Actually, guys, here is what happened: HALL and OATES wrote the song , and recorded and released it FIRST, in 1973 on Atlantic Records. But, the song FLOPPED. It got no higher than # 60 on the Billboard Hot 100, and then died. Then, the following year, (1974) , The TAVARES BROTHERS, recorded the song. It was the first true HIT version, charting higher than Hall and Oates' original on the Pop Chart, and , more importantly, went all the way up to #1 on the Billboard R&B Chart. This is the reason why THEIR version was the FIRST version many people heard. In the wake of the success of the TAVARES version,in 1976, Atlantic Records, decided to re- release the H&O version, but by this time Daryl and John had left the label for RCA Records. THIS time, their original version became a HIT, reaching the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 Pop Chart. It was also re-released because , by the time that H&O left Atlantic for RCA, once there, they had their first million-seller with SARA SMILE, and Atlantic decided to capitalize on their success by re-releasing "SHE'S GONE". Now...THAT is what happened, which brings things down to THIS QUESTION: "Which version do I like BETTER ?" BOTH are GOOD... but I gotta go with The TAVARES BROTHERS, on THIS one, because their vocal harmony gives their version a FULLER sound that the H & O version lacks .

Thanks for the story behind this song. I actually got on this from Time Life Sweet Soul of the 70s bonus CD but I agree, I think Tavares version is better which is very unusual since copies rarely are better than the original. And Luther Vandross is the only person who really either made a better version or really close to the original as far as remakes.

BEST cover of Hall & Oates' "She's Gone" !! (This was popular when I was in High School! LONG time ago! Remembering fighting off dinosaurs on the way to school in the mornings! )
No! In Wikipedia I found this: "She's Gone" is a song written and originally performed by pop music duo Daryl Hall and John Oates. It was included on their 1973 album, Abandoned Luncheonette.

So glad I have on a music channel on tv right now. Came to this song to add it to my list. Love it. What wonderful memories of that time. Helps shut out the present. Not making good memories now. This reminds me of a boyfriend....things we did together....places we went to. BEFORE I jumped into marriage...and with the wrong guy. That ended fast. yay. Time to enjoy the songs...again. This video was uploaded in 2009. If @samhilam1 is still around and still has the original video, if the original is a much higher resolution with a high resolution, it would be great if he could reupload the video at 1080p instead of at this video's 144p.. That is why the video is so blurry and distorted.

Elisabeth 1903. I believe he was recovering from surgery at the time or he took time off because his Son Was murder in Florida.
@verahall64982 жыл бұрын
The actual lead singer on Check It Out isn't really Chubby Tavares, the one whose son Jason was killed, the actual lead on that song is Victor Tavares, he left the group to go solo on after the album was completed, Chubby started singing the song after Victor left the group, it was Chubby's son Jason who was shot and killed in Florida, if you pull up Check it out here on KZbin, ask for the version where Victor is on stage with the group and you will see him singing it, it's posted twice, one where he is wearing a black shirt and the other one is when he is wearing a White shirt, but yeah Chubby took over the lead on Check it out when Victor Tavares left the group
