I don’t know why no one’s mentioned that Mercedes has Warrantied this part ! Warranty replacement for the SBC for 25 years… It’s not a monetary problem they’ll even pay for a third-party mechanic if you bring the paperwork. So yeah you can use a cheap Chinese resetting device, or you could just call the dealer and have them put a brand new unit in on them! I bet they flush and replace the brake fluid when they do it.

Just to be sure, do a pump pressure test. I reset mine over 30k km ago, pump is fine, but did pump test after I did reset, and then again after 20k km. What actually can fail are the graphite brushes inside de Bosch electric motors. The brushes are 5 by 5 by 10 mm, and I bought a set of 4 brushes on Ebay for $4. I may be off, the lenght is definitely 10mm, but maybe with is 4mm, alltho I'm pretty sure they are 5mm. If you want, I can look it up on my Ebay order history, MB forums have almost no info about pump internals. Keep up! I just wish you didn't mess with the transmission, car is good enough as it is. But I'm really curious how you going to reduce weight, since most of weight is structural, as you know cabrios are heavy for that reason. Even if you do away with folding top, and all the hydraulics, it may save 100kg only. Greetings from Estonia, Comrade! :)

Dangerous. The counter is to pre-empt a failure. Merc did extend the counter and in many cases replaced the pump under warranty but the counter is a key safety device. Reason being, there is no way to detect an imminent failure. It doesn't make a noise or get steadily worse over time, It will just fail. Bypassing is fine but bear in mind, when the pump does fail, and it will, you suddenly have almost NO brakes. Happened to a friend recently, described it as terrifying. Came close to burying it in a wall to avoid pedestrians. Much better idea is to have the pump refurbished which is quite cheap to do. Failure is normally nothing more than bushes on the motor so easy to replace.
@tavarish

I didn't bypass, I extended it.
@marktadros8782
@marktadros8782 7 жыл бұрын
FFS, did you read his comment? Julian is speaking out of experience here, your breaks will fail when the bushes on the motor fail. He had this happen to someone he knows... Maybe you should get the entire pump replaced/refurbished with new parts? Or as Julian suggested bypass the pump entirely for safety reasons. I know car makers like Benz and BMW rip people off with parts and service, however, I really think you have it wrong on this one.

I understand how brushed motors work, and I do intend on overhauling the entire brake system, including the pump. However, I do know that a Mercedes dealer fix was to extend the limit of the pump operation, which is exactly what I did here.

it looks like you can pull the motor housing and check the brushes and the commutator bars to get an idea of how much life is left in the motor.
@jules19671
@jules19671 7 жыл бұрын
If you intend to overhaul the system then that's fine but for the amount you quote from the dealer, that's a new SBC pump, not a counter reset. Early models had a low counter value so extending it was fine. Later models maybe not. Mercedes replaced the pump on my 5 year old 80,000 mile E270. So if they paid out to do this under warranty there must have been a reason. Point is, many people would think they could do this as a full fix and may do it on systems that have already been extended as far as MB recommend so I think it's important to stress this is a short term temporary fix and not a permanent solution.

There is a reason the SBC system has an "expiration date"... It's a complete brake by wire system and it is a safety issue to do this and not replace the pump. If you do this; sell the vehicle and someone gets into an accident because of a braking issue you will be sued and they will win! Doing this for your own personal vehicle would possibly be okay but if you do this to a vehicle that is being sold and the "SBC count" being reset or adjusted without replacing the pump being fully disclosed you are opening yourself to a wrongful death lawsuit that will be won. There is a very good reason why there is an SBC count limit on that system!

StaticImage With all modern car is like with laser cartridge chip that is set of to print only, let say, 1500 papers, so even if you fill it with brand new quality ink it will not print any more, you will have red light telling you you mas change it, this chip is sometimes in cartridge or even in printer it's self, so what people do is they virginize it, it is the same here and in lot of others modules like SRS, and others... He just went down from 100% to 75% used module, nothing more nothing less... Problem is that all those manufactureres does not explain that to us ordinary consumers, or they are "caring" for our safety... Who does believe in that lol

This device doesn't "fix" anything. It just inhibits the warning message that the SBC hydropneumatic unit is nearing the end of its expected service life. By the same logic, do you reset the "Service A due" (or Service B, C, etc) message when it appears in the instrument cluster without changing the engine oil?

The problem is that Mercedes have spent millions of dollars testing and developing the car. From what you have said the DTC basically logs when the ABS pump has run for a number of cycles. Some one during testing will have found that the pumps efficiency may be reduced after X number of cycles. Therefore it needs replacing, as they can no longer guarantee that it will work perfectly when needed in that life or death situation. At the end of the day it is a component that will wear out. The reason the dealer will not offer the $20 fix is that they have to stand by their fix. If the ABS failed and there was an accident the customer would be straight around to the dealer demanding the world with their lawyer in tow. We also do not know what else the box has done. Has it reset the counter? If so what to. Or has it stopped the ABS system from advising you of any faults? I would be careful saying that mechanically your brakes are fine, you do not know that. You have not inspected the mechanical integrity of your ABS pump or valve block. What you do know is that external of your ABS module "hydraulically" your brakes are fine. There is a world of difference. As a end note. I do not and have never worked for a Mercedes Benz dealership or the manufacturer. I have worked in several dealerships and now work for a Vehicle manufacturer as an engineer.

Basically the issue what pump had was times brake pedal was pressed. So when limit is reached it gives warning. You can reset counter like Freddy did. Only thing you should check on the electronic motor that spins SBC pump and especially it's carbon brushes. When motor spins carbon brushes deliver power to it and they wear. Eventually those carbon brushes wear out and then that motor does not spin at all. In SBC case you'll lose all but emergency brake that is mechanical!!!

Hi tavarish from germany. I don't want to discuss ablout the safety of your doing. Everbody has to make his own dicision. But in one thing you are wrong. The percentage means tousands of Kilometers (add until next warning). For your example: You pressed 25%, that means the next warinig will appear in 25000 km (approximately 15534 miles). Watch at the milescounter in your dashbord, the SBC-brakewarning will appear (come back) at 135592 miles. Remember to tell the next owner of your car about your "brake-modification" - it would only be fair.

This is crazy. The reason it needs to be replaced is so that it is replaced before it fails. Brakes are not something you want to fail while you are driving down the road. I have driven these cars with failed sbc systems and the pedal gets very hard and it is very difficult to slow down. This is very unsafe. Making a video of you bypassing safety equipment could get you in some trouble if the brakes fail and you cause an accident. I hope you don't kill someone. Rigging up a brake system is an incredibly reckless way to save money.

I have a 2003 SL500 with about 60,000 miles/100,000 km. Many parts are available discounted on e-bay and there are KZbin repair videos galore. My impression is that these cars need to be used or else the hydraulic suspension o-rings stick, tear and gum things up - such as the valve blocks. The ABC fluid and filter need to be changed according to the manufacturer's specs (or more often). Don't boot it when the wheel is turned or you might end up in the weeds. Measure you fuel consumption in "smiles per mile" and remember "If at first you succeed, try to hide your astonishment."

Should it be important if Tavarish is bang on about the module's motor brush replacement or should it be cool that atleast he makes this video with whatever knowledge he acquires and chooses to share. But I agree about one thing though. The Brushed Motor thingum to replace should have been commonly known for him to share it in the first place. Appreciate the fact that comments show us this stuff. Is there a followup video on the changing of brushes on the motor for the said brake module. It's best to change it and prevent catastrophic failure.

SOS is for road side assistant and it's analog system and tide to cars phone system pre 2005 made Mercedes's. There's a way to get rid of that warning or upgrade system to newer digital , expensive.

David, he should do a pump pressure test, and he should look at the 4 brushes inside the Bosch motor inside the SBC unit. Chances are, brushes are worn, but can be replaced for about $4 for 4 graphite brushes., most of the work is removing the pump, because there is no room to access the this motor otherwise. But yeah, this here is not a fix, he has no idea about true condition of the braking system.

The brushes are just one fail point on it. Theres a bladder in the accumulator that fails and the seals in the valves will fail from moisture/corrosion over time if you dont flush it. Thats why mercedes benz requires it every 3 yeara

So, what happens when the SBC system stops working and the Sl becomes a 4500lbs torpedo? Can you hit the reset button?

It'll still throw the code if the brakes actually need work. Just resets the timing counter.

Hi mate! Great video and good job with the car! :D That SOS thing is not a big deal - it's a service MB offer for free in the first few years of ownership and then I guess it's a subscription thereafter. Its so your car can call for help if it's in an accident and you can use the SOS button. MB should be able to arrange your subscription if you want. I believe it's tied to the VIN of the car. Great job again!

This SBC pump can fail and you lose 90% of your brakes. The 10% remaining is for the front brakes and no power brakes. It happened to me and thank God it was at a stop sign where I lost all brakes. Is scary and I am surprised there are no deaths reported. Another fix Mercedes did for this modules was to add a metal bracket and add some cable ties. Is different than your problem, but just be alert of this well known problem

My car is an 05SL500. It happed the day I bought it last week. I found a pump on Craigslist for $150 and a shop charged me $200 to install. I also have the $25 ebay module you got and it worked on my W211 E500 a couple of years ago.

Yes, I'm aware of what happens if the pump goes. But that will always be a concern. It's a part of living with the SBC system.

Just putting this out there. Mercedes Benz extended the SBC warranty to 25 years. So the pump and all the electronic parts in relation to this are FULLY covered under warranty in the US at least. ( I had my SBC pump replaced) under this

What you did is effectively reset the counter for SBC and removed the fault code C249F "OPERATION TIME OF COMPONENT A7/3 IS EXCEEDED ". You still have the same old SBC unit and it could still fail in the future but now you will only get the warning when it has really failed. Of course a new SBC unit will be much more expensive than resetting a fault code.
