I have been trying to learn shuttle tatting for over 20 years. I never got the hang of it until I watched your videos. I gave up trying for so long because I never thought I'd manage it. Thank you so much for helping me learn this beautiful craft!!! I'm working on this edging right now. It isn't perfect, but it's mine, made from my own two hands!!!

Thank you so much , you are an excellent teacher! When I was a student nurse ( back in the days of matrons, starched caps and aprons!) a fellow student taught me how to tat, and I took to it easily. Recently , 46 years later, I came across the shuttle she gave me , but couldn’t remember how to tat. Having seen other tutorials I just couldn’t get the hang of it .... until I found you ! Ending the round would be simple: you would just need to make sure you join the very last ring on both sides (to the previous ring and also to the very first ring of the round) and then join the last chain at the beginning, back where you started. I'll put your idea on my list though, if you think a video would be helpful. :-)

Tucking in the ends is a thought that occurs as I am in the middle of tatting. I have tried the magic loop (no luck) and also a knot. I believe I need more practice.

Many thanks for doing all your videos for beginner tatting. I tried tatting over 30 years ago from books but never got the hang of it so put the shuttle to one side and got on with lots of other fibre crafts. However the other day your tatting videos grabbed my attention and, after lots of rummaging in my stash, I found my shuttle and threads and settled down to watch you. After several attempts I have made this edging but my hands haven't got used to holding the threads in my left hand yet! I don't have very bendy fingers it seems! Hi Nancy, apologies for the late reply! If you look up "Aero tatting shuttle", you should find shuttles with hooks. That's the kind I use although I modify and decorate mine (I regularly have some for sale in my Etsy shop, should you be interested: www.etsy.com/uk/shop/lacossette). There are other brands with hooks but sometimes the tension can be a problem.

Very glad to hear it's clicking into place for you! You could tat each piece to the measurement which means they would have a neat edge but you can cut tatting. Although if you cut in the middle of a ring or chain, it would unravel. So cutting between elements would be best; you could tie the ends where you have cut or add a tiny dab of glue where you have cut so it doesn't unravel or make sure the ends of the lace are incorporated into a seam of the garment would be another solution.

Hello, I'm sure you'll get there with a bit more practice! For tatting, yes, a crochet thread would work. I use a specific tatting thread in most of my videos (usually Lizbeth) but a crochet thread would work too, as long as it's smooth and tightly twisted so that your knots slide nicely.

Hello! Thank you for your video! I’m getting a little confused with the rings though..I can’t get past doing the second ring - I use the shuttle thread, but then when I go to pull to tighten the ring in then left with a long loop of thread hanging from the bottom, it won’t let me pull from the shuttle side as that’s the thread I’ve used to make the knots! I’ve tried and tried again but I keep getting stuck at this point! Could you please clarify which thread to use to make the rings and which end I pull to tighten the ring?? Thank you again🥰

Hello, sorry you've having trouble completing this pattern, it's not easy for me to advise without actually seeing what you are doing but all rings are to be made only with the thread that comes from the shuttle. The chain is made using the ball thread combined with the shuttle thread but the rings are made only with the shuttle and its thread. If your stitches are flipped correctly, the thread that comes from your shuttle becomes the core thread and the stitches you are making are "flipped" onto it and then you pull on the thread attached to the shuttle to close the ring. Ok, yes, ideally, you would wind yourself a couple of bobbins full before you start so you won't have to cut your ball thread (something I should have mentioned as the beginning of this video!) but as you have already started, you will need to cut your ball thread so you can use it to refill your shuttle (unless you have a second ball of the same thread?). Do you have two shuttles? If you do, I would unwind a good amount of thread from the ball before cutting it and wind that onto a second shuttle. You can then use your ball to refill your shuttle and then rejoin your thread. Hello, yes I think this would be a good choice to go on a round napkin but I would probably make the bottom rings smaller. You would need to experiment a bit but start by removing a couple of stitches from each ring (say 5-4-4-5, instead of 5-5-5-5) and see it it starts to curve. If not remove another couple of stitches and try 4-4-4-4. Good luck!

Hello Anna, have you seen my beginner's video on how to transfer the knot? Usually if a ring doesn't tighten up it's because one or more of the knots have not flipped correctly and therefore does not slide on the core thread to enable you to close the ring.

Hi Myrany, there are actually several different ways to add thread depending on circumstances, where you are in your pattern, whether you are using one shuttle or two... but basically you knot your new thread to your old and continue tatting, hiding the loose end into your first few stitches but there are also ways to do it without knots. Hello, I'm sorry but I do not know the answer to your question as I've not made this for a whole handkerchief (only the sample you see in this video) but this wouldn't require a lot of thread. The only thing I can suggest if you want to get a better idea is for you to tat a sample of it (say a couple of repeats), see how much thread it takes, and then measure how many repeats you need to go around your hanky and multiply the amount of thread by the number of repeats.

I know how to make the basic stitch but I can't tell when you make the picot if you are using the first half of the stitch or the second or something different. Are you moving the shuttle under and back over like the first half or over and back under like the second half or something else?

Hello Larisa, the picot is made by leaving a space between two full stitches; so you would complete one double stitch, then leave a space as you make the first half of the next stitch and then complete with the second half.

If you're just making rings and chains, you can use a shuttle and ball. If you're making reverse direction chains or rings thrown off the chains, then you'll need two shuttles.

Hi Anne, you could certainly tat this straight onto fabric if you wished. Where there is a picot on the chain, you would join onto the fabric there (pre-pierced holes are really helpful for this).

Hello Rozida, there are different methods but I do it by hand. Sometimes I use a crochet edge around the hanky first and also attach with the crochet into the edging but most of the time I will use small hand stitches. I am finishing an edging now so I will try to make a new video that shows how I do it.

Hi Genevieve, that's normal because the knots are made with the thread that is wrapped around your left hand. You need to stop and "feed" more thread into the loop around your left hand when it gets too small.

Why does closing the ring on the second round always not close completely and the chain always balls up and I can't get it to close. I have watched the video over and over and feel like I am following the directions but I cannot get thru the second ring. What am I doing wrong?

Hello, I do have other videos on my channel that explain the stitches and this video is part of a series for beginners which includes videos that demonstrate how to make the stitches as well as videos of easier motifs and designs that can be accomplished by new tatters.

@@11Frivole Perhaps consider adding "Part X" if it is part of a series. That way when An Actual Beginner looks for beginning tutorials they will know to start on a different video.
