If you actually want to prepare and make your upcoming tattoo session much more pleasant for you and the artist, drink lots of water, get a good night's rest and eat something beforehand. It truly makes the tattoo hurt less, especially in the later hours, and since you're not wincing and tensing up, the artist has a way easier time. Plus you have nourished, hydrated skin. If I'm getting tattooed longer than two hours, I always bring at least a liter of water, a bag of fun sized Snickers (simple sugars and a protein source are great for maintaining energy and morale during physical stress) and refrain from drinking alcohol the night before. Get drunk afterwards. Your tattoo artist is also going to need sugar to maintain focus for that long. Making art is really taxing on the brain. Bring enough candy to share with the staff at the shop, assuming other artists are going to stop in and say hello. Since you're hydrated, happy and not in a world of pain, you can have a nice conversation and potentially make a new friend. I've been getting tattooed by the same two friends over the past ten years, so unwrapping and placing a candy in their mouth while they're maintaining a sterile work environment is funny and very bromantic.

All very true though I have always associated 'trendy' tattoos more with the 90's: Tramp stamps, barbed wire, tribal, the dolphin on the ankle and of course Chinese scripture... There's definitely still a 'trend fad' going on in the tattoo world helped along by social media platforms like Instagram but I also think it's getting much more versatile again because of the internet.

My artist did an amazing cover up on me with no laser and two large, dark tattoos. He initially told me lightening them by 50% would really open up my options, but that if I was okay with limited options, he could do it. I couldn't be more obsessed with what I ended up with. We turned it into a sleeve that's been photographed for a magazine and that he used for an ad. :)

I think trendy tattoos are alright to an extent, something small and subtle or hidden can be a memento of nostalgia. I wouldn't recommend people get fidget spinners & shit like that tattoo'd on their forehead but even something ridiculous as a fidget spinner somewhere subtle can be a reminder of a past point in time for people in the future. Get what you want, though I always recommend sleeping on any tattoo design.
@KaylahDemi6 жыл бұрын
Schwifty I had a tattoo idea that I thought I wanted from 15 to 18 but then, once I could get it, I just kept finding reasons not to. Now that I'm turning 21, there's another design that I've been wanting much much more that I don't think I'll regret.
@JoshManMate6 жыл бұрын
That's called maturing mate but i think it's all about placement, if you had gotten the first design on your arms you might regret them, had you gotten it somewhere subtle and out of sight it would most likely be a personal memento of a past point in time. Too many teens these days are rushing to get their necks, hands, arms & faces tattoo'd when they wouldn't be willing to have the same design somewhere subtle and hidden. Just means they don't really want the tattoo for themselves, they want a statement piece, something to show off if you will. Of course there is the exclusion that they may have something very personal to them that they would be proud to show. I think you'll be fine, you come across as a rational & responsible person that has respect for yourself & your body.

3:01 - So if a customer comes in with a drawing, that tattoo artist will question where the drawing is from? Even if the customer jacked the drawing from the Internet, it’s going on his skin. Does the tattoo artist get blamed for stealing? What if the customer doesn’t want the artist to put his “spin” on the drawing.
@mr.c11366 жыл бұрын
I think he means he will not copy a picture of a tattoo that someone already has, not necessarily any photo. For example if the tattoo-ee drew their own tattoo, I think they’d be down. If you wanted a picture your kid drew tattooed, that too would be ok, just not an exact copy of someone else’s tattoo.

@@smoovejl Hah. That's funny cause I get a vibe that you don't know about something like "stealing". If you force a tattoo artist to tattoo something that's already on someone's body or in someone's art PORTFOLIO, It's called STEALING. You can have an art piece similiar or inspired by that piece, but none self-respectful artist will steal for your little salty ass. You're basically angry at someone for not stealing for you. My advice: Think at least twice before opening your mouth.

I don't understand why some artists don't want to copy a tattoo. I get you wanna have your own style and be original but at the same time this art is going to be on someone elses body forever..
@whirlingdervish3 жыл бұрын
I think it comes down to the fact that the artist, who created the original piece of art, worked for hours to give their client a unique piece of work, only for another artist to take that and replicate it to a tee. Personally I don’t think there’s anything wrong with using it as a reference, but for the sake of integrity and originality you should aim to create a unique tattoo for yourself.
@ggfoxer53823 жыл бұрын
@@whirlingdervish I completely agree. Especially if it's something you're going to have on your body forever, you should put thought and creativity into it. But some of the artists make it sound like a sin. I can understand disagreeing with it, but I guess I don't agree with totally refusing your service to someone for that reason.

Can we get a video for the Do's and Don't's for artists? like... Follow your own list of rules Show up on time Have your design ready and don't make me sit in the waiting area while you START sketching out an idea for the first time Don't reschedule on the day of the appointment especially if it's a weekday where the client most likely had to request time off from their work If you break any of the above and your client no longer wants to work with you due to your lack of professionalism, then you owe them their deposit back because of your lack of respect for everyone's time. Your time isn't any more valuable than theirs. Don't have YOUR friends over to hang, distract you, and slow you down. I'm in a lot of pain and really don't want to doddle while you chill with your homies Don't copy something you found on Google. I've legit found my exact tattoo on Google searches before. Don't catch attitude about a request for touch ups. Someone can follow after care to the letter and sometimes the ink doesn't take for whatever reason. If you charge for the day...TATTOO for the day. That's 8 hours. Not 5...not 6 ...EIGHT. Lunch breaks aren't included. If a workday for you is something different from the rest of America then clearly define that before collecting a deposit.

I have a fermata, a musical symbol that means to hold a note out, tattooed above my heart to represent how music changed my life and helped me out of a depressive state. It looks like a crescent moon arching up over a dot. The artist before knowing what it meant wanted to remove the moon and just make it a dot. In music notation, a dot let's the musician know to play a short note and it ends a lot of songs. A dot also looks like a period which of course ends a sentence. That isn't the meaning I wanted so I explained what the two different symbols mean in music to her, she understood and agreed to do the original design. Sometimes you can't change designs, mainly symbols, because it changes the meaning of it. Now I also have the Viking rune for strength on my shoulder. You can't really change it. The only way you can change it is standard look or stone tablet look. If anyone is wanting to see the two tats, I'll link a photo to them in the replies.

Great video! I agree with pretty much everything he suggested. The one thing I disagree to a point with is the part where he said the tattoo artist should make it theirs for a design...overall I would say no and yes. No because if they get the chance to ink you they should give you what you want. That said if you want the EXACT same tattoo then the artist should charge you more for getting what you want. I would only recommend this if the tattoo was a one and done piece, no more after. If the idea is a jumping off point and there is a collaboration, then that would be an ideal outcome. If you want to continue working with the same artist I would strongly recommend that you explain which piece you want and how that is going to interact with other work down the line. That way the artist can understand where you are coming from and perhaps what they were suggesting might not fit the overall theme. It could also enhance it. My left arm is sleeved with both traditional and neo-traditional pieces. I have one artist that did more than half of it. I explained what I was going for and he made suggestions that were spot on. The result is I love my sleeve. Now...years ago there was a artist who I talked to and told him what I was thinking of getting. He ran with it and within 30 seconds I knew he wasn't going to get any business from me. I recommend getting to know your artist and collaborate with them so that you both are happy with the end result. Most importantly...remember to tip well...it will hurt less!😉👍

is tipping really a thing when getting a tattoo? not sure where the tipping culture ends in North America...
@diluteduk6 жыл бұрын
sensemille it's not, you're already paying them a high amount for their time, skill, and service. but I think this guy is trying to change that
@29rbs6 жыл бұрын
It is definitely "a thing". It's not compulsory, like at a restaurant, but tipping is pretty normal when you hire anybody for skilled work and they do a good job.

I know tattoos can be expensive, but I view it as a service. Just like food service, or even massages, it's customary to leave a tip. That said, it's definitely not a requirement. All depends on how you feel about the art and artist. Do you 🤷♀️

I tip because I respect the time and work it took to get to where they’re at and they gave me a beautiful piece of art that will stay with me for the rest of my life. It’s just showing appreciation.

if I'm spending $100-600 on a tattoo what's the point of me throwing in an extra $10. That's like tipping your mechanic, you're already paying for their labor lol

My suggestion for people getting their first tattoo, think super super carefully and always listen to the artist since you know they do it for a living

Absolute tattoo noob here btw. Why on earth would you tip the tattoo artist? Aren't you already paying them for what they do? I don't tip the grocery store... What am I missing here? Thanks for the answers in advance :)
@ragnarokz11276 жыл бұрын
RinRin it's a little different to being a grocery store worker you are creating a piece of art that you can take to the grave how many other services can guarantee that? Also when you work in a studio under someone else the take a proportion of the clients money it doesn't all go straight to the artist doing it.

Any skill that takes years to master deserves a tip. If you’d tip your haircutter, you should definitely tip your tattoo artist.
@rinrin64546 жыл бұрын
Admittedly I shouldn't have compared it to a grocery store XD, but I guess I could compare it to an actual piece of art. You don't tip an artist after you just bought his painting/sculpture? Maybe it's a difference in cultures or maybe I'm just ignorant, but I don't think it's common to tip tattoo artists where I come from. A price is set for your piece, you pay for it and you're done. That makes sense to me. But still, think you for the answers.
@ragnarokz11276 жыл бұрын
RinRin yeah tipping is different in other culture like America tipping is like mandatory. But where I'm from it's more of a kind gesture if they've done the job well.
@xkhan6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think culture is definitely apart of it. However I gave my tattoo artist a tip because she custom made a piece from photos I gave her and I loved it so much that I wanted to give her more. If it was something simple like a heart, I wouldn't have tipped.
@pumpumcheezy6 жыл бұрын
For those of you who choose to tip. How much is a proper amount? Usually with food servers or massage therapists, you can tip that 15%(an average amount). But there's no way when the tattoo costs $500 plus

What do people feel about anime tattoos? I want a tattoo from an anime called one piece with the letters ASCE with the s crossed out. It symbolizes my love for my brothers as the character who had that had a deep bond with his brothers to the very end when he passed and idk that character stuck with me lot. Thoughts?
@classyburrito24206 жыл бұрын
Go for it man. It seems to have some real value for you. I'm a huge anime fan so I may be slightly biased haha

As someone who also loves anime, I'd say I definitely understand when a show has impact like that. Honestly people definitely have a stigma around anime so that's something to consider, but most people wont even know what the tattoo means in every day life since it's just the letters, and the people who do know what it means probably are fans too! If you feel like it's a tat you would continue to like, I'd say go for it since it's got good meaning to you and it's not such a blatant anime tattoo that strangers who hate anime would even recognize it

You don’t know how many classmates tell me how I should treat my tattoo (got it last November) after my tattoo healed. Like it’s what my artist told me how to treat it and it worked fine. They don’t even have tats and are telling me what to do. It’s a little annoying
