ACTUALLY ABOUT THE DWARF BEARD THING. We see young Senshi spend multiple consecutive days as a youngster, but he never grows any beard hair in that days-long period! This means that Laios' lack of beard hair reflects dwarf hair growing SLOWER then tallmen hair! Chillchuck most likely just grew his beard normally, with Ryoko Kui deciding to exagerate a little to avoid a character design existing for an awkward amount of time. also Dwaf hair growing really slowly would explain why its such an important thing to dwarf culture. It takes almost a decade to grow one like Senshi has, albeit a messy one.

Senshi has been in dungeon for something like 100 years! He only said 10 years when he first met the party because he'd lost track of time. Hes about 30 when the dungeon is first discovered but hes over 100 when he meet Laois' party, so he's been down there an insanely long time!

Personally I think it's that Chilchuck's peach fuzz converted into raspy shadow when he transformed, while Laios' shaved face stayed shaved, but it'd make sense if different races grew hair at different rates too.

My favorite scene of the episode - and one of the best in the anime - is absolutely that last anime-original view from outside the trolley, through the window, as the party descends one by one for their meal, with the narration restating and recontextualizing the main theme of the series introduced in the first episode. "Eat or be eaten, for eating is the sole privilege of the living". Thank you so much, these videos have really made this whole journey, this half a year so special. Enjoy your break, and see you again later!

IT'S CALLED THE MOUTH OF TRUTH and it's a ancient roman statue, which is said to bite the hand off any liar who puts their hand in its mouth, which further enhances the dumplings transformation. i believe it's somewhat famous in the east, since it shows up occasionally in anime and another thing, IT'S CALLED A FUNICULAR AND THEY'RE AWESOMe even though i've never ridden on one. it lends a sense of simultaneous movement and rest- the party is physically still, but they also finally formulate a solid plan for their descent and how to deal with Falin

Thanks again for these breakdowns, they really helped appreciate this adaptation more. I'll be sticking around for your next projects! Fun thing I noticed: I think the opening animation hinted at that last episode by having them free-fall and hold hands in a circle! I think it's more than just a coincidence, because they are also holding the hands in the same order when they defeat the golem (with Marcille flanked by Laios and Chil, and Izutsumi holding Laios and Senshi's) It all comes full circle! 😉

A little anime-only detail I really liked in this episode is the part where Izutsumi folds her ears down as she attempts to block out the conversation happening and go back to sleep, it’s very relatable as someone who’s been in similar situations. I also really like the similarly anime-only detail of how one of her ears gets bent at an angle because it’s resting against Marcille’s head while she’s comforting Marcille against her will, it adds a lot to emphasizing the physical closeness of that moment. Thank you so much for doing this series! This has been one of the things I’ve looked forwards to each week regarding the series, with the others being the actual episode releases and then streaming them for friends, and I’m just as sad that I won’t be watching one of your videos each week as I am that I won’t be watching a new dungeon meshi episode each week. I’m eagerly looking forwards to whatever you do next!

7:50 one thing i also liked about this shot was the framing of the shape of the sword in front of laios' face, hiding everything but his eyes and his hair, you can almost forget hes still a dwarf in this shot, you could almost perceive it as regular tall-man laios when you cant see the rounded dwarf face shape. the purest laios-shaped essence. and it reminds me of that one page in daydream hour where kui drew all the characters eyes+eyebrows without the context of the rest of the face, to show how she made a point to design those features in such a way as to always be able to tell exactly whom each set belonged to without the rest of the characters features. god of character design, she is

It probably has already been mentioned somewhere in the comments, but the transformations of the gargoyles seem to be based on famous statues (/manhole covers) 1. The plate with a face on it looks a lot like the "Bocca della Verità" (english "mouth of truth"), which is located in Rome and quite the tourist attraction. There's a myth about it biting off the hands of liars (or people who lie while having their hand in its mouth). It is an ancient Roman artificact, which might have been used as a drain cover. 2. The statue looks a lot like the "Manneken Pis" (english "little peeing man"), which is located in Brussels and is one of the cities most famous landmarks. It is not nearly like the other one, being only about 500 years old. Furthermore also isn't made of stone in real life, but cast from bronze. Funnily enough they dress it up in different clothes on a regular basis.

In the latest radio show of DM, director Miyajima reveals that he has been a fan of DM since the start of manga 10 years ago. And the tendency to follow manga panel closely is also kinda personal per conversation(s) he had with Kui during production went like this: Kui: *points at certain scenes* Wouldn't adjusting this works better animation-wise? At the end of this episode with our crews plan set, my mind couldn't help wonder to my favorite show of all time, specifically it's finally season and a rhyming themed episode, I'm probably the only one who was singing this in there head while hearing that speech. (Robin takes the cake) How I Met Your Mother "You're robin and your half a cake away from glory! If you quit now then Simon wins, the tale comes to a stop at how you saw an ex, freaked out, and robbed a pastry shop. If you have the guts my dear then it's time to get empowered and be remembered for this sweet behemoth you devoured, and years from now the troubadour will rise his voice and sing of the time robin took the cake And ate.... The whole.... Dammed... Thing."

I like that the Anime had Falin finish the job of healing Laios' leg that Marcille started. She doesn't like that there was an injury she couldn't help him with.

I like how you completely glossed over **that** shot of Marcille. You know the one.

I’ve loved this series so much, so excited to sit down and watch this later! Not sure your next plans (sorry if you end up mentioning) but I’d LOVE to see a wrap up video with final impressions or maybe even favorite moments from the season. Your break downs of the animation have given me even MORE appreciation for a thing I already love and I appreciate the highlights on specific artists styles and work. It’s been cool taking that knowledge and looking at different scenes not mentioned and deducing the animators or how they are achieving an effect, etc. Thanks so much for all your work on this series! Hope to see you continue this when the next season airs :)

I honestly think its because Liaos shaves every night, whereas Chilchuk never shaves, so Liaos becomes a shaven dwarf and Chilchuk becomes a five-o-clock shadow man
