As a former MB Tech, we don't try to justify the price of an A service, we actually justify it by following the relevant maintenance sheet provided by Mercedes specific to your vehicle year and model based on your mileage. Quick tip: next time change the filter before draining the oil as the filter housing will hold up to 0.5 QT of oil as @Everyday Fleet Tech said in the comments below, if not you will create problems, this vehicles are very sensitive. Good video, but you left a few steps out. The oil cap was still on when the filter was taken out which causes the filter housing to retain a lot of oil that isn't drained. You should also change the filter first so that old oil drains into the oil pan and out of the car. The way you did it there was still about one quart of old oil left in the car. You also need to run the car before measuring the oil level as the filter housing needs to be filled.

Hey, great video. I just love these older Benz's. I was an apprentice with Mercedes when this model was launched. A little tip/advice though.......You should remove the filter or at least unscrew the filter unit before dropping the oil. The filter housing holds around 500ml/ 1/2quart of oil in it. Likewise, when you refil you need to start the engine to refil the filter housing before measuring the level. This is why you only needed 8quarts instead of the 9 it should get.👍

This is the routine I follow when changing the oil in my family's cars (MB, BMW, Mini, Lexus, Toyota, and Honda). Open the oil fill cap, take out the oil drain bolt, let it drain for 5-10 mins, crack open the oil filter (if you loosen it up too early oil will spill all over your engine and your driveway), let it drain for 30 mins while I grab a beer and smoke a cig. Then replace the oil filter, screw back the oil drain bolt, fill the correct amount of oil, idle the engine for a few minutes and recheck the oil level. So damn simple.

The recommended Mobil 1 0W40 is a very very good oil. I can't recommend it enough. I've studied mechanical engineering (specialized in automotive technology) here in Germany and we've done a lot of test series with different engine oils. Some findings where so bad that the manufacturer sued the faculty to remove the data from public access and said we must've tested counterfeit products (which was not the case) In the case of Mobil 1 it's not just that they bought their way in with the car makers and the customer gets recommended a subpar product because of that. A good example of that scenario would be some Castrol products. That particular MOTUL you have is also a very good oil. I do all the work on our cars myself at a good friends car repair shop and he has 60litre barrels and only uses MOTUL products. I put this oil in my dads car since it was brand new. He drives a lot so I have to change every 2 months which equals around 12k km. That car has 700.000km and never had any issue with the engine. It even has the first turbocharger. MOTUL has some incredible ester based oils which are worth mentioning as well. What I can not recommend is 5W30 of any sort in combination with ridiculous 30-40.000km intervals. It's not the engineers that recommended these intervals it's more the management side. Like hey competitor ABC has a xy km interval, how much can we stretch it without it causing problems during warrantytime. It's a good selling point if you can say the car only needs half or a third of the services compared to a competitor and that's the only reason for the high intervals. I've seen countless problems with this combination. These engines get completely dirty and sludged inside causing a lot of problems...any experienced mechanic can attest to that...

Your instrument cluster should go into an alternate menu screen it is at this point u turn your key to the accessory switch on position but don’t start the car, as you’ll see on this alternate menu you will see the vin number of your car the engine and chassis of your car as well as how many quarts exactly r in your engine as of the moment you pulled it up, that’s what I use and it is very accurate I must say, another way to explain this look up dyno mode for e class CLK class amg And it will explain how to get to the menu as welll. A topsider oil pump is a great DYI method for changing the oil. Since the oil filter is on top there is no reason to go under the car. "Yes." Top siders get 'all' of the oil out. I have used this method for 10 years on a BMW Z3 and for 3 years on a MB SL550. Zero oil related problems on either car. I've been told that this is the way most MB dealers do it.

I work at a local Mercedes repair shop, we're half of what the dealer charges for just about most things. We use direct aftermarket parts. Like the oil filters for most Mercedes are Mann Filters, we use those. Mercedes use the same ones, but with their logos on them. And we also use Motul oil, don't have an issue out of their brand, it works fantastic. And for an "A" Service, we charge $80. "B" Service, we charge $290. I'm 19 years old and I love my job and Mercedes. They're fun cars, but trust me, they can definitely be expensive. We do use direct OE parts from Mercedes on some jobs though. Depends on what the job is.

Reality check: Actual cost from DEALER: $132.22 TOTAL (Labor .4hrs= $58.40 , MB Filter $16.50, 9 quarts of MB oil (Mobil1) @ 5.99ea = $53.91, Seals, $3.41) Not having oil spilled all over the tops of your underbelly pans in your carpeted engine compartment and having dirty oil because you didn't remove the filter first or read the service manual, and incorrect levels because you didn't check AFTER the engine was run, priceless? Well, maybe not, but because I pay almost as much for Mobil1 and a fleece filter from the local auto parts store, it's really sixty bucks going to the dealer- and since I'd have to jack the car, wait around for it to drain, possibly strip one of the plugs, and take the used oil to be disposed of, it ain't really that bad. Plus, I can sit around in the dealer's lounge for half an hour and gorge myself on their free bagels and coffee.

With 9 qts, I could do an oil change for about $35, including the filter. I use Walmart Supertech "full" synthetic. Good enough. I have a 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis with about 100,000 miles more than your Mercedes. I use Ford Motorcraft filters (because they are the only ones you can get a socket for, and you cannot get a strap wrench on the filter in the stock location) and 6 qts. of Walmart Supertech 10w30 "full" synthetic. (Yes it calls for 5w20, but it has 250,000 miles of wear, meaning looser clearances, so the heavier oil works better) I have owned this car since 47,000 miles, I change the oil every 3,000 miles, and I expect to get well over 300,000 miles out of the engine. An oil change costs me $25, and takes about 15 minutes to do. Firestone wanted $77. That's enough for THREE oil changes. When the engine/transmission/other expensive parts wear out, I may just replace them, since they don't make large, comfortable, RWD, body on frame, V8 powered, solid rear axle cars like this anymore.

I don’t see the problem if someone wants to do their own servicing. I am very particular with my vehicles. Personally, I do my own services with an inspection, but I do buy the filters from the dealer for my records. My Porsche, Benz and Tacoma all have oe filters. I change out my own driveline oils, brakes, filters etc and write everything in my log book that each car has in the glove box. Once every two years I take the Porsche and the Benz in for an inspection just for peace of mind. Not once have they found anything broken or worn out because I’ve already tended to it if there was. I’m am constantly impressed with how well the German cars are built for the most part and the prices on parts aren’t nearly as bad as they’re made out to be. Also, for the record the Camry I just replaced cost me 4x as much as the Cayman to keep on the road. Price out a set of 4 struts and top hats from the dealership and tell me a Toyota is cheap. Granted it had a lot more miles but that doesn’t mean it won’t need to be maintained and will magically last forever. Now, full disclosure I am/was a mechanic for a few years in the the lighter duty side but I’ve now switched to heavy duty and work on multi million dollar cranes everyday. I still don’t think regular maintenance is out of the realm of possibilities for the average joe. Just be smart, do your research and follow a shop manual if you need, they’re available on the internet. If you’re the type who relies on the dealership to do everything for you, maybe a German car isn’t for you. But for the rest of us, there are some real bargains out there and you can get ALOT of car for the money.

If you did the oil change per the manual you would not even be under the car. You use a vacuum evaluator and ‘suck’ it out through the oil dip stick. Remove the oil filter when evacuating and continue till no more oil comes through the hose. Actually removes more oil than draining through the drain plug. That’s why when you buy the filter ‘kit’, it doesn’t include the drain plug seal washer.

My rule of thumb is: if you want it and can afford it, buy it and enjoy it. Not everyone is living paycheck to paycheck. Some of us prefer to drive solid, well built, well weighted cars than be surrounded by cheap plastic interiors that rattle and creak after 3000 miles. My E-Class has 40,000 miles and has not one rattle or creak. And no structural issues. My doors are heavy. I pay more for maintenance. But the trade off is a great solid, quiet ride.

I don't know how it is in America but in Germany part of the A service is a break test on a test bench, they also clean the water diverter, check all the light (external and internal), update the GPS map, ... and a lot of small things that you can do by yourself. But, if done correctly, it takes time and therefore cost money. And seeing the poor job you did, you'd better let a qualified mechanic do it for you...
@kbatzler6 жыл бұрын
I work for a Mercedes-Benz dealership in the US. You're correct...there is a lot more to a service A than was mentioned here. Many items are checked that are normally overlooked by third party shops. We are required to check and record on the service invoice: tire pressures (including spare if one is included), tread depth, brake pad thickness, check for oil leaks, brake fluid condition, shock absorber conditions, check all light bulbs, top off washer fluid tank, perform any available software updates including maps. Car is test driven to ensure all is functioning, washed then brought back up front to the customer. We do this for $250. Not necessarily cheap, but thorough.
@Billy123bobzzz6 жыл бұрын
@@kbatzler My local Toyota dealer does all that, including the wash and they bring the car around to me and open the door for me as I get in then they wave me goodbye. They do this even though I buy their coupon special which gives me a third service for free (if I pay for them three at a time). (They also check my tires, set the tire pressure, check for any recalls and in my hybrid they test my auxiliary battery, all for their reasonable oil change price.) All that costs a fraction of the Mercedes price, even when I factor in the cost of the extra oil capacity my the Mercedes (I'm a former Mercedes owner and my family had owned Mercedes going back to the 1960s, we now all own Toyotas, seriously.)
@mickeytiger6 жыл бұрын

The service performed in Germany is absolutely no different from the US. The intervals are the same and a service A, B, C, or D is exactly the same thing. As for the map updates, you just need to keep your eye on occasional mailers or email with promotions for free map updates that generally last three months. If your car is less than 3 years old the map updates are free anyways. I know how we perform our services at our dealership, your experience may vary depending on one nearby you. No guarantee it's going to be the same just like with any brand.

@cubano13897 жыл бұрын
It would not work correctly on this engine because of the dual sump setup, I still lift them and crack the oil pan drain screw I like to get everything out, the sucking technique works best when doing quick lube type express services at the dealer where we promise the service done under an hour and we still lift the car up to inspect it or else they yell at us lol, also I like to look under anyway because you would not believe how much shit people run over on the road and they think they came for an oil change but sometimes have to leave the car because they hit some shit that damaged their suspension on one side and their tires are wearing out all fucked up.

One reason some people pay to have their service done at a dealership is because their dealership offers a lifetime powertrain warranty as long as the service was performed at the dealership every 12 months or 10K miles. It's about $350 per visit and I think it's well worth it if you plan on keeping the car past 60K miles. Another reason people get service done at a dealership is that most dealerships will come and get your car at home or work and leave you a loaner while they service your car. $350 is less than one day's pay for many Mercedes owners so they don't mind paying $350 per year. The techs will also remove the filter before draining the oil because they actually know what they are doing.
