper trill-note). Anyway, lovely.

The pitch is slightly sharp, as is usually the case with Russian recordings. Too bad you could not correct it, as the tempo is also affected as a result.

I wish something less sophisticated, and she's not the only one who add too much interpretation to Bach, therefore Gould's rebellion... This is completely wrong, the Sarabande for example, sounds like Chopin, ie, romantic. This shouldn't be, at least here. The 6th partita, ok,
