Thanks for posting this awesome video! It would be super helpful if you could include in the description the needle info (what size mag?) and the speed of your machine. I know there’s more than one way from point A to point B, but it would be great to have a general starting point. If I’m using your results as a reference, I have no way to know where I might have gone wrong. Thanks again for putting all this info out there!

This might make more sense in my head than in text, but, how do you know if your whip shading is “deep enough” into the skin to stick. Meaning the part of the whip where it’s lightest (the little dots). Isn’t whip shading putting the mag into the skin and whipping it then out of the skin? Will the ink in the very end of the whipping motion stick into the skin? To me it seems like the very end, as the mag is coming out of the skin, wouldn’t be deep enough to stay? Might be a totally dumb question lol 😆

Hey Brandon, first off thanks for making these in depths videos and being so approachable with questions as many in the industry aren't so kind. Anyway I have a couple questions that may or may not have simple answers. First is can I premix my own greywash in large amounts and save it for future sessions? Of course I would use distilled water and new sterile medical grade bottles, but is there a time frame in which I can use the wash? Also what do you think about witch hazel in your wash? I've also heard green soap but that seems a little risky. Thanks again brotha much love from los Angeles ✊💯

im a hobbiest whos only done lemons and fruit and now ive done 4 skins. one of the skins is a demon head oni with color in american traditional and im concerned about color aaplication and shading to fake skins as what if i did the black last then it was wiped into say yello0w or white making it discolored so im considering going dark to light but do you have any tips or videos on doing color shading and application to fake skin?

Súper helpful dude! Big thank you. An issue i run into is that the mag marks look to obvious. Is there a way to have a smoother wash or is this simply an aesthetic choice that differs from one artist to another? Thanks again!

I still have a hard time understanding artificial light source placement with shading traditional. How do you decide where to place the shading with each different traditional design? Where would the light source be to create the shadow? And how come I see different tattoo artists placing shading sometimes with traditional in areas that don't make sense, as far as a light source is concerned?
@jfretter82862 жыл бұрын
Same thing for me also I tend to want to over shade a piece hard to know where a subjective "line" is.
@stephaniegarfield291422 жыл бұрын
look at tons of western traditional flash and copy it. it’s not about realism, it’s about impact. shade to emphasize and block off shapes. try not to overdo the shading, keep things consistent, and simple. don’t worry about what looks realistic.

You just want the outline printed or drawn and use stencil paper and use a pen to trace it, or buy a stencil printer for perfect lines. Always make a copy of the line work before shading/coloring

Hey! I know I’m 4 months late on this so I won’t be upset if you don’t get to this comment however I’ve been learning how to tattoo for over two weeks now and my biggest problem with traditional shading is having an even flow even when I do the cross hatch. I think the reason might be that I tend to focus on areas that don’t need any attention so I over saturate them. Would love to know what you have to say. Thankyou !
@Tattooing1012 жыл бұрын
I recommend focusing on practicing in rectangular boxes it’s hard to learn of designs after you get the feeling for the whip method then try on a design also make sure you are using standard needles not bugpin.

Try applying a thin layer of vaseline on the surface of the fake skins. This will help your needles to glide across and not snag the skin
@brian12912 жыл бұрын
Another quick tip people. Shading is an ART and TECHNIQUE. Like I was told a few years back, "if you can do it on paper, it'll be even harder on skin". Cross hatching works wonders (style dependant of course).

my biggest trouble i got is that sometimes, i dont know why, but even what "wash" i use, NOTHING gets into the skin, regardless of how hard i stretch, it's sort of wiard thing that happen 1/100 clients, or sometimes just insanely red and no pigments.
