tbh i thought fujimoto's works were too bleak for me but as more of his works have been adapted and my exposure to them has grown, i recognize that he truly has hope. and believes that people can overcome the horrors (god, the horrors)--at, perhaps, great cost--but there is an undeniable optimism buried underneath that uncomfortable grit. people should strive to live, for even the smallest reasons. i appreciate you talking about his work in this way! it allows me to appreciate the artistry of his paneling and his skills as a visual storyteller in a deeper way than i think i allow myself to since i can only read his works once in a while.

I loved goodbye eri, so emotional, it directly examines the sheer complexity of people and their emotions, with the main character seemingly running from his problems, the complexities of his relationship with his mother, with eri, it's all so inspiring from the perspective of another creator, and insightful as a person who doesn't quite understand and pick up on emotion.

i’ve read goodbye eri, look back, and chainsaw man. his works (out of what i read) feel so emotional in a way yet it’s like i’ve been sucked dry of my tears. i feel the emotions in his works want to cry but just can’t almost similar to many of the character’s emotions in a way. uh my analysis sucks but i hope you get what i mean thanks

i had to pause this video right as soon as you started describing Goodbye, Eri to go find and read it. i read the entire thing in one sitting over my dinner and then finished your video. fujimoto is an absolute fuckin master of his craft. i've never read manga like his before. his work is what i have fever dreams about, in the way that they've been what ive been looking for in stories my whole life, what ive dreamt of creating myself for most of my life, and what my dreams very literally feel like. i can tell how much he loves what he does in every page. i CANNOT get over how he portrays characters moving through the spaces he creates, especially in Goodbye, Eri. i have legitimately never read a manga like this one before. not even his own other works feel quite like this one to me. youve hit the nail on the head with this vid and your analysis. thank you so much for reminding me that ive needed to read this one shot. im so, so glad your video came across my sidebar. i feel like this oneshot changed me life imitates art, art (film) creates reality, and i need to create to keep living in my reality. thats what Goodbye Eri felt like to me, and i feel the same for myself

this is the first of fujimoto's works that I actually read, and the way it played with reality and metatextuality was so interesting-- i told myself i needed to ruminate on it and reread it later, but never got around to it, so this is a good reminder/revisiting!!!! and now i've read a couple volumes of chainsaw man and can really see why people resonate with his storytelling and art. this is such a fun video! and the flourishes on your part were delightful!

The complaints about the adaptation of Chainsaw Man reminded me of the criticism that drowned out and buried the anime of Flowers of Evil. In my opinion, a panel-by-panel adaptation of a manga in anime form is often superfluous, because it adds nothing to the original material. When, on the other hand, an anime tries to exploit the innate and exclusive potential of the medium, and tries to do something more, or different - that's where it elevates itself and becomes both "equal and different" to its source. In the case of Flowers of Evil, the estrangement generated by the rotoscope scenes was a perfect mirror of the unease and sense of disconnection from reality of the story's protagonists, and as such it was a very apt choice. Thanks for this video, and for the food for thought!

Chainsaw Man show's art style was what made it stand out to me while watching it; its beautiful atmosphere and thoughtful camera shots were what drew me in and kept me watching (Aki's morning routine and his flashbacks to Himeno come to mind). I think it truly elevated its source material and is a testament to the art of adaptation. There is a video about CM's opening song and how it said that Japanese songwriters don't limit themselves to genres as much, which is what made the music so good. I think the same about the CM's stylistic allusion towards the author's love of western cinema making it stand out amongst other anime. The show truly inspired me to look at animation and film from a different perspective. Its a shame that the director got bullied for his creative decision and I hope the style doesn't change in the later seasons. btw I started watching your videos from your Dungeon Meshi series. As an aspiring animator (I'm going to school for it this september) I loved to watch your breakdowns of the episodes as they came out, not only for their useful info, but your touches of humor and personality that made it fun. Can't really articulate more than that, but it gives voice to something that's been bubbling around in the back of my brain for a while, both why I find Fujimoto's off-kilter perspective so compelling, and some feelings about the relationship of art and reality in general, I'm serious, this is really good work, and I hope more people see it. yeah there was a small but very vocal contingent of manga readers who absolutely despised the more realistic direction. There's always going to be some of that with an adaptation, but it was bigger and louder than usual. I can kind of get it, in that it *is* a very distinctive stylistic choice and it's hardly the first thing that would come to mind when reading the manga. But it preserves and enhances all of my favorite parts of the manga, so I can sit on my high horse and say all the people who are mad are just that brand of super-fan who totally misses the point of what they're a fan of.

The fact you have Twinkle Nora Rock Me in the upper monitor there is so cursed. I love the idea that the whole point of Goodbye, Eri is to set up a deeply emotional situation only to have it end in the most absurd way, just to continue that on into the next series of events to lead to the same absurd ending. I like the idea of reading the story not as two separate movies, but a single movie ABOUT making two separate movies. That the whole thing is a single narrative connected by the idea of movies manifesting reality, and also explosions. It's like the whole thing is meant to be an elaborate prank on the reader.

Its strange but shows us the limitation of ourselfs in that sense there are many ways to perceive the World and we can shape it as well.

Heyyy love to have you back with more peak content ❤ I had a tough time with Goodbye Eri. It is an amazing work of art, but I think I made a mistake reading it online. It just didn't feel, you know, real. And that went into not being able to enjoy the story that much. If I had read it as a physical page-turning book I think I would have liked it more, and it saddens me that I can never get that experience of reading it blind again. And part of me doesn't care, coz I didn't enjoy it as much as I think I should have. Alas, I'm rambling.

fantastic video about a fantastic one-shot. I also agree that trying to get too literal with what exactly is happening at the end, which parts are real and which ones are film, is missing the point. But my main takeaway from the final sequence is less about film creating reality (though that's certainly a part of it as "objective" records can shape our memories) and more about how authentic creations can help people process grief but also what "authenticity" really means. His first film is his own, and it's terrible. It failed to express what he wanted it to except to an extremely niche audience (of two people). But still, it was his, and making it helped him process his feelings on his mother's passing. His second film was Eri's. It was trying to capture his interpretation of her interpretation of what was good about the first one, while mimicking the styles and practices of other movies. It was better, from a film perspective. People liked it enough, and they broadly got what he was going for. Making it taught him so much about making a good movie. But it wasn't his movie. It was Eri's movie. And so, in making it, he didn't get any closer to processing her death. That's why he keeps trying to re-edit it over and over again, trying to recreate the catharsis of his first film, but always it's Eri's. It's him trying to replicate what *she* saw in the first film. The things he put in because he liked them and they felt right, interpreted and regurgitated. Then there's finally the third film, and it's his again. He's not exploding the building because it adds "a pinch of fantasy," he's doing it because it's what he wants to do, and it's what feels right. And that second movie? Eri's movie? It wasn't a waste at all. Because he *did* learn a lot making it. He learned so much that now, even though the ending is so similar to that of the first movie, it works. Some of the power and the emotion that went into it fully comes across to the viewer. He made something that was both authentic and powerful and, hopefully, immortalizes the people in it in the way he wants them to be remembered. That was just my reading of it, though. I really like Goodbye Eri. It's such a rich array of themes presented extremely well.

Tho Fujimoto's works are certainly not the best of their kind in any way, not close even, they definitely have a strong and unique philosophical identity to them which I wholly appreciate. Its the same with Goodbye Eri and Look Back, which are still the strongest works of Tatsuki imo. I think Fire Punch was absolutely amazing in what it did well, and very lacking in what it fell short on miserably, ie, the constant stream of missed opportunities and unnecessarily introduced plot points for a couple chapters throughout the series. CSM P1 had a very similar problem, but worse and with lower quality. Dont get me wrong ,its still 88/100 on a BAD day, and 92 on the best, but what I mean is that CSM P2 is the kind of emotional and literary maturity Ive wanted from Fujimoto since the beginning of Fire Punch and CSM. Im very happy with Fujimoto as a mangaka. I think he has one of the strongest identities in our current era.

The person she was before is dead, and the only trace of her is in Yuta's film, even if that was a fake Eri. However, that film version of Eri became real when the new Eri watched the movie. Does it shape the new Eri's self as well? Very fun comic and video!

The CSM undeserved hate reminds me of two similar incidents: One is with the GHOST IN A SHELL movie adaptation where the Japanese fans hated the semi-realistic interpretation of the director (but it was well-received in the West thus it boosted its popularity). The other is the liberties done with the rom-com series HIS AND HERS CIRCUMSTANCES (same director of NEON GENESIS EVANGELION) where the mangaka expressed her disappointment on how her material was portrayed.

Goodbye Eri is a masterpiece any author would be proud of; to have it be just one title in the list of several career-defining works Fujimoto had written by the time he turned 30 is borderline unthinkable. You have to be a genius to be this good this early in your career. As for the Chainsaw Man adaptation, you've touched upon the important aspect that online discussions usually mention but don't give it due focus: it's how Fujimoto manipulates the tone of the narrative and how the adaptation, well... chooses not to. There are very few authors whose work I wholeheartedly respect who have mastered the very advanced art of mixing the drama with the comedy, the tragedy with the levity, and most of all switching between then at will and at the drop of the hat. Fujimoto is one of them, and Chainsaw Man works so well in the written form because he has the reader in his palm the entire time and knows not to overload them with the numerous heavy elements of the narrative without defusing them regularly. Nakayama's approach could've worked in principle (I blame his directorial inexperience), but the fact that the adaptation maintains a somber, serious tone almost the entire time really changes how the whole narrative is framed. When I'm reading the manga, I'm experiencing a lot of vivid emotions; I cry at the sad scenes and I laugh at the funny ones. The anime somehow managed to make almost all of the funny scenes profoundly unfunny-and the sad ones also lost some of the impact consequently, because instead of taking you from an emotional high point to a low one, they take you from a low point just a bit lower. There are other things I wasn't a fan of in the adaptation, but if I were to name only one, this would be the most damning. It shouldn't have been this way-anime is a much richer medium with many more tools at its disposal to make me feel things, so if it fails to live up to the manga, then clearly something is wrong. Btw, have you watched Mawaru Penguindrum? It's a series by Kunihiko Ikuhara of Revolutionary Girl Utena fame, and I was in complete disbelief at the cinematography on display there. There are series that are fluidly animated and creatively storyboarded, but what Penguindrum does with every aspect of its presentation: editing, framing, coloring, etc., is just unreasonable for anime. Give the first episode a watch, and you'll immediately get what I'm talking about. I'm absolutely sure you'll get completely hooked by the end of the episode. :)

i completely agree with you, and another thing that bothered me from the adaptation, including the ones you said before, it's the lack of color. when you see the covers for the volumes and the art in general, it's easy to imagine something more saturated, mor re raw even in the expresions of the line, but in the anime it's all pale and there is no feelings in the lines in the strokes.

I mean...Fujimoto is JUST SO WEIRD. But he is one of the more interesting mangaka working today, kinda like love for the cat obsessed Spiraling into madness horror master we all know and fear...hopefully the Uzumaki anime is good. And yet...the Chainsaw man Anime isn't bad...not perfect, but an interesting adaptation. While I would prefer a more absurd, FLCL like vibe, the actually story is executed well, the characters are pitch perfect in appearance, animation and voice...its just a little off, maybe needing just a little more time to cook. Overall, its still good, just not the great anime we all hoped for. No way we're ever getting a Fire Punch anime though, that shit would be banned on television, that would have to go on Amazon or something.
