I thought the way ninjutsu works is you reveal the creature from your hand that your ninjutsuing in. So technically you’d look at the top three and put one in your hand before you put satoru back in your hand and the other creature on the field

I learned this recently as I started to make my Satoru deck. Ill try to explain everything like a play by play. Satoru is declared as an attacker and unblocked Player ninjutsu creature onto battlefield and places Satoru in hand Creature deals damage. Satoru does not trigger because he is in your hand by this point. Basically, ninjutsu happens after opponent declares blockers, but resolved before damage. 8:46 Satoru doesn't trigger off himself because he needs to be on the field when the ability activates after costs. Since the return is a cost, if he is returned and in hand then he doesn't see the ability activate and doesn't get a card. This is relevant especially at 10:30 because he was only bounced for getting the value off the draw ability and thief could have been cast normally.

It actually works to trigger his ability returning himself, this is the same way death triggers work. If he wouldn't trigger all death triggers would not work at all.

@@ScorpioneOrzion The permanents with death trigger abilities are on the battlefield when they activate or trigger. Returning Satoru to your hand is part of the cost for ninjutsu. He will not be on the battlefield to see it activate and wont trigger is ability to look at cards on the top of your library if you bounce him for a ninjutsu ability is what I'm saying. Costs are paid, then the ability goes on the stack. Since he wouldn't be on the battlefield anymore, he wont see the ninjutsu ability on the stack and therefore wont trigger his card draw ability.

I decided to build Satoru, and tbh he's really fun. I tried building Olivia the set before but she was always falling short, so I tried building Satoru with the same kind of strategy (cheating in big creatures) and it just does it so well it's amazing

Hinata is very powerful with those 3 cards, once people know what's coming, it will be quite hard to do anything. So far the best build I have seen, good win. Great frog with shrines too

I built my Hinata deck based around making big tokens with casting high cmc spells or having other good effects like Zeffai, Thunder Conductor. Now after seeing the artifact storm and I feel like I made a mistake lol

I hadn't had much experience with the new build so mistakes happened. I apologize if it hindered the gameplay, but I will try my best next time!

Small mistake - Yuriko doesn't have ninjutsu - she has commander ninjutsu, so Satoru doesn't trigger from her, I believe.

Commander ninjutsu is a variant of ninjutsu and considered a ninjutsu ability for effects like Satoru and Silver-Fur Master. This is the same reason why multikicker works with cards like Verazol, Coralhelm Chronicler, Hallar, etc. We appreciate you looking out for gameplay mistakes. @@zrinkobaricevic642 Oooh a curveball. I decided to doublecheck with another judge just to be sure. They confirmed it should work as stated, quoting 702.49d in the comprehensive rules that states commander ninjutsu is a variant. It does look like if Satoru isn't triggering off Yuriko then it's an MTGO bug. I found a gameplay video where Satoru indeed isn't triggering but haven't found any bug reports of this. MTGO is often buggy but it's still weirdly reliable for these types of interactions, so there's a chance I'm just wrong here. Time to go pick the brains of some WotC employees on twitter haha

A lot of people correctly pointing out that Satoru doesn't trigger when bouncing himself, but also worth mentioning, Satoru doesn't trigger off of Yuriko's ability because Yuriko specifically has Commander Ninjutsu, which is distinct from Ninjutsu

Hinata seems like one of those decks you play once or twice, see it’s way too strong and probably take it apart. That deck really doesn’t look that fun to play either, it’s soooo incredibly reliant on the commander being out

@@drazi3356 well first, yes, Urza is not fun lol Second, Satoru is a deck that still plays redundant ninjas, it’s not like the deck is ONLY creatures that aren’t ninjas. If it was then I would say yes, that’s not very good and without your commander I don’t think the deck will play very well. But Ninjitsu as a strategy can absolutely work without the commander Hinata doesn’t really have redundancy, there are very little if any effects that do what Hinata does. Without her on the battlefield you have a mass of X spells in your hand that instantly get much worse without her reduction. I personally don’t build decks to be too reliant on the commander being out. Especially a commander like this where everyone knows how good it is and will be gunning to kill it and your deck is then effectively turned off since that ability is so rare

@@jollygreenjackson5787 well ya without the commander you have a sub par deck with yuriko. Same with hinata. Without her you have sub par spells. In this game you have to protect your assets. I play a few decks that rely on the commander but i dont play them until i can protect. Hinata can do that wonderfully. She also kinda protets herself with the taxes. Same with urza. Tell me what an urza can do without urza on board. All the artfacts are just bad without him. Whatcha gonna do? counter stuff and winter orb yourself?

@@drazi3356 I don’t totally agree with that first sentiment. If you’re playing a ninja deck and you have other ninjas in your main deck and aren’t JUST doing maskwood nexus shenanigans, then getting a ninja in is still not a bad play. That is a deck that can be played to an effect without the commander. Whereas IMO commanders like Hinata or even Prosper for example are decks so insanely reliant on the commander being out that you have to use up deck slots for just protection or you aren’t having a good game. Those commanders don’t interest me at all much when it’s a glass cannon type strategy is all I’m saying. Also can’t comment on the urza stuff, if a winter orb is being played im at the wrong table
