Taurine is an essential amino acid for babies. Adults can make their own taurine, but there are high amounts of it in meat and fish. Taurine has many functions in the body including working as a neurotransmitter in the brain.
In this video, Fiona Chin and Emily Cahill explore the various aspects of Taurine definition, the mechanism of action of taurine in kidney disease, and also explain how it can improve kidney function and protect against kidney damage.
Firstly, Emily discusses the connection between taurine and diabetes, highlighting how taurine can improve insulin sensitivity, reduce inflammation, and lower oxidative stress in individuals with diabetes and kidney disease.
Moving on they talk about the potential consequences of low taurine levels, including impaired kidney function and a higher risk of developing kidney disease. She then covers the causes of taurine deficiency, such as a poor diet, chronic illness, or medication use.
In addition, Emily discusses natural sources of taurine such as seafood, meat, and dairy products, and its potential drug interactions. She also mentions its use in alleviating hot flushes
Overall, Emily Cahill provides a valuable overview of taurine's potential benefits for individuals with kidney disease. It's a must-watch for anyone looking to optimize their kidney health and improve their quality of life.

Magnesium and Zinc can compete with each other for absorption in the body. When taken together in high doses, they may interfere with each other's absorption. It is generally recommended to space out the intake of these minerals if taking them as supplements to ensure optimal absorption by the body.

Had a urinary test done to check all neurotransmitters which showed very high taurine levels and I only took 1,000 mg a day in the morning (but not for 3 days prior to test along with other foods that needed to be eliminated before freezing the urine for send off) because I felt like it kept my heart in rhythm. After the test I cut it out totally and now several months later my heart is jumping all over the place, my blood pressure is up😮 and so is my blood sugar, so contrary to the results of the test I am going back on a capsule of 1000 mg of taurine per day after listening to your podcast 😊 Do you know if a.m. urine is an accurate way to test your taurine levels and how they interact with your other neurotransmitters?
@KidneyCoach
@KidneyCoach 11 ай бұрын
That is a great question. Urine will show what your body is expelling from its system, so it may not be 100% accurate as to the actual levels IN your body, but rather the pathways that are mobilising and using it. You could either be expelling taurine faster and more than your body needs resulting in a taurine deficiency. I think the best way would be to test blood and plasma levels of taurine. There is a test for that but I am not sure if it can be done via insurance and you may need your GP to write a special test out to have it done. That way you would know your actual levels in the blood / plasma VS how your body is expelling it.pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2403070/

Taurine can lower blood pressure, yes. It is one to monitor closely. That been said I have low BP naturally and take taurine and it hasnt made mine go lower. It seems to work more if blood pressure ie elevated via the sympathetic nervous system feedback loop with the kidneys to lower BP.

It's good to see that other recognize these unique healthy things, I thought I was the only one(others trolling or telling myths that it's bull urine 😂 instead of researching its importance for our body). It's an amazing very healthy molecule, a supplement everyone should use, it's very cheap aswell! My mothers bloodpressure stabilazed when she started to supplement it, and she doesn't need her bloodpressure meds anymore and her bloodpressure is normal. It even works against anxiety, depression etc. It makes caffienated drinks(Teas, coffee etc) a lot more tolarable without jitters. Been using it for many years (with breaks now and then) and I feel that it really helps me staying healthy and helps my mental issues and stress. It protects a lot in our organism and the liver aswell. Protip; do not obtain it from evergydrinks since they(99%) are bad for your health and the sugarfree even worse. I buy 500g pure taurine for 15-20 USD, it lasts like a year and it tastes like nothing. Put it in yerba mate or black/green = healthy evergydrink.

I watched the author of the June Taurine paper and he said people with CKD had high Taurine levels because the Taurine in their system (from food) was not being extracted. I interpreted this to mean that those with CKD should not take Taurine supplements - Am I wrong?
@KidneyCoach
@KidneyCoach 10 ай бұрын
Taurine is well indicated for kidney disease unless they are end stage - so stages 5. Then you need to check levels first before supplementation. It is a bit like magnesium and some of the other nutrients that the kidneys fail to clear but only in end stage renal failure. AND I would 100% avoid drinking things that have taurine fortified in them if you have any stages of renal disease, as these are usually in energy drinks and they are very bad for kidney function due to all the other ingredients in them, not just the taurine. So your question is specific to end stage renal failure only. :-)

Since Taurine is originally created by the body, does that mean when supplementing, our body becomes lazy in producing it and supplementation becomes necessary?
@KidneyCoach
@KidneyCoach 9 ай бұрын
Not exactly. The body just regulates how much, so it you take in excessive amounts it wont produce as much, if you reduce intake it starts making it again. The problem can be some SNPs and genetics can mean we produce less taurine, or certain health conditions and diseases require more of it, which is where supplementing it can really help.
